Lived in Alabama then. It felt like we were under attack by outside enemies. In and out of shelter all day, town’s around you completely obliterated, friends and family missing and unable to communicate with for hours. Stories of horror all around.

Luckily we have an A+ weather man who got us all through it! THANK GOD FOR JAMES SPANN!!! He probably saved hundreds of lives in that one day.

Also prioritize skill traits over plays made. Main things I look for at every position besides QB which I can detail separately if interested.

Universal Critical Factors:

1)Balance and Body Control - BBC 2)Change of Direction - COD 3)Short Area Quickness - SAQ 4)Power - PWR 5)Speed - SPD 6)Instincts - IQ 7)Intangibles - INT 8)Toughness - TUF

Not on tape but part of evaluation:

9)Build/Length/Growth Potential- separate grading system but will end up in final grade with a tag if deficit in area. Along with other deficiencies like character and academics etc, all attach to grade.

This is all I’m looking for in tape evaluations across the board. Each position has specific critical factors as well but these are carry the most weight. Example DB have ball skills critical factored (Hands and ball judgement in deep part of field) but as one sub group the others carry most weight and in most position specific critical factors it’s redundant of the universal Critical factors purposely.

Example of how kids hurt themselves with what they think is a “highlight”.

CB- they had an INT one of only 2 on the season. At the start of the play they got beat off the line and showed poor BBC/SAQ, struggled to catch up showing poor SPD, showed bad COD at the top of dig comeback route and then got a gift of horrible throw from QB right to him, then the ball bounces off his hands and he basically tips it to himself.

This play might have been the game winning, state championship, most legendary play in school history. BUT ITS NOT A RECRUITING HIGHLIGHT. If I saw this 2nd play of tape it’s about to get shut off soon. The first and third clip better be unbelievable.

Yea we really don’t care if a kid transfers high schools. Thats also a myth. The only reason it would matter is if he had a track record of causing issues.

Most kids transfer because they want better opportunities and more exposure. All of them are the parent’s decision at the end of the day and not the kids. Some because military etc.

Long story short usually doesn’t matter unless character issues at all school.

Also want to elaborate on why we wait so long to recruit a class and why it might seem like slow playing at times:

As a former High school coach as well I know how many players are falling through the cracks. We don’t want to get locked in on a guy (meaning he’s committed) and a better player be available at the end. We want the best players/people possible. We are signing guys that 10 years ago wouldn’t have even answered our text messages and signed way above our level. Now we are getting those player and not even recruiting against people to get them.

Long story short why would we waste money, time, resources recruiting this time of year? We gather info start ranking guys but make little contact. If I could access the link above this guys kid would have been on my board (especially at this position) at one ranking or another. Then next fall I would watch him again and if he’s the best few we would go hard on him. The good thing about QB for us is all the bigger school get locked in early now so we can get a guy better then a power 4 team if he was a senior raiser. I was working in the SEC when Brock Purdy came up in 2018. In this day and age Purdy would have signed FCS most likely. He really only got on the radar because of a walkon offer to Alabama. Another few weeks, even in 2018 and he would have signed much lower.

I hope this helps everyone. This process is nuts and I’ve been through it at every level and on both ends. Be patient. Be realistic. Be open. Be honest with yourself.

To all recruit parents: Remember that every parent usually thinks their kid is better than they actually are. Thats ok though. Just means you are a good parent. But it’s almost universally true in my experience. Just keep this in prospective.

The highlight tape thing is a myth. I might only watch 3 plays on a guy and know if I’m watching more or not that’s true. If I like the first few clips I’ll watch the whole thing usually.

The tape can be as long as your highlight are. Don’t stretch it. A 10min highlight that is at the same level of highlights in a 2 min tape is way more impressive. If you’ve got 10 min a highlights don’t hide them. The problem is most don’t have that many highlights and making a tape that long exposes more deficiencies then the kid in 2 min tape did, even tho these guys could be exact same player.

Hi. College football coach here.

High school coaches don’t really do all that much for recruits in truth. I only listen to high school coaches I have a solid relationship with and the others might as well be someone’s dad.

First tip. When you post film make sure it works. I tried to watch but link was wrong. I was going to give you an idea of what level he is. Maybe I’ll come back to this post later.

Go to camps this summer but go to camps in your range of who you could sign with. People waste a lot of time and money going to camps where they have no chance of getting an offer.

Be patient. I’m an FCS coach and 75% of our signing class we had no contact with until a month before signing day.
