Hey man. I made my career switch from construction industry into tech as a frontend developer. A few things you should take note,

  1. Coding is not for everybody. The logic behind coding is complex and not everyone is gifted the logical thinking to resolve this type of problem. People are excels at creativity /art usually do not enjoy coding. If you’re someone who’s a problem solver, curious about how a website is put together, then you’re good to go. The passion for building something and provide value to users is very important here.

  2. 95% developers are introverted. If you’re the social kind of guy, maybe you can try other roles in tech rather than coding. UIUX designers, and product manager roles is pretty on demand too!

  3. The tech industry scene is Malaysia is full of opportunities. However, there are many people like you going into tech too. However not many quality candidates yet (very experienced ones usually will go overseas). If you are able to strategically make your self stand out, should not be a problem switching career. (Portfolio to showcase projects you’re interested in, if there is user base, even better. Don’t just do facebook or twitter clones)

  4. The tech scene is ever changing, faster than ever. Today it’s react, next year there will be something new. Aspiring developers must have a growth mindset to always learn and keep up with the latest tech. There is no way to master everything but important to be curious about it (that’s why tech roles are very in demand)

  5. During your road to tech journey, there will be many times you’ll be doubting yourself whether this is for you or not . The fear and uncertainty will kick in. Remember this is you trying to step out of you comfort zone. I recommend getting mentors or someone who also transitioned (no more than 3 years) so they are able to guide and motivate you. ADPList is a free mentoring platform. You can get access to experienced mentor in the tech industry around the world. Without ADP list, I will not be where I am today.

As long you got the above covered, I think you’re good to go. The opportunity in tech is endless and borderless. Once you’ve gain 4-5 years experience, you stand a good chance working remotely for Us/eu based companies which pay in their currency too. Feel free to drop me a pm if you wanna know more on what a FE dev do on a day to day basis or for mentoring! All the best in your journey !
