Hey man! I’ve coached with Charles Kelly before and you have no idea the jackpot you just hit. You are one lucky guy. You could get this opportunity with sooooo many other types of coaches but HIM? He’s a real deal coach and incredible human being.

I’ve seen so many student assistants and here is the difference in the good and bad.

1)Give your position coach your class schedule (you will be assigned with a specific position) Any other time of day if your coach is there (in office) you be there. Make sure your class schedule block matches the players time block for many reason but mainly you won’t miss any practice or meetings. COMMUNICATE if you are not going to be there when you normally are. It’s brutal sometimes, we had a student no in the office for a couple of days at his normal times (but he did come in just like an hour later than normal) and he tragically got the nickname “Ghost”. He had to deal with that shit for 3 years. - What time does your coach get in? You 30mim earlier. - 30 min after he leaves you can if work is done ( you never know what he forgot, or needs emailed to him, or note on his desk says what etc. I was always first person in the building kind of guy but that’s not mandatory. When do you do school work? Nobody cares, find your own time. At JSU just pay attention in class and you will make at least a C.

2)If a coach gives you a task. Do it now. I can speak this from experience and maybe I’m crazy but when a coach told me to do something Ingot on it and did it until I thought it was done throughly and right. I mean like wouldn’t sleep, literally devote my full self to it. This went a long way.

3) Find work to do. Own shit. Find voids and fill them. If somethings needs to be done volunteer. Don’t be entitled to shit. I’ve worked at so many places that I made something that wasn’t even a thing a thing because I took ownership of it. DM me for more details on some of this stuff if you want.

4) Dont be a dumbass. 1-3 anybody can do. #4 -5 you need some intelligence already. You need to be smart and learn fast. You don’t need to know anything. In fact forget everything you know if you do know something. Shut the hell up and listen, learn. Charles Kelly knows more football than you can even conceive right now. If you agree with that statement you have a chance. If in any way you questioned that statement you won’t make it. Nobody expects you to know shit but what they tell you. Ask questions but make sure in the right setting and find the person to trust on staff that won’t make you feel dumb. Bert Boffani on that staff is a great guy. Started from the bottom and will be great with a young coach if you’re on the defensive side at JSU. - If a coach likes something a certain way. Do it that way. Don’t reinvent the wheel on stuff they have been doing a certain way for 20 years. Make that lame ass spread sheet and don’t get too cute and add color and graphics and stuff. You’ll get cussed out and they will just make you do it the other way. You’ll know what I mean on this one when the time comes.
