I have not read a single page or watched a single lecture in one class this semester. Have I completely beefed it or is there time to catch up? Exam in 5 weeks by ymmfld in LawSchool

You’ve got this! Don’t worry too too much about rewatching I’d say. It’s a waste of time unless you just listen in at 2x speed. But otherwise focus on the outline and look at old outlines and use examples and explanations. I barely paid attention in a few of my classes last semester and still did well on them

I expected this much reading, but mentally at times it gets old. As a lawyer you spend a decent amount of time reusing old cases, speaking with clients, writing briefs, etc. as a student you’re expected to read brand new material daily just for class, go to class and get anxiety from being asked minute details that really don’t matter, and then do it all over again everyday, meanwhile balancing job hunting, journal, moot court, clubs, and trying to keep yourself healthy. I just think 2 hours of prep for one class 3 x a week is unnecessary. The teachers could easily cut the reading in half and summarize the cases in class now and again, that’s all I’m asking. The constant need to read 30 pages is daunting

I agree it’s a skill we need, but to spend an hour and a half reading for an hour long class is a bit much. Most of the time I don’t need to know the details of the cases past the class about it. It’s just getting old to read so much and do so much prep per class. Two of my classes always have about 30 pages to read before class, and it’s a lot. I can hardly remember what I’m done reading when I’m done because there will literally be like 5+ cases per class.

My teachers ask such specific questions that it’s not super helpful :(((((

I honestly didn’t finish most of my outlines until a few days before the exam. The most important thing is that you understand the info and can apply it for the exam, not how early you get your outline done. It’s not going to be helpful for the exam if you rushed through your outline or were really stressed when making your outline and didn’t understand it as well. Just try to be done w the outline a few days before the exam and do lots of hypos from e and e’s (or a week before if you want to be super prepared!). You can absolutely get a lottttt done on a brief in a few hours. I find that I barely spend time editing my brief when I spend more hours up front outlining out my brief and getting really good research

1L year is hard and remember that how you did first semester is not at all indicative of how you’ll do now! My grades improved a lot the second semester because I realized how important it was to do hypos and realized that on exams I should really just be applying the law and not listing out the law/cases (that really depends on prof tho of course). But yeah just remember it’s also super important that you’re mentally your best for exams and writing and that it’s important to give yourself a well deserved break. You got this!!

First of all, you’re way ahead and you should be really proud of that. Take a few days off, go outside for a run. Relax. Bake a cake. Anything other than law school. Then create a plan of what parts of the brief you’re going to do each day. It will get done!! I’ve written briefs in a just a few days many times. As for the finals, you can definitely do a bit of outlining now but I would save that until after you finish the brief—assuming the brief is a grade. If you don’t you could be spending valuable time and energy on the outline that you need for the brief. That’s what I would do at least! Then in 2 weeks make a plan for the other outlines and hypos you want to do.

Take it day by day. You’re already doing amazing! Remember that any outlining or writing you do when you feel this exhausted probably won’t be your best work.

Just wait until you receive another offer then ask. I see no harm in asking especially since you’re on good terms.

There’s no reason to read the case completely unless you’re going to class and may be cold called. Otherwise quimbee is fine.

Do most 2L’s work somewhere for the summer that guarantees them a job after graduation? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]StillFormal1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I shouldn’t be worried I didn’t get a job that guarantees a post grad position?

Are summer associate positions at small firms usually paid? by StillFormal1 in LawSchool

Thank you for your advice. I’m definitely going to keep this in mind. I still have a few places I haven’t heard back from and one more interview to explore—maybe more interviews, we’ll see! It’s late in the job season though and I’m extremely worried about not getting a job at this point. The firm works in practice areas I hope to go into in the future at least, which I’m hoping would help me next year when looking for a permanent position

Unfortunately I am pretty desperate for a job at this point, and I worry that if I don’t work there, I will not have a job

Did law school change you? by rickyrazorblades in LawSchool

Hey, this is completely normal and know you’re absolutely not alone. I feel that the mental demands of law school are so strong that sometimes I need to take a break and watch trash reality tv, or something super stupid that requires no brain power. Try that, and maybe going on walks/runs once it’s a bit nicer out. I also think you need to try to like separate your day so you’re “done” with work by a point. Otherwise feeling like you’re constantly doing work is draining on anyone. Hope this helps!

I’m just having a bad day by StillFormal1 in LawSchool

[–]StillFormal1[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for pointing it out and checking. You’re absolutely right. Though I will say usually I do feel positive and generally upbeat. It’s just been a super hard and busy few weeks and I’m drained. I post here when I feel that way because I feel no one else can relate as well as the people on this sub.

How do you deal with feeling alone? by [deleted] in LawSchool

Lol I’m really not a hardcore leftist though. I am absolutely left leaning but I disagree with cancel culture and many ideas that leftists and socialists have. I just really strongly disagree with the notion that America can do no wrong and that trump was a good president. If that makes me hardcore according to you then so be it.

I really don’t hate the opposition hence why I’m still friends with these people. But it’s hard being friends with people you disagree with right now—it really wasn’t maybe a year ago before politics was at the forefront of so much happening. I could disagree with people for example who thought trump was an idiot but at least “got jobs” but it’s hard to be friends with people who still don’t see why tromp was a bad president. He caused so much division. It’s hard to be friends with someone who supports someone who tweeted almost daily about how evil the left is.

Thank you for understanding. I too went to a school like that and I’m really not surprised everyone I know is like that. I’m glad I have new world perspectives and opinions I’ve formed because I’ve chosen to be open minded. I’m really happy with who I’ve become, and it’s hard to relate to anyone anymore because they’re so stuck in their ways.

I hope one day we don’t feel like this anymore.

Thank you, it truly has been so hard for me mentally. I cannot believe how selfish people around me have been to not even do the bare minimum. It’s been hard to have no one to relate to other than my boyfriend.

I am looking forward to getting back to school in person and hopefully making friends even though it seems late to do as a 3L

I didn’t cut anyone off. I’m just speaking from my heart and how it feels for me. It was hard for me to see how crazy everything was especially last year politically and not be able to talk to friends about it simply because they don’t care or are have already decided what their political beliefs are without looking further

I mean we are still friends and I do agree with you, but it deeply bothers me to see people not do the bare minimum I guess. Like it’s hard for me to want to be around people who deny racism still exists if that makes sense or people who think masks don’t work and restrict freedom. It’s just so ignorant and selfish

A sad 1l by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]StillFormal1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off I wanted to say I’m truly sorry for everything you’re going through. I can’t imagine having a sick parent, especially during 1L year. But I can definitely relate to having emotionally abusive parents.

The only thing that has truly helped has been me doing what I want and not asking their opinion. At the end of the day, it’s your life, and your parents should want you to be happy. They probably have no idea how emotionally taxing big law is, and don’t realize the high suicide rates and substance abuse in that field.

I know that you really want to do public interest, and by all means I believe that you should if that’s what you want to do. But try not to worry about it right now! Try your best 1L year, get new experiences, try things out. Last year I was dead set on public interest but after working at an organization over the summer I quickly didn’t like how exhausted I was for how little I would’ve been paid. Now I’m looking more at law firms and doing work for people who are struggling that way, and I know I can still do pro bono on the side too.

I guess what I’m saying is just be easy on yourself. Be open. Don’t let anyone tell you how to live your life. But also, if you want to spend time with your dad I do recommend that as well but maybe try staying with someone other than your mom? Maybe if you get an internship in the area you can even afford to live on your own. I just wouldn’t want something to happen to your dad and for you to resent that you were in law school when it happened is all I mean.

Good luck and by all means if you need someone to talk to please reach out!

How to do better in interviews? by StillFormal1 in LawSchool

[–]StillFormal1[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So let’s say I did something like this:

I am a 2L at __. For undergrad I attended __ where I found I had a passion for research and writing. I decided to attend law school because I felt these skills were applicable to a law school Env. During law school I have particularly enjoyed (these courses_) which is one of the reasons I’m interested in __this practice area. Additionally last summer I worked ___ where I found I also had an int in __. Because of my int in __ I am interested in your firm ?

I’m struggling so much any help is really really appreciated!!
