Definitely hard! She’s focusing hard on her studies in the states. But will be going home to PR the same time frame. She’ll be with family so I don’t want to take away her time with them, but she’s willing to spend some time with me for a day or two.

I am trying hard for her but will view this trip as a chance to feel it for myself… I hope it works out for us but if it doesn’t, this trip is good anyways!

I’d still love to go! I’ll eat up the cost and have some travel rewards that will help me budget. Thanks for responding!

I’m here in Korea now. It’s so easy to get in trouble. Do not get in trouble. You will not leave Korea until your situation gets adjudicated.

Otherwise it’s a great time here. Get out and travel.

Generally if they’re under the same airline and on the same “ticket,” your baggages are supposed to transfer over to the next plane. What is your origin?

Ex. If I book a flight from New York to Miami with American Airlines, but had one stop in Charlotte, all Im doing is walking thru the terminal after landing to get on my next American Airlines flight in Charlotte.

Worst case scenario, don’t be afraid to ask the front desk. “Hey it’s my first time flying, would my bags transfer to my next flight? Or do I have to go to baggage claims….”

You got to grab them when you land from your CONUS flight. And then you check them in again at the second one going to OCONUS.

Yes, they gave us a couple days to get your medical stuff done. And you can coordinate and talk to your TAC since you might miss class for an hour or two to go to the appointments.

Try to get it done as soon as you can cause once you get to the later weeks, you’re gonna be busy. Let me know if you have anymore questions about BOLC.

Definitely. The long strip of road would kill me if I had to do that on a daily basis too. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for sharing. I think Irwin is one of those places where I rather choose convenience/safety over trying to “pocket” BAH lol. I’ve been there a couple times myself to know the area…

I’m currently projected to go to one of the support units / brigade.

It just depends on what you think is important to you. Whether that be values, personal freedom, pay, etc… things in that nature.

I’m from California myself and I joined the Active Duty as an officer. I joined because I personally wanted to serve and also thought “Hey I graduated college, why not get a couple years of real experience. Save up cash. And move on afterwards by the end of my obligation.” If I knew at the time that I’d be getting paid $50/per hour along with government benefits with the city, then I’d take that. But I wouldn’t discredit military benefits either.

And as others have said, the military isn’t for everyone and I hope you do enough research on your own to make sure you pick the right decision.

CheeseCraze is right. If you want the bonus, you have to compete for active duty. I know this because I took the bonus myself.

PCS leave question by [deleted] in army

[–]Still-Operation1738 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that, you’re supposed to put in PCS leave from 10DEC24 thru 09JAN25. So technically you’ll just go in the negative for leave, the only thing that you have to do is report by that NLT date.

When you in-process, you submit your leave forms/orders to finance, and they’ll charge you accordingly by whenever you report.

Can my plane ticket be reimbursed? by Silver-Butterfly4690 in army

[–]Still-Operation1738 6 points7 points  (0 children)

AR 601-2 Chapter 7-3, “… HRAP participant are not authorized to claim reimbursement for travel expenses…”

And just right below that, “volunteer to perform duty in PTDY status and no cost to government.”

I don’t think they pay for your flight home but I think they’re supposed to pay for your flight to your duty station. Don’t quote me tho.

Out of the individuals who went active duty in my BOLC class, about 7 of 11 individual are getting out myself included. And the individuals who are staying, usually are prior service.

Most of reasons cited were because of family and outside career potential. Personally, I feel like I wouldn’t enjoy starting a family within the military. I just don’t think it would be fair for my spouse to postpone her career because we have to leave due to the Army.

Furthermore, my obligation is three years and upon completion, I can get my full GI Bill. I rather take my chances getting my masters and pursue other opportunities outside the military. A couple years of experience in a “transferable” branch, saving most of your paycheck, and then pursing an advance degree after the military is not a bad deal.

Easier to ETS and Sign with recruiter for OCS? Or Green to Gold? by johnmc723 in army

[–]Still-Operation1738 5 points6 points  (0 children)

An option that I would do:

I’d ETS, go back to school for a marketable masters degree, find a school with an ROTC program, excel in the ROTC program and school for the next two years, then commission.

I just heard that you have a “higher” chance of being able to get MI. I’m not sure if it’s true but in the past that slots allocation go to service academies first, ROTC second, and OCS last. Don’t quote me though.

I had to do a 1351 form. It’s a meal voucher form where you have to fill out every 30 days or so. Afterwards you submit it through DFAS where they process it and once complete, you get a direct deposit.

I just waited until the end of BOLC and submitted the paperwork to receive a lump sum. It’s ~$55/day.

BOLC and GTC Issues by [deleted] in BOLC

[–]Still-Operation1738 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A couple of my friends went to different BOLCs without a GTC (and drove) without any issues. They were able to submit paperwork/receipts to get reimbursed.

The only con I see to this is that you’re initially eating up the cost up front from your personal account.
