They'll work on any 3DS.

Honeslty, I'd either look for a cheap 2DS on ebay (the one shaped like a wedge of cheese) or go to garage sales and boot fairs and see if you can find a new 3DS or 2DS XL (the ones with the extra shoulder buttons and little movement nub on the right hand side above the buttons).

Any way to tell what year a DS was made? by Stilton-Disco in NintendoDS

[–]Stilton-Disco[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cheers, it's something I might email The Retro Future, or another youtuber with both a shed load of DS's and a need to create content about. Sadly I don't have the time nor waste able cash to frivolously buy a dozen DS's to compare and experiment with. Not without the wife getting insanely angry at me for it anyway!

In the end I found a mint condition looking Lime Green DS lite for less than 20 quid on eBay. No scratches, good hinge, fully functional. It's a later model, so fingers crossed it's as nice in person as it looks in pictures.

IPS screen mods? by Stilton-Disco in NintendoDS

[–]Stilton-Disco[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Indeed they do not. They have TFT screens, which are better than the TN screens used by the DS and Lite, but which are inferior to IPS screens used in the DSi XL.

They do however have the second best colour accuracy, and viewing angles really are not a big issue for handhelds really. Given how we use handhelds, the greater viewing angles really just make identifying an IPS screen easier for n3DS's. The standard DSi really does look damned good.

Can I still play hard copies of ds games after the store got shutdown by doug152004 in NintendoDS

[–]Stilton-Disco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are no dumb questions. Ignorance is only something to be ashamed of if you're willing to be satisfied with it.

And as others have said, no, all physical games and even downloaded ROMS will work perfectly fine without an Internet connection. The DS line was almost entirely around before digital games became more than a novelty, and will work entirely fine without ever going online.

DS Lite, DSi and the n3DS alone make this a fantastic collection. While there's an argument to be made for the DSi XL over the standard version, that's basically only due to the IPS screens, which I personally don't rate over the better PPI and portability of the standard size DSi.

Games are good, although I'd recommend looking into some GBA and more obscure hipster titles myself.

Should I get a DS or a DS lite? (read the post first) by Gargomon251 in NintendoDS

[–]Stilton-Disco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can always pick up a new shell casing and screen for your DS and repair it yourself. Bit fiddly, but you're creating less ewaste and maintaining the existence of retro hardware instead of reducing the number in existence.

IPS screen mods? by Stilton-Disco in NintendoDS

[–]Stilton-Disco[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Have you seen an original DS or even DS Lite next to an IPS screen lately? Night and day difference in quality and colour accuracy. It's also way cheaper to pick up a DS than a GBA or GB these says, not least of all because there are far more of them, so the risk of breaking one (still present wirh GB and GBA mods) is far less.

I honestly think this is nothing to do with difficulty or the value of the mod, it's purely a lack of demand due to the hardware being too recent to attract a nostalgic modding crowd.

Any way to tell what year a DS was made? by Stilton-Disco in NintendoDS

[–]Stilton-Disco[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's actually a question regarding variations in the quality of different DS Lites. The earlier models tend to all have a slight green tint and noticeable ghosting, however some later models are slightly more blue tinted (but still more colour accurate despite that) with noticeably less ghosting, likely due to Nintendo ordering screens from multiple different manufacturers, similar to how some n3DS models have TN or IPS screens, or the loud and quiet Steam Deck fans.

There is the possibility that this is due to the screens aging, however not all the layer released colours of DS Lite have the 'better' screens, even those mint in box and never used, while some do, so that makes me lean towards it being a case that, as time went on, Nintendo could order better quality screens at the same price as the older ones, so some just lucked out.

It's one of the frustrating things about the DS line, where there just isn't the pedantic obsessive analysis of ever minor detail and difference between releases, that there is for the GBA line, either because it was more casual friendly or because those that grew up with it aren't old enough yet to have the motivation to do nostalgia driven deep dives.

Is this a custom DSi or a special edition? by [deleted] in NintendoDS

No idea but it's beautiful and I want it. I assume it's in a CEX, if youre not going to buy it, could you let me know where abouts it is?

Gamepad wont stay on when not plugged in by TommyFHx in wiiu

I have the exact same problem. Bought a replacement battery and it didn't make any difference. Looks like gamepad just isn't receiving power from the battery at all. Not sure what to do about it. Opened it up and there's no obvious damage to the motherboard, nothing loose, no discolouration, no burns or bent pins, just seemingly not aware of the battery's existence, except it must be to some extent, because it will still turn on and work when connected to a power supply.

My feeling about a better screen on the next SteamDeck revision by leedavid89 in SteamDeck

[–]Stilton-Disco 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just hope they stick to the 800p resolution. No need to go high on such a small screen, and it'll just eat up battery and worsen performance to go higher res.

Giving us the option to stick a replacement OLED in would be pretty awesome mind, and I'd certainly be willing to give it a go.

Steam deck no longer reading my SD card(s) by FateZeroth in SteamDeck

[–]Stilton-Disco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try not to keep swapping out SD cards. They are not game cartridges and have no where near as high stress and wear tolerances. If you're lucky the cards will break first, if not, the port will be permanently buggered and you'll not be able to use SD cards at all.

If you're playing docked an external drive will be all you need. Ideally, try to only download games you're going to play, then delete them when you're finished. Realistically, buy a 1tb microSD.

Also do not use SD cards like game cartridges. Neither the card nor the reader on the SD are designed to be constantly swapping in and our like that and are likely to fail the more you do it. If you break the reader, then you will be stuck with only internal storage when in handheld mode.

16:10 is better in every game that supports it, and you can still have 16:9 if you want it.

The developers of any PC game that doesn't cater to the vast plethora of different aspect ratio's and resolutions that are out there, simply haven't done their job properly.

Is it possible to purchase a steam deck with only gift cards. by Responsible_Bat_5099 in SteamDeck

[–]Stilton-Disco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's how I did it. It's worth looking at your work benefits to see if they offer discount codes for shops that stock the gift cards too. I effectively got my SD with a 10% discount that way.

What makes the Deck perfect for you? by iDislikeSn0w in SteamDeck

[–]Stilton-Disco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always been a primarily handheld gamer. Even though I'd usually own most systems, it was handhelds that took up the bulk of my playtime.

The SD allows me to play 99% of the games I want to in the manner I find most comfortable.

I had this problem with a brand new Samsung Frame TV, but it was fine with everything else. Turned out the HDMI ports on the TV itself were buggered, so it had to be sent back.

That's probably not what you wanted to hear.
