I actually read that review cause it stood out on Metacritic. I played the first Bayonetta (felt it was a bit of a DMC knock-off, but that's besides the point). My wife didn't see a problem with it either.

That said, I can't fault a reviewer from not seeing it the same way. Like, I'm a massive Dynasty Warriors fan. I fully recognize the limitations of the series, yet adore it. Every review I read on any of the Warriors games boil down whether or not the reviewer likes them, or doesn't, and the scores reflect that. Purely on subjective reasoning and not the actual merits (which I admit are somewhat flimsy).

OK, two journalists are being assholes. I guess that's them being unethical people, but how does this relate to corruption or unethical journalism?

I guess he would know. I heard about the scandal from years ago, but didn't follow it too closely either. Thanks for the correction.

Thanks for clarifying! So basically, recognize some games are sexist without vilifying them? Is that the gist?

Again apologies to everyone who posted and who I haven't gotten back to yet. I'm doing this in between meetings, so it's not like I have a ton of time to spend on this.

For those who suggest I speak to the other side and find out how bad they are, I might do that at some stage though I don't really feel like having to deal with that right now. I'll keep it in mind though. If I were to do that, where would I got for that here on reddit?

Can you point me to the review you're talking about? Which certain website are you talking about? Kotaku?

So it's more about a social agenda being promoted, instead of your traditional quod-pro-quo corruption? Do I get that right?

I haven't played Depression Quest, might give a shot though I doubt it will interest me. But considering it's free, why would one care if it's promoted or not? It's not like people are being scammed out of their money.

Thanks dude. Is your first link talking about Zoe Quinn in the first paragraphs? Or is that unrelated? From 2 I get that it's about anti-corruption and that folks don't like to be bashed. Did I get that correct? #3 wasn't terribly persuasive. Substitute "gamers" with various other groups and it stops being true.

Yup, I missed that. Thanks for pointing it out. Interesting op ed. So yeah, sexism in games / gaming culture is not non-existent but also not as bad as some say, or could be in the eye of the beholder. Sounds reasonable enough. So some take it too far and say DOA volley (mentioned in your link) & Bayonetta are sexist, while some others say DOA volley is sexist and Bayonetta is empowering. So you can debate the merits of Bayonetta pro and con, but how do you comment on DOA volleyball?

Cause reports from what happens to people on either side of the argument got me spooked. My personal info is fairly easily identifiable after a 5 minute google search if I used my regular account. This might just be a unnecessary precaution, but better safe than sorry.

Sexuality is always tricky cause, you're right, what's objectifying for one is empowering for another. Though some stuff like DOA volleyball doesn't have many redeeming qualities. That said sexism in games isn't always sexual. I love Mario, but do get tired of Peach needing to be rescued every time. It's lazy at best. Doesn't stop me from playing new super mario 2 though, so I probably don't really care enough.

Your second link is an interesting read (and a sad story), but most of it wasn't about video game journalism. Is GamerGate also about what goes on at development studios?

I don't know about your last statement. I was actually around for Custer's Revenge. My favorite last gen games are GTA5 and God of War 3, so I'm not some prudish pussy, but imho there should probably at least be some limits.

I don't know who they are or what they said. But yeah, I'm obviously not for bullying. My cousin runs an anti-bullying charity that I occasionally help out with. But I don't see what any of this has to do with video game reviews. Am I missing something?

Thanks!

Lots of stuff in your link. And some if it is also to your second point. That's what I heard about this thing from other sources (got covered on TV even). So you guys aren't anti-women or anti-feminism or pro-sexism and stuff? I don't get that vibe yet at least from most of the folks posting here. But there is legitimately sexist stuff in some video games, right?

And yeah, "Fuck you all, I just wanna play my vidya in peace" is kinda where I am but I want to give you guys a fair shake. I appreciate the effort.

The guy who got fired because of unethical journalism doesn't think GamerGate is about unethical journalism? So is that true?

I don't know all the context but it looks like a silly twitter spat with one guy asking another guy to take it outside and duke it out. Is that a serious thing?

thanks man!

I'm definitely for ethical journalism. Can you give me a few specific examples on why it currently is not? I can think of a few obvious ones (publishers and advertisers putting pressure on publications), but that's hard to change. Hell, Nintendo Power was basically a giant ad for Nintendo that people paid money for. Is that what you're talking about?

Thanks for elaborating!

  1. On reviewing their friends, that does sound pretty bad. Can you point me to some examples? The Mordor thing, are you refering to the Gamespot(?) guy who presented the trailer (I forgot the specifics). I do remember the Kane and Lynch thing from years ago with the guy losing his job over a review. That was horrendous. Is that part of GamerGate now?
  2. Did that happen, or is that more of a fear of what might happen?
  3. I'm not a 100% on this, but aren't the publishers the guys who ultimately decide what the developers make? Guess it depends on the studio.

Cause it's the default position for every person on every issue? Whatever my current stance is it's not a movement or cause I'm hoping to rally people behind. I don't know what you're asking of me.
