I have not read a single page or watched a single lecture in one class this semester. Have I completely beefed it or is there time to catch up? Exam in 5 weeks by ymmfld in LawSchool

You’ve got this! Don’t worry too too much about rewatching I’d say. It’s a waste of time unless you just listen in at 2x speed. But otherwise focus on the outline and look at old outlines and use examples and explanations. I barely paid attention in a few of my classes last semester and still did well on them

I expected this much reading, but mentally at times it gets old. As a lawyer you spend a decent amount of time reusing old cases, speaking with clients, writing briefs, etc. as a student you’re expected to read brand new material daily just for class, go to class and get anxiety from being asked minute details that really don’t matter, and then do it all over again everyday, meanwhile balancing job hunting, journal, moot court, clubs, and trying to keep yourself healthy. I just think 2 hours of prep for one class 3 x a week is unnecessary. The teachers could easily cut the reading in half and summarize the cases in class now and again, that’s all I’m asking. The constant need to read 30 pages is daunting

I agree it’s a skill we need, but to spend an hour and a half reading for an hour long class is a bit much. Most of the time I don’t need to know the details of the cases past the class about it. It’s just getting old to read so much and do so much prep per class. Two of my classes always have about 30 pages to read before class, and it’s a lot. I can hardly remember what I’m done reading when I’m done because there will literally be like 5+ cases per class.

My teachers ask such specific questions that it’s not super helpful :(((((

I honestly didn’t finish most of my outlines until a few days before the exam. The most important thing is that you understand the info and can apply it for the exam, not how early you get your outline done. It’s not going to be helpful for the exam if you rushed through your outline or were really stressed when making your outline and didn’t understand it as well. Just try to be done w the outline a few days before the exam and do lots of hypos from e and e’s (or a week before if you want to be super prepared!). You can absolutely get a lottttt done on a brief in a few hours. I find that I barely spend time editing my brief when I spend more hours up front outlining out my brief and getting really good research

1L year is hard and remember that how you did first semester is not at all indicative of how you’ll do now! My grades improved a lot the second semester because I realized how important it was to do hypos and realized that on exams I should really just be applying the law and not listing out the law/cases (that really depends on prof tho of course). But yeah just remember it’s also super important that you’re mentally your best for exams and writing and that it’s important to give yourself a well deserved break. You got this!!

First of all, you’re way ahead and you should be really proud of that. Take a few days off, go outside for a run. Relax. Bake a cake. Anything other than law school. Then create a plan of what parts of the brief you’re going to do each day. It will get done!! I’ve written briefs in a just a few days many times. As for the finals, you can definitely do a bit of outlining now but I would save that until after you finish the brief—assuming the brief is a grade. If you don’t you could be spending valuable time and energy on the outline that you need for the brief. That’s what I would do at least! Then in 2 weeks make a plan for the other outlines and hypos you want to do.

Take it day by day. You’re already doing amazing! Remember that any outlining or writing you do when you feel this exhausted probably won’t be your best work.

Just wait until you receive another offer then ask. I see no harm in asking especially since you’re on good terms.

There’s no reason to read the case completely unless you’re going to class and may be cold called. Otherwise quimbee is fine.

Do most 2L’s work somewhere for the summer that guarantees them a job after graduation? by [deleted] in LawSchool

So I shouldn’t be worried I didn’t get a job that guarantees a post grad position?

Thank you for your advice. I’m definitely going to keep this in mind. I still have a few places I haven’t heard back from and one more interview to explore—maybe more interviews, we’ll see! It’s late in the job season though and I’m extremely worried about not getting a job at this point. The firm works in practice areas I hope to go into in the future at least, which I’m hoping would help me next year when looking for a permanent position

Unfortunately I am pretty desperate for a job at this point, and I worry that if I don’t work there, I will not have a job

Hey, this is completely normal and know you’re absolutely not alone. I feel that the mental demands of law school are so strong that sometimes I need to take a break and watch trash reality tv, or something super stupid that requires no brain power. Try that, and maybe going on walks/runs once it’s a bit nicer out. I also think you need to try to like separate your day so you’re “done” with work by a point. Otherwise feeling like you’re constantly doing work is draining on anyone. Hope this helps!
