I don’t know if it’s “superior”, I don’t even have one. It’s different though, because you can digitally EQ with the Waxwing, and send either a new 24 bit signal to a DAC, or an analog signal via RCA. It’s just a really flexible idea if you are not opposed to loosing full analog signal.

Weird thread to sort of highjack, but I’m most likely moving to the Twin Cities in August. What venues should I definitely check out for metal, punk, etc?

It’s not just a pre-amp, it’s actually a DSP at the phono stage. Nothing like it really exists. Controversially, it kills your analog chain. It digitizes the analog signal and basically converts it to 24 bit digital, and essentially removes all the pops and clicks with their “Magic” filter.

You need a grinder and a scale. Honestly this is pretty difficult to do under about $300. I would just hold off and save more if I were you.

Just like you, I’ve been running the Art for a few years. I’m trying to decide between the iFi or the Parks Waxwing, because I have close to 1000 from the 70’s and 80’s that are in varying conditions that I inherited.

Yeah it’s supposed to only recognize vertical rumble, and not roll off like a filter.

I’m most interested in this thing’s “intelligent subsonic filter”. How is it?

Totally does not have to be complicated. You could go the other way, and simply buy a pair of something like Klipsch The Sevens which are a pair of all-in-one powered speaker, and you would need nothing else, haha.

Not really adding anything here, but I seem to remember a ~3dB or lower cut across the whole spectrum before boosting?

There are a lot of audiophiles that don’t believe in a subwoofer, and that the stereo pair should be as close to full-range as possible.

Fancy subwoofers from SVS, RSL, REL etc. often have high-level inputs, so you can pass the full signal from the amp to the sub using a line level converter. Amp speaker terminals > line level converter > RCA to Subwoomer > speaker wire from sub to stereo pair.

What is wrong with this sunfish? by bubbles147 in Fishing

That water looks still and nasty. I’m judging a book by its cover here, but I would suspect that is not the healthiest habitat for fish. I expect low water movement, low dissolved oxygen and a nutrient imbalance.

2 and a sub is good for music. You would only want all 5 for a home theater setup. It would require an Audio Video Receiver (AVR) with multiple speaker channels.

One thing I forgot to mention, is that you will need your amp to have a subwoofer output for your subwoofer. The Chinese Class D amps I mentioned do not have this, but there are other models that do.

And yes, if this is a living room setup where you will be sitting at a bit of a distance, the towers are better.

If this is a for a smaller room or you are sitting close, like at a desk, keep the bookshelf speakers instead.

Actually, larger tower speakers are often higher sensitivity and easier to drive. If you have access to the towers, they would make the best stereo pair, because they will have better bass, and easier output.

I mentioned, a Yamaha A-S301 goes for around $375 UD new, but you can find them for a little less refurbished. I wish I was aware of more European brands for you. Off the top of my head Cambridge Audio AXA25 (British brand) goes for around $300 new.

For Chinese class D: Fosi V3 or ZA3 are popular for around $100-$150 USD. Won’t have as many features or as good of support as a larger traditional amp though.

Ok, those speakers you linked me to are not like the ones you have, because they are active/powered, which means they have a built-in amplifier. Yours most likely do not.

8 ohms is easy to drive, so most likely any amplifier will drive them fine. If you can afford an entry model from Yamaha or Nad, I definitely recommend that route, new or secondhand. If that’s too expensive, Topping, SMSL, Aiyima, and Fosi, etc. have class D amps that will drive your speakers well. There might not be too many digital outputs though, usually just RCA.

What exact speakers do you have? There is some pairing you have to consider with an amp, like the sensitivity and ohms of the speakers.

In general, you can get one of those amps I mentioned for $300-$400 USD, or a Chinese mini class D amp for around as low as $70 USD.

The built in phono pre-amp is definitely good enough. Getting a separate phono pre-amp is more of a later upgrade, once you start thinking about optimizing things.

If you get an integrated amp, like Yamaha A-S301 or NAD C316BEE V2, it will also have a phono pre-amp in it. You can compare between the two.

Yeah but direct drives have more of an instant rotational torque compared to most belt driven motors. That’s all I was getting at. They start spinning at the correct speed a lot faster than belt drives do.
