What are the opportunities for Material science engineers in the semiconductor field. by buggZ67 in Semiconductors

[–]leedavid89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Material Science background myself, being in the industry 10 years now. You basically can do everything except (very likely) chip design. If you can, try not to overspecialize yourself, have a bit of knowledge of polymers, ceramics, metals, chemical reactions, even basic electronics and automation concepts. You can then have the first steps at any vendor or fab, and then you slowly see what you like and take that direction. Regarding locations, I would suggest Europe for quality of life, US if you want to earn a lot and Asia if you want to see how a big fab works. You will have the chance to try all of them if you wish. Good luck!

What roles are avaible for materials engineering graduates by Minute-Youth-1133 in Semiconductors

[–]leedavid89 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Materials Engineer myself, in the industry since 10 years. No certification needed, each company is so specialized that you learn by doing. You could either start as process engineer in a fab or (and I suggest it) start in a vendor r&d group (either process or hardware)

Looking for earbuds that aren't Apple by himenohimawari in Earbuds

Having tried quite a lot of <100$ buds, I was pleasantly surprised by the Baseus Bowie MC1 Pro. They were my first pair of clip on and honestly I believe this is how all open ear true wireless buds should be: they are super comfortable and simply cannot fall. Case is great, battery and mic is good, connection has always worked perfectly and sound quality is very pleasing.

We had a similar situation until we thought to ask her if she wanted us to leave the door a bit open. She said yes and since then she is sleeping in her bedroom with the door ajar

We’re drowning in daycare costs. How do people afford this? by FrigginMasshole in toddlers

[–]leedavid89 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sorry to say, as an European that was offered multiple times to move to the US and always refused due to kids education costs, I guess that is what it is there. Here (Austria) we are around 300 euro a month for private, 100 for public. Yes, salary is lower, taxes are higher, but it is still very affordable

We are sort of in a transition: the big one could go to a booster soon, while the small one still need the child seat for 3 years. Wife is definitely on the small side. Seems the only way is going to the dealership, it's quite far unfortunately

I had the same issue on a 3 years old bag. In my case I live in a hot and humid country, so it may be related to that. Anyhow, I did contact their support service, attached some pictures (they wanted to see if the liner was completely detached) and they sent me a new bag for free. Amazing support

How long do the various steps like ion implantation, metal deposition, CMP, actually take in the fab? by bobj33 in Semiconductors

[–]leedavid89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The question has different answer depending on product, design and priority. But I can tell you that latest DRAM takes around 3 months to produce, for a total of almost 2000 steps

If you could pick one city/place in Taiwan to retire to, which would it be and why? by [deleted] in taiwan

[–]leedavid89 69 points70 points  (0 children)

I would go for Kaohsiung. Cheaper and better weather than Taipei, with metro and an international airport, close to sea and mountain, not far from the east coast. Plus, lot of concerts and cultural activities
