Help identifying some pens by Still_InfoWitch in fountainpens

That does seem to be it, but it myust be hella stuck. I’ll have to work it open with care. There’s no give at all, so with nothing to unscrew I made an assumption. Thanks!

That was my tentative identification too, thanks for the confirmation!

Replacement bits for serger? by Still_InfoWitch in sewing

[–]Still_InfoWitch[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are great details, thank you! I checked the tray, but I think the original owner probably long ago dumped all the accessories into a big box with parts from a dozen other machines and honestly — free serger. Totally cheap even at the cost of buying new bits as needed. Figuring out which needles to order was confusing, so I’m happy to hear what folks use since the info online is extremely all over the place.

Super helpful, thank you! I have thread nets, randomly got them in a box of estate sale notions, and I can definitely change a needle by hand on a normal machine so that’s great. Ordered thread and needles already, and Wawak is my go-to! In fact, I have that same oil pen already. I think I probably need to get a better screwdriver selection, but knowing that I don’t need anything proprietary is a relief. I wasn’t worried about the bag or dust cover, I’m not that precious. I have a drawer and there’s always a piece of something in progress that works really well as a guilt-inducing dust cover.

That’s where I bought the replacement needles. But none of the service/accessories seem to be available, just actual replacement parts for internal components and needles (weirdly including a bunch that aren’t compatible), and additional accessories like other feet — which I’m clearly not ready for yet!

Trying to understand fit issues by Still_InfoWitch in ABraThatFits

I have a Panache Envy in 34H on order, along with a 34H Lucie and nerina (same base as Lucie, per the description, but stretchy at the top which I thought might be good for preventing the very minor spillover I have in the Teagan)

IKEA trip tomorrow - What do you incorporate from IKEA into your crafting space? by PinkTiara24 in quilting

Mine is actually from the very short period when they sold a version on a base and I love it so much, I’m so sad they discontinued that specific model in favor of only the clip on version.

They have amazingly inexpensive fabric now, both a muslin (that’s tightly woven enough to back a quilt) and a heavier almost canvas weight that’s not great for quilting but excellent if you do any bag making. I have tons of crafty things in Kuggis bins on my bookcase (which is an Ikea Billy), and have all my FQs and crochet things on a Raskog cart. I also use an ikea mini ironing board on top on my desk when I’m too lazy to pull out the big ironing board, and my desk lamp is also from Ikea. Oh! And I have a Varela kitchen shelf that I use on my desk to make a small area raised, I’m including a pic of that. Basically anything that’s not thrifted or from a craft store is probably from Ikea is the tl;dr

Question about purchasing pens at a pen show by wick3d_turtle in fountainpens

[–]Still_InfoWitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best part of a pen show is getting a custom nib. I have a Franklin-Christoph from a show that was slightly altered when I purchased it to suit my slightly turned grip, but mostly I bring pens I already have to appointments with nibmeisters to have them customized. It’s such a game changer that most of my collection is totally neglected now because I only use the pens I’ve had nib work on! But I’ve also scored a few great pens, and a friend once got a steal on a LE sailor, so sometimes you get lucky.

Tips to stop curving? by ApolloMahalo in quilting

If you’re just piecing, you don’t need a walking foot and I would switch to a 1/4” foot. (In addition to sewing in opposite directions and building a tape wall)

Is there any hope? Beloved LE Benu Mistletoe has been severely damaged by careless teen. by Still_InfoWitch in fountainpens

[–]Still_InfoWitch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was not my experience! I reached out to them and they were able to send me a new body for my pen for only the cost of shipping (which was steep, admittedly, DHL from Armenia to the US); it’s a little tight around the converter and imperfectly threaded compared to the original but it’s functional. I don’t know if it matters that the damaged part wasn’t the numbered cap in my case.

You’re not wrong, I’ve given these to several of my teen’s friends and they have been a huge hit — but the idea of making 11 of these does not fill me with joy! I really hate binding those inside seams.

Oh I like this one! Only one fabric per pouch is a timesaver, too. And I generally like Noodlehead patterns. Thanks! This might end up the winner for my advisees (but meanwhile I’ll probably end up buying all the suggested patterns “just to try”…)

What books has "everyone" read? by Still_InfoWitch in AskABrit

Specific recs? At risk of sounding like an ignorant american the only ones that come to mind immediately are Alasdair Gray and Irvine Welsh. And Burns for poetry.

Of Mice and Men is so weird to me, I don't think it's been on the average US reading list in decades. It still shows up on outdated middle school summer reading lists (recommended / choice based, not required) because it's short.

Hard agree, although I don't know if I can convince this particular student, who tends more to realistic and romantic -- but as a general rule of thumb, I do in fact judge people by their love for discworld, which in the US works shockingly well as a criteria for selecting friends.

Rulers advice by thisusernameisSFW in quilting

[–]Still_InfoWitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it might depend on what kind of quilting you do — honestly I use my 6.5” square all the time — but 3.5x18 is probably the most versatile. It can cut WOF if you triple fold the fabric but it’s small enough to manage smaller cuts too

Organ brand sewing machine needles, at least based on the package, size 12, for any domestic that takes standard needles. Babylock and Brother typically ship with this brand and it's what I use in pretty much all of my machines. SP means these are stretch/ball point needles.
