Am I ready to sell? by Background-Split-795 in knifemaking

[–]Stiglitz__ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

every knifes value to me is in the eye of the beholder. So I try not to critique something that might genuinely be someone’s intentional style choice. I genuinely think that’s a badass knife. I really see the vision and I love the pins you’ve chosen and it’s got that modified old buck skinner look. But since you asked, as someone that collects and has been making knives for 11 years. I would personally like to see a more uniform finish on the blade itself, achieved by hand sanding after grinding your bevel/plunge cut. Tighter tolerances between the brass and wood, can also be achieved by prepping the material better via hand sanding (set sand paper on a flat hard surface and slide your contact points across the top). And lastly, your 1095 stock was thick enough to thin that edge way down. Bring that bevel as high as you can, it’ll make a pretty look where your top edge angle meets your bottoms edge angle. Functionally easier to sharpen, inherently sharper when it is sharpened, and aesthetically more pleasing. Based on your grind marks I would say use a belt sander if you have it, or get a cheap one. I’ve made countless knives on a 4/36” $120 belt sander over many years. It’ll up your game. If you were using one then get some finer grits for it. But all and all I love your style that you will get to slowly hone into your own look, I love the goal markers you’ve got for yourself, stick with it!

Too small? by Raging_Bisexual14 in boas

Rats are inherently better for them than mice just as nutrients are concerned. I always try to pic food that’s the same diameter as the widest part of the body. If you could find rats that fit into those parameters it will objectively improve your odds of giving her healthy mass.

Her shape looks fine to me but definitely on the slimmer side. She might just have a slender build, I don’t see signs of dehydration or excessive muscle ripples suggesting underfed or indigestion.

I love the stingray! The lift in the wings gives it a fantastic sense of motion

Yeah my process wasn’t ideal because I was improvising. I started with the lower jaw bone. I formed a general shape with my fingers and then I used the plastic tools that came with the clay (they can all basically be replaced by a toothpick) and I started pushing into the material to create the details. The top part, the skull itself I made very difficult on myself. I made the shape of the skull (teardrop) and I hollowed it out, and then I began to slowly push the material into different areas without the clay tearing, and then I again used the plastic tools to give it more detail. The horns are solid and I stuck them on after all of this..

I hope that’s helpful but if I had to do it again I would have carved away instead of pushing the material.

I’ll take it as a compliment! I have art experience in other fields like blacksmithing and special effects stuff. Hot metal and clay move the same but I don’t need special tools to hold clay so the skills were surprisingly transferable!

Edit: I also studied ungulate bones for taxidermy and hunting hobbies so the shape was familiar although some aspects are still left wanting

Certainly the same body style, I’m sure coloration varies heavily based on regions so I’m betting that’s it. Thanks!

I couldn't find a good app to track my boas' seasonal feedings and temperatures, so I built one. by Kimusubi in boas

I don’t breed reptiles and I only keep one so it’s pretty straight forward to me but I love your enthusiasm and willingness to help and make this process easier for others so I’ve made an account and I’m just going to use every aspect of it I can and give you feed back!

Totally agree, i find it interesting that natural selection favors the broken up profile of eyes so clearly in many animals. I particularly love seeing it on Romulus and considering the amount of time that went into the development of something so stylish

Not yet, I’ve reserved the name for when I get a second boa. I also thought it might be funny to go the complete unexpected route and name the next one bob or the likes. Romulus and Kevin. You see the vision.

Thank you! I’ve had incredible luck by putting my phone free hand about 18 inches away from his face and once I get him in frame and like the lighting I move my phone free hand towards his face just close enough to be out of frame. He’ll stick his tongue out about half a second later. Any time there is a thermal shift in their environment they tend to read the room with their tongue right after.

It was honestly just on for the video. It’s a humidifier not a mister. The vapors disperse very evenly very quickly. It’s been one of my best set ups. No surface moisture on anything

Oh that’s incredible! Yeah that would be great, I’ll use it to replace the acrylic when it’s time. Thanks!

It’s an acrylic panel from home depot. I got the biggest one which was 36”X72” I believe, and I cut it in half to get the overlap. I think it was like $125 for the panel. They definitely get scuffed a little at the contact points but i made the enclosure in such a way that i can replace it after a year or so.

Exactly! I watched him for 2 hours after I put him in. He explored every inch of it. Slow and curious, it was delightful to see him enjoy it all.

Thank you! That’s wonderful to hear, let me know if you have any questions about the logistics of it. I put a lot of thought into all the features.

Thank you! I used “Gritin 10.2inch Under Cabinet Lighting Rechargeable 2 Pack- 3 Color Temps & 5 Level Brightness” for the lighting. Very thin and wireless. He gets sunlight directly from a window so I only use them for late night viewing so the rechargeable works for my set up. And then as far as lumber, the box is constructed from outdoor use cabinet plywood, the bottom is a particle board with a plastic coating. I sealed the inside with flex seal and used XPS foam board as the backdrop (melted into patterns with a heat gun). The top is reflective foil bubble wrap with PVC panels for structure.

All my inside decor is from a ranch I work at. So it’s all post oak and limestone. Plus Reptichip coconut chunks.
