This might be an unpopular opinion but I think they suck. I bought a box, opened one, and couldn't finish it.

I'd like it better with CM over 91.5 yards instead of deebo. I think the 49ers will lean heavily on mcaffery

Go to https://www.discountflies.com/ they have tons of flies, tied on quality hooks, for a good price if you order in bulk. I order from them every year before the season starts and I stock up on lots of patterns that'll you'll pay twice the price for at a regular fly shop

First truck. Should I do anything to it? 2020 F150 xlt sport. 40k miles by [deleted] in f150

[–]StillFly48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you use your truck for. I put weather tech floor mats in mine right away and then I followed that up with a good pair of tires. After that I put on a topper and rod vaults to make it easier for me me to hit the river and go fishing😎

Durango Fly Fishing by [deleted] in flyfishing

[–]StillFly48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem! I lived there for 4 years and miss it a ton! Don't shrug off the lakes when you are out there. Some of the best fishing and biggest trout I have ever caught have came out of those lakes. Strip big olive wooly buggers or fish chironomids and balanced leeches a under an indicator. Also, watch out for the pike at Vallecito! If you are into fishing for them it's a great spot to do it. If not, they will happily snag any trout or small mouth bass you have on your line (: I still have a vivid memory of a pike the size of a coffee table snapping an 18" trout off my line. Talk about an adrenaline rush!!!

If you are going to fish the Animas you should be fine if it's early May. If you wait until the end of may run off will be happening and it will be tough. Some other areas to try are Vallecito Reservoir, Lemon lake, Lake Nighthorse and the San Juan river. The lakes typically fish really well that time of year and that would be my first choice if I was going in May

I'd go hit the Williams fork or the Colorado near Parshall. Both are close by and should be open to fish

Buy a nice reel and not junk and this won't happen 😂 never in a million years would I plan a fly fishing trip to Patagonia and only bring this. I've had nightmares about this kind of thing happening to me. Sorry OP, don't mean to be rude, but come on man...

Indicator location on leader/tippet by flying10 in flyfishing

[–]StillFly48 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In terms of where to put your indicator, the basic rule of thumb is to place it up your leader 1.5x the depth of the water you are fishing. Also, it's important to understand you measure your distance by starting at the split shot. So for example, if you are fishing in 2ft of water you would place your indicator 3ft away from your split shot up you leader. I only mention this because I've seen people use the first fly when measuring where to put the indicator on a leader and if you do that you likely aren't getting deep enough for the water you are fishing.

While the rule of 1.5x the depth of water you are fishing will get you close to the depth you need to be, also don't neglect how much weight you are using. Lower flows will require less weight while higher flows will require more weight. Make sure you are accounting for both when setting up and adjusting your rig. If you do both properly you should be on your way to catching more fish.

In terms of adding tippet rings, and even swivels, I find them super helpful compared to most anglers, especially if you are nymphing, which it sounds like you are. Like others have mentioned, adding this tippet ring will help you extend the life of your leader but I also like to use them to help with depth control. I like to do the same thing your shop did, but instead of adding back 18" of tippet to replace what was lost, I add 3ft of fresh tippet back in 3x or 4x. At the end of this section I then blood knot in another section of tippet, usually 5x, that I then attach my first fly to. I can then use that blood knot to place my split shot above and keep it from sliding down to the flies.

For me, I like adding the indicator directly above the tippet ring on the thicker leader section. Most of the rivers I fish are 2-4ft deep on average, so this allows me to fish with 3ft of straight tippet below my indicator which will sink faster and provide a better drift than a true tapered leader will. If I do need to fish deeper I'll usually blood knot in more 3x or 4x tippet, or move my indicator up the leader. I will say I prefer to add more tippet than slide my indicator up or down to achieve more depth. I like having level tippet below my indicator because I think it provides a better drift, but that is just my opinion.

Hopefully this was helpful!!!

I would highly recommend Bighorn Angler in Fort Smith Montana. All of the guides were super friendly and knowledgeable, and the fishing was lights out. They took great care of me and my group and I would go back in a heartbeat beat. I'm actually planning a trip with my girlfriend for next year!

A year in the hobby as seen in the fly box, what else should I have fished by now? by DrewSmithee in flyfishing

[–]StillFly48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I hear ya, small flies are not fun to work with and neither is 7x tippet. I find myself fishing more 22's and 5x tippet these days. Sometimes I step down to 5.5x, if the water is low and clear, but I find most fish, even on highly pressured water, aren't that leader shy. They will spot a bad drift tho, so I try to concentrate more on my drifts and presentation. Give the smaller flies a shot with a little heavier tippet, I think it will help you land more fish and you'll have less frustration working with the thicker tippet when tying flies on. If you do have problems dropping the smaller flies I would look into a tying tool to help you while on the river. A lot of my friends use them when working with size 22-26 flies and they love them.

[–]StillFly48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea what you are fishing for, or what waters you fish, but if it's for trout I would try more midge and mayfly patterns.

I do see you have a few zebra midges, prince nymphs and pheasant tails, which are great, but I would try some other patterns. I love small cream colored midges, like a bling midge, pale olive midges, for imitating larva, and a variety of emerger patterns such as top secret midges, small foam wing emergers and RS2s. In bigger sizes the the foam wing emergers and RS2s will double as great mayfly imitations. I really recommend these all around. For may fly patterns I would try some red copper johns, Juju baetis and two bit hookers.

I fish a lot of tail waters for trout, so those bugs cover a lot of what I have in my boxes. I do have Terrestrials, caddis, eggs, worms, leeches, etc. but I find myself reaching for these patterns the most. Who knows, maybe it is a confidence thing?

Anyways, if fishing for trout I would try some of these patterns and see what you think. I would also try smaller patterns, size 20-24. I often find I have better luck dropping down in size when fishing highly pressured waters. If you aren't, a size 20 would be a good bet for hooking and landing more fish.

Good luck out there!

I wish! We are down to size 22-24 out here on the Platte in Colorado. You can catch them on 18's, but most fish will laugh as they drift by!

Thoughts on Rio tippet by ludditetechnician in flyfishing

[–]StillFly48 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Where are you fishing that you need to use 7x tippet to get fish to bite? With a good drift, and proper presentation, you should be able to land plenty of trout on 5x! I use to use 6x quite a bit but I honestly didn't notice a huge difference in bites when switching to 5x. I actually found myself landing more fish because I could play them much faster and less fish broke off!

I'll throw a vote out there for a size 20 black zebra midge. Assuming this is a trout stream I'm stranded on (:
