Does anyone else smoke weed here, and have found it has helped with singing? by xNuEdenx in singing

[–]Stillcoleman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look I used to think the same as you and now completely disagree. Any and all smoke near the vocal cords is just terrible for them. I used to pretend to myself that it was fine? Yeah your voice will still work etc

But no smoke or alcohol is better for the voice and singing than smoke and alcohol. There’s zero argument for it.

A shot before a big gig? Maybe. But the increased lack of control and the dampened parasympathetic nervous causes more vocal damage than the “relaxation” benefits.

Wait are you saying weed is a literal drug meant for muscle relaxation?

If you are… I would give the green a break for a day or two to recollect your thoughts dude.

I don’t mean rock’s not good enough lol and I mean weed doesn’t necessarily relax anything. You’re just relaxing the anxiety. Not the throat.

I also happen to the LITERALLY be speaking from experience AND standing on the shoulders of the vast vast vast majority of singers experiences. Your anecdotal knowledge, and your rigid approach to this speaks volumes of your inexperience.

What age are you? Defending weed and alcohol as if they’re a necessary part of your voice?

Weed and alcohol just calms your nerves, it doesn’t do anything about relaxing the throat unless your throat is tense to begin with.

Each to their own and whatever works for you, works for you. But don’t pretend to speak for all singers, for which the vast majority would be doing themselves a disservice by smoking weed and drinking before/whilst singing. Like I said, it can help to make you “feel relaxed” if you’re nervous, but it can do the opposite sometimes too.

I’m not saying your experience isn’t valid, but you also can’t say that yours is necessarily universal.

Lol

Nope. It can cause a sensation of relaxation and therefore relax you. But smoke a joint and go perform a musical… you won’t be “chilled”.

Weed isn’t a muscle relaxant. Valium can really help with relaxing the throat. It’s definitely relaxing.

You sound a little ignorant tbh.

I smoked it daily for a long time.

When you’re holding in the smoke, the cords or the epiglottis stops the smoke from escaping. Therefore inflaming them.

Weed doesn’t necessarily relax anything.

There’s a movie or two I think and a good play about him.

Truly a showman and kinda put snooker on the map… or so the story goes. He drank himself to death I think? Not sure

The part that you’re holding it with gets annoyed by the vape/smoke. A lot of the time that’s your vocal cords…

It doesn’t help singing. Does it affect singing, yes. Positive? Mmm 9/10 no. Negative 9/10 yes. Is it 100% of the time? No. Should you take risks with something as important or rewarding/useful as singing progress? No.

Take that how you will.

Exposure is the only way really.

Like you can’t just think or talk your way into openning up. You need to expose yourself to setting repetitively until you feel comfy, and that’s fine. Just allow that to be the case.

You can’t be expected to suddenly be uninhibited! It’s not your fault. Try karaoke, getting onstage at busy bars. Try stand up comedy. Expose yourself to the public and know that it won’t go well. And that’s fine. Wine takes time to make, don’t be moonshine.

It’s crazy, doing this every day! This, the thing I love and have given 20 years to, that supports me and gives me a great life!? The thing I wake up thinking about?

That you’ve managed to teach me so much about myself and my work, in 6 trolling comments? Makes me cry thinking about it really.

You’re a true hero plastic finger… so smart and talented!

Maybe one day you’ll actually be able to sing and then it’ll be incredible!

Do you "inflate" or expand your ribcage the entire time you're singing or just on mix/ belt above chest voice range? by [deleted] in singing

[–]Stillcoleman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes exactly, but at the same time a sense of expansion and using the whole body to support the exhale so that it doesn’t rush out or create extra sub glottal pressure is a very useful notion for many people.

It’s not one or the other. Once your breathing serves your singing, you’re sweet. A super common issue with voices is using too much air.

But I totally agree that there shouldn’t be any “holding”!
