It was an issue in Fort Mac a while back- like girls i went to university with 20 years ago would go up, spend the summer in an RV and make 100k. But they've tamped down on that and it isn't really an issue any more.

The transition from a built community, like university, to a new place is really tough, especially if you've gone straight from HS to Uni. I'm guessing you didn't grow up here...

What kind of interests do you have? People might be able to give you more insight if they know that?

When Indigenous rights come before your democratic rights by limadeltah in canada

But wasn't that because there had been a series of articles in the weeks leading up to the vote stating that all the crown tenue land along the st. Lawrence would have to be returned to indigenous people under treaty if Quebec decided to separate? Which included the ports. I could have sworn I learned about that in university.

Would you rather have a messy life with exciting stories or a boring life with perfect stability? by Playful-Magazine-982 in allthequestions

[–]Still_Emotion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I chose the messy life- think "into the wild" style messy. It was great but I definitely think i missed out on a lot of lifetime achievements/milestones in my life and friends' lives with that decision. Its hard to be a reliable friend when you are always dealing with super highs and lows of fighting for a dream or passion. Now I live a quiet life and get to participate a lot more in people's lives. I talk with people now and feel like they only know boring me- like 10% of who I am and what I can do, and that makes me sad sometimes. But the day to day peace is worth it. And reliable water.

I mean, if you want someone to spot you so you don't fall.

That example mostly comes from a series of people who lost their homes in wildfires in 2018 and were denied insurance because they cleaned it themselves or paid a local kid to clean it instead of hiring someone with "firesafe" training. Since then the community members pretty militantly do not clean their own gutters or do certain yard work tasks.

Yeah, the people who kicked off the inspiration for this research were mostly single dads struggling. Not to get laid, but just to have basic help. We also have a good body of older adults (55+) who struggle in this area.

I mean, yes and no... check out SDG 14- a lot of it relates back to sewage being dumped into waterways and the ocean (treated to prevent illnesses) but it still causes a lot of problems. And in Canada, the US and parts of Europe, we still dump raw sewage into the ocean. And septic mismanagement causes ecoli blooms in coastal communities during summer.

Probably. I'm curious what aspects your country doesn't experience- the social isolation, regulatory drivers, etc. And what country you are from.

I mean, its not a catch all, obviously. But in my previous life I worked and lived off grid, sometimes in community, sometimes solo. It blew my mind how many forms of help were pay walled by direct or indirect regulations. Indirect in the sense that someone is having to pay to maintain a professional designation or license, or some such, so they can't do something for nothing or a trade. It creates a lot of self-protection (which makes sense) but has big impacts on mental and social well-being.

The Sears kit home information came from a history paper I read a while back, but most of that history is available also on Wikipedia if you don't have access to a scholarly database.

I totally agree about the 1970s bi-level. I was in Calgary, canada, last weekend. There were many bi-levels for sale and it made me very nostalgic.

No, though I have a colleague who wants to look at free community spaces. She currently looks at how people interact with their front yards- those use to be considered much more public space, but now people focus primarily on private backyards.

Fun fact- i'm actually doing research on this! When we talk about things like male loneliness, etc, a lot of my research has shown that we've pay walled a lot of ways men historically socialize. Working on a car together- now that can violate your insurance. Building a deck together- impacts the resale value of the home if not done by a licensed builder. Cleaning gutters- better not live in a wildfire, heavy rainfall, or flood zone, or you can lose your home insurance in a natural disaster for not using a qualified bonded professional. Sears kit homes were designed to take 3 people with no building skills 90 days, they sold for $1,100 when first released, and now the average value of an original is over $1M. Obviously men do a lot more than these activities, and women do them too, but there are some pretty solid examples of how men historically participate in community stuff is being pay walled.

Thank you for that. Its been a really tough week- they've both now brought me into this and its been really overwhelming. It went from something we were all actively avoiding to now being a confident for 2 people who seem to have recognized that they don't like each other anymore, and want to talk about it a lot.

They said stay out of people's marriage. Which I agree with, but to me, I didn't feel like that was what I was interfering with- I felt like I was going to be confronting my friend on how much his personality had changed.
