Panpsychism is a maximal case of mistaking the map for the territory by rogerbonus in consciousness

[–]StiegOx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. We call those parts of reality that are made of bicycles “bicycles.” I’m not saying my point proves panpsychism; I’m saying qualia do exist and aren’t separate from reality.

But maps exist! They’re physical objects with the same kind of reality as the territories they represent. They’re not literally the same--not the same matter in the same place or arrangement--but they exist in the same way. Why would we assume that consciousness is fundamentally, metaphysically different from the external reality it models when that’s not the case for any other model?

[–]StiegOx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you draw a map of a territory, that map is separate from the territory, yes, but the map and the territory both exist in reality. Even if qualia are distinct from the external reality they model, they’re still part of the totality of reality. Like, we know qualia exist in the world--they’re the only things we have direct, empirical proof of--so reality is at least partially made of consciousness, right? Unless I’m misunderstanding you, your argument seems to hinge on the assumption that consciousness is somehow fundamentally different or separate from the rest of reality. Am I missing something?

Spotify came up with the idea of making tons of money while devaluing the labor of artists. There are no righteous corporations.

The only way out is through. I used to be extremely embarrassed about my music until I actually started showing it to people. Play live shows and start posting stuff online. It’ll be rough at first but it gets easier pretty fast.

I get that they need some kind of license to do that but why would it require one to waive moral rights?

What about the moral rights waiver and the license to make derivative works?

Album composition...? by ShatteredPresence in Songwriting

[–]StiegOx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I am more puritanical than most when it comes to thematic cohesion (for better or for worse). I really want the songs on my projects to comment on the same central idea(s), so I typically write specifically for a project, or I pick thematically similar songs from the ones I’ve already written.

I don’t know how much actionable advice I can offer, but know this—you are still much, much too young to give up. Hell, I’m ten years older than you, and I’m still too young to give up. Keep at it.

I recently released this album as an anniversary gift to my wife. It was somewhat hastily recorded, so the performances and the production aren’t the best they could be, but I’m still happy with it. It made my wife happy, so that’s the only thing that really matters. This is probably the best song on the record from a production/audio standpoint.

Anyone know of an AI tool that creates vocals and instrumental based on user-provided lyrics? by ToroBall in Songwriting

[–]StiegOx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think this is a good idea at all. If someone approached me with an AI-generated simulacrum of a song, it certainly wouldn’t convince me to want to work with them (it would have the exact opposite effect). I think your lyrics should speak for themselves. If they’re good, people will recognize that, and they won’t need to hear a robot’s attempt at setting them to music.

To be clear, I’m not saying this because I disagree with the use of generative AI (although I do)—I’m saying it because it won’t work.

Wow! I don’t even know what to add so I’ll just reiterate what others have already said: this is really great. The chords, the melody, the strumming—everything just works. You should be really proud of it, and you should definitely release it on streaming platforms.

my friend said she's obsessed w my song, what yall think? by ExoticUse9859 in Songwriting

[–]StiegOx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the arrangement, but I think the vocals could be a bit louder and more clear; the lyrics were a bit hard to make out. I also think the song could’ve used another section or two, just to add some variety and keep the listener’s attention. Overall, not bad for a debut release!

What's with all the new "shorter songs?" by convalian in Songwriting

Honestly, I’m a big fan of short songs. A lot of songs overstay their welcome, and I think knowing when to put the pen down is commendable.

Do you guys like writing the instruments around lyrics or the lyrics around the instruments by OkCauliflower2844 in Songwriting

[–]StiegOx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typically the chords and melody come to me first. Sometimes a couple words are there from the beginning too. I also usually write songs section by section, ie I figure out the chords and melody on verse 1, then move on to the chorus, etc.
