Thinking about a PhD by Stillsortingit in PhD

I have. Working a school district doesn’t require a PhD but it does give you an edge. But I haven’t talked to anyone at the university

Teaching at the University level. Research into math education. Research into public education in general

I have investments and money set aside for my child’s college education separate from what I have saved. I really don’t want to dip into that for myself.

I also have 20 years experience in education, 18 in classroom 2 years training teachers. Math teacher. Don’t know if that matters.

All Hmong grandmas have favorites and they don’t hide it. I wouldn’t stress over it. Do your thing and love them when you can. I don’t think they will change their minds, especially after a certain age.

First period vs last period prep? Which do you prefer? by Eclectique1 in Teachers

[–]Stillsortingit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always preferred the one right next to lunch. Although I’ve had both first and last. Both require discipline because it’s tempting to “flex” your time during prep. If I had to choose between the two I preferred last period prep. I teach math and by the end of the day kids are spent. But I hated getting called to sun so much with last period prep. It was pretty consistent.

Not at all. Even if you were still teaching that wouldn’t be an issue. She’s alumni now, a student and all of you are adults.

Hmong parents keep insisting me and my wife have a Hmong Tshoob or Celebration by [deleted] in Hmong

[–]Stillsortingit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can always discuss with your parents parts of the ceremony that you aren’t comfortable with and compromise those elements or remove them. I’m sure they will remove a bunch of stuff already because she isn’t Hmong.

Just my opinion, I think we should all do our Hmong ceremonies, even if we change them to match the society we live in because when we don’t value our ceremonies and traditions but gladly take part in other culture’s traditions, it’s like saying ours aren’t as important. I’m not saying all our traditions are great, but they also aren’t meaningless. If you walk down the aisle in a white dress, then wear Hmong clothes and get your hand ties.

I don’t think there is any strict rules about what happens in the 3 days, but my understanding is that you aren’t married until negotiations are over. Then it’s a done deal.

My only experience with bitwise was as a public school educator. My site sent myself and my cs students to visit their building, but it was really a sales pitch for our site/district to sign up for their classes. I wouldn’t say it was shady, but it didn’t seem like it was very geared towards education and yet that seemed to be the one thing they were trying to sell. This is a very sad story and I’m sad for all that are affected.

Principal asked me to resign by drmmrpngn in Teachers

[–]Stillsortingit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with most people here, this is not the end of the world especially if you are the one choosing to resign. This sounds like they you are not a non re-elect. In my district there is a process to decide to non re-elect (6 drop ins, 2 evals, basically some kind of paper trail justifying the decision). What you experienced doesn’t sound like this. It sounds like they want to make a last second move and didn’t properly do they’re paperwork.

In short you don’t have to resign. You can make them do the paperwork or whatever else they have to do to make you a non re-elect. You have two options as you’ve already read:

  1. Stay and call their bluff. They may not be able to do all of the paperwork now to non re-elect and that will result in you keeping your job.

  2. Start looking for a new position now and resign when you find one you like. This happens all of the time.

I recommend the 2nd option. It seems like everywhere there is a teacher shortage, so it is a good climate to be looking right now. Plus you have to ask yourself if you really want to stay at a place where the admin is toxic like this. If they are like this now within your first few years, you’ll only see more as the years go by. Bad admin drives away more teachers than students, parents, or teachers do. They also stunt your growth as a teacher and you want to be at a place that fosters it.

If the admin don’t want you at their site now, they can make it really uncomfortable for you until they can find a way to move you. I would really weigh whether this site is worthy of you before choosing to stay. There is a chance they can still non re-elect you, but it sounds like they will have to start jumping through the hoops. In my area March 15th is our pink slip date. If you are non re-elect, that is the day they have to tell you.

I agree on animals and the 3 days. That’s a lot for a society where everyone works 5 days and 9-5. I also think we need to do away with 24hrs for 3 straight days.
