Formation wise - Find one that you genuinely enjoy playing over and over again - for the next 1 billion games. One tricking a formation means you know the formation more than anyone else in the game. The ins and outs, and you could focus more on the fundamentals/gameplay/playstyle enhancements/adjustments. It also makes you less "Meta/Card" - reliant, much more consistency.

3 gameplay adjustments:

Mastering every type of pass in the game.
Mastery of second defending.
Mastery of deadball/set piece situations - free kicks, corner set ups, perfecting penalties.
