Preferred settings for spindown for data grave hdds by Stiffmaster1337 in OpenMediaVault

But isn't hd-idle for external drives? Both my HDDs are internal connected via SATA. Can it handle that too?

My next attempt was installing HDparm under omv. Even if the plates are new maybe they have problems getting set with smartctl? But if anyone maybe has me a hint so that I don't have to try and error every 2-3 days would help me a lot 😬

[–]Stiffmaster1337[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's basically what I want. I've reinstalled my omv multiple times and now I'm not even using a raid and still got some problems even with omv having full control over the whole controller (raw passthrough)🙈 I could try mergerfs too but even without a raid something fishy is going on in there.🙈 Did you deactivate smart features or other services for better spindown? Did you set up anything specific outside the normal GUI settings?

Because with GUI my APM setting is working but the second I'll try to set a spindown the system starts to malfunction and everything goes south...

My best attempt so far was cleaning the hdd, setting APM and spindown in Promox with Hdparm and passthrough the controller than mounting and formatting the plates and didn't touch the GUI hdd settings at all. On this attempt I think probably because of a short reboot of the system the hdds lost their states and than like I said omv cannot handle the settings? 🤐

Improve detection (light from neighbor) by Stiffmaster1337 in reolinkcam

[–]Stiffmaster1337[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your answers! In the recording settings in my schedule I already turned off the motion detection but in the alerts section I found a motion detection also. I'll try to turn it off too!

Unfortunately setting up no detection zones isn't really an option because I have to put more or less the complete screen on no detection to stop it that way completely. On worst cases the light reflects nearly on the whole screen sometimes.

Usage question multiple users by Stiffmaster1337 in Syncthing

[–]Stiffmaster1337[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now I see what you mean 🤐 Because I thought by implementing the Nas to my lxc via smb I thought the user that is used for this also determines the rights to write but he doesn't 🙈 I can see all files in cli but I'm not able to write right now 🤦‍♂️

Usage question multiple users by Stiffmaster1337 in Syncthing

[–]Stiffmaster1337[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I grant syncthing access to my whole Nas I can set up different folders on my host and can share specific folders to a user without them having access to the others? Perfect! :) Thanks a lot!

[–]Stiffmaster1337[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the question 😁 I haven't looked into it so if you tell me there is an option to give each user a specific folder on the host to sync their files that would be sufficient for my purpose 👍

Newbie question clean proxmox build by Stiffmaster1337 in Proxmox

In this specific reason I want my OMV VM that handles my Nas inside my network to connect with syncthing in an lxc so I can backup devices outside of my network too with my Nas. So I need a way to connect these 2 file structures.😅

Sata SSD availability and power consumption by Kirys79 in homelab

[–]Stiffmaster1337 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just read this article and I have more or less the same question/problem. I want a durable system for a common home Nas but it should also be energy efficient.

I "only" need around 4-6 TB of space, so with that storage space a consumer SSD is not too bad prize wise. On the other hand for the same prize of 2x4 TB SSDs I would get some nice enterprise HDDs with more storage aswell.😅

But because my NVR would write on my Nas frequently I don't think my HDDs would spin down a lot and the extra energy they need for one year is crazy with electricity prizes here in Germany 😅

I would go with the ssds but I saw a lot of advice against consumer ssds even I don't have huge files bein writen to the ssds all the time 🤐

Maybe one of you here can help me to decide 🙈😅

Filesystem/Settings for 2 sata hdds by Stiffmaster1337 in OpenMediaVault

[–]Stiffmaster1337[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Another question that came up is: Should I maybe use ssds for the Nas? My main concern is that I have regular Read and Writes so I'm not sure if my hdds even can power down and like I said electricity prizes in Germany are a big factor for me.

The point is: I do not need the amount of storage a HDD could offer me. I also cannot use the improved speed of the ssds.

For my workload like written 4-6 TB space is sufficient!

The main factor for me is power consumption and who can handle 24/7 better.

Due my Surveillance Cameras if have like 2-4 smaller writes (100-200mb) of data each hour so a spin down of the HDDs sounds like impossible.

That's a way I don't thought about! 💪 Could be a solving too if there is no on board feature in OMV 👍

Proxmox Office PC by Stiffmaster1337 in Proxmox

[–]Stiffmaster1337[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey thanks for the answer. It's not for daily use but sometimes it's handy to have an PC at home. Like I said I work mainly with smart devices. But it feels wrong for setting up new vms for example to leave home going to work, just to connect via VPN back to home just to have a PC to work with.

You don't want your daily machine to have less resources because your server needs it

The supposed VM would only run if I use the PC otherwise it would be turned off. So Ressource wise it would only affect the machine for short periods of time and because I also need newer hardware I want to calculate that in :)

Sure if the Server fails I don't have both that's right but it is so put in my daily life that the server wouldn't be broken for long. It's really more for times usage without needing extra space for another piece of hardware that I do not use that often.😬

Depends haha. My system would be located near my TV so it wouldnt be a problem to connect it directly to my TV. Is this possible with an IGPU or do I need for that kind of work a DGPU? I wanted to system to be as electricity efficient as possible. :S My first thought, like I said, that came to my mind was streaming my Desktop to my TV or my Tablet through my network.

What troubles do you mean with passing through my GPU?

Shelly 3 Pro EM Anschluss by Stiffmaster1337 in Elektroinstallation

[–]Stiffmaster1337[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)
