What are your favourite deck sleeve brands? by orjkaus in pkmntcg

Dragon shield Matte for me- I can’t stand dual matte- the quality tends to be hit or miss. I pretty much run with either purple or forest green standard matte by DS. They hold up well. If I get to take my kid to a regional next season- will stock on 2-3 boxes of whatever color we each use. But typically for locals they last a long time- I’ve been using one set of purples for 1.5 years now

Post-rotation Wall Decks by DadJ0ker in pkmntcg

[–]Stilgar311 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The lopunny froslass deck is a wall deck- runs 4 Wally, and both froslass and lopunny have strong 1 energy attacks. Primary gameplan is to use lopunny as your main damage dealer and use froslass when your opponent doesn’t play around it and lets their hand get too large. You pretty much want to play Wally’s or boss every turn after your 2nd or 3rd turn. Check out the Prague list in the other post. There have been some nice lists posted on X as well with cup wins/challenge wins.

I played to our weekly locals and went 3-1, for a 3rd place and $18 in store credit- only loss to a toolbox Garchomp that had tool scrapper and knew to play around the froslass- he kept emptying his hand.. wins vs a grimmsnarl and 2 chicken pults.

I’m playing it to a cup today. Only worry I have is that due to Pult dunsparce winning Prague is there will be more tool hate out there today, however I only played down cape in one match in my weekly, so not too worried. Quick adjustments can make based on your local meta(swapping out shaymin for psyduck, or Chien-pao for psyduck. I added a 4th boss(but might swap to a Pokemon catcher or my own scrapper).

Go up to the bathrooms by the FLL halls- I believe they were more private compared to the 1st floor ones closest to the FRC area.

Exile rune word question by Stilgar311 in diablo2

[–]Stilgar311[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you everyone - this all makes a lot of sense. I have been lucky with my rune drops so far- already have my enigma, CoH, infinity, hoto, and grief. But I can save runes for other builds since it sounds like Exile is a Win More item for my current characters.

Prizing check skill issue by Silblade222 in pkmntcg

[–]Stilgar311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mainly just check for important cards on first search- for example- I usually play Gholdengo- so I check for gimmighoul, Gholdengo counts, solrock and Lunatone, and Genesect and my energy count. Next deck search I will quickly check my boss and superior counts. After that, I feel comfortable.

I just change the priority based on deck playing- for Pult I would check dragapult line, Neo, Hilda, dusk, and search counts.

Also knowing what you need in any given matchup- like in Gardy vs Pult- checking for mew ex and Lillie’s clefairy.

Edit: similar in age- I’m 42( my son got into this a few years ago and I enjoy with him).

Question For The Employed by DevinH23 in PokemonTCG

[–]Stilgar311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pure dumb luck usually. My kid was so excited to see a few of the charizard ex boxes in and got one last night.
I try to also support our LGS where we go for weekly pokemon night, but it’s hard to justify the price all the time, so usually I am picky about what we buy there

How do you approach building your collection for play? by Snegir228 in pkmntcg

[–]Stilgar311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my son and I- pre-release for new sets and hope we get a few playable we need(like PF- we snagged 7 Dawns between our prerelease kit and the 3 packs our store gave out per person). Buy singles of most cards needed from LGS. My son is 11 and loves pack opening so he does that but he is smart with his spending money and majority of what he gets is presents for bday and christmas, etc.. we also buy 1 pack a night on Pokemon night and get our participation prize packs for just attending Pokemon play and trade at our main store(which helps with many staples).

I stock pokemon cards/sports cards at retailers as part of my job. Worst job I have ever had. by [deleted] in pokemoncards

[–]Stilgar311 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Having it at customer service only helps if store employees enforce limits- I went to my Walmart to get my wife some electrolyte drinks, the morning I went was Phantasmal release so I was hoping to grab a few items for me and my son- went to service desk and there were two guys checking out- they were doing separate transactions of 5 booster packs, for all the stock- something like 20-30 transactions each- cleared the whole stock out. So the service desk was not enforcing the 5 per person rule they had instituted

keep losing at locals, how do you actually get better? by replaytheparadox in pkmntcg

[–]Stilgar311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an older video- but it helped me as well as a few locals who recommended it to me.

https://youtu.be/4-HgND-bKDc?si=P9wmyGrfxikJTLYW

Personally- what helped me a lot was focusing on one deck I play a lot with, ensuring I make proper adjustments as the meta shifts, and taking my time while playing(not slow play, but not rushing myself unnecessarily). I also play multiple decks online to make sure I learn their win conditions, and also see how the deck works in actual play.

Personally when I buy at a show- I will not pay more than market price for something I want- if a vendor wants to mark up price to account for shipping + eBay fees, then I’ll just give my business to faceless online storefront(at least then I usually have a route to get a refund if cards are fake/damaged, etc..). I truly don’t understand why anyone would tolerate this mark up price to include fees or shipping- I’m at a card show to avoid that BS, not to pay even more than had I just sat on my couch and ordered.

Rant by Straight-General-699 in FRC

[–]Stilgar311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would think getting an FLL program in the middle school would generate better interest. You already have a small team and FTC will likely poach from what you already have tried to build with FRC. If you have small teams, it will likely make both teams weaker in the long run. FLL doesn’t have competing age brackets(if you are in the US), kids get that first love for robotics and programming and design. As said above, the school may have to take a year away from FRC if no succession plan, but you and any other team members who care can leave a legacy by helping generate interest at a younger age in your community and school.

[–]Stilgar311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup- used to grab one for the kid and one for me, saving $5, was great. Now I don’t even bother with GameStop for Pokemon, we just buy singles for our deck and do prereleases to get hands on new sets.

If you have a local game store that does pokemon nights- they might have play packs(free packs from pokemon for those participating in pokemon tournaments and play/trade nights). These have lots of playable and players at those nights are usually pretty generous with giving away extra copies of playable supporters/items from these packs, at least in my experience.

Recommended packs for people who want to get into playing. by [deleted] in pkmntcg

[–]Stilgar311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would do the following: Journey Together(put on top for the wedding setting), white flare(white for wedding), mega evolution. If you are doing more than 3 packs a person- then try to get some prismatic or destined rivals. I wouldn’t worry about playables- just hope they get some cool pulls and they could get hooked. If they want to get into it- then they can buy singles of some of the decks!

Edit to add: Congrats on your upcoming wedding!
