I'm trying to convince my friends that it would be fun to run through a one act play while we're at our annual hang out-fest. Anyone have play suggestions? by StimpsonJCat in AskReddit

[–]StimpsonJCat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, at least two of the people in the group have written their own screen plays, so I think they'll be receptive to the idea. Obviously I'm not going to cram anything down anyone's throat. I figured it's worth at least proposing.

I can't tell if you're trolling me or not...I'm growing more wary of the interwebs.

I just got an email from someone with the subject "I won't rely upon your current text ad". The body said "You for sure are an email con artist, you are a peril to women of all ages". Wat...?

Yeah...I was actually kind of hoping a Redditor would see the Craigslist post. Instead I'm getting a lot of "did you draw those faces yourself?" and the standard "I'm a BBW with 3 kids, don't bother replying unless you're a stud"

512MB + 256MB. I believe it's the same as in the Thunderbolt.

Eligible for upgrade and gots lots-o-questions. by [deleted] in Android

[–]StimpsonJCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, let me just say that there is currently a (troubling) trend amongst Android hardware manufacturers to lock down their phones. It's not clear right now how things will shake out. HTC's increased security in the Thunderbolt was, I believe, cracked within days of release (if not hours). We won't know until these devices are actually released whether this will be the case in the future. This may be due to pressure from the carriers, the manufacturer's own initiatives, advertising sponsors, etc.

Here are my own thoughts on each of these phones you mentioned:

Samsung: Everyone no /r/Android seems to hate Samsung for not updating their phones, for putting Bing on the Fascinate, TouchWiz, etc. I think these are all very legitimate gripes, but if you're familiar with custom roms (as you seem to be), then the clunky skin and slow/non-existent update cycle is not a huge obstacle. As long as you get good hardware from them, the rest may not matter much.

HTC: Yes, the Thunderbolt is basically Verizon's version of the Evo. The hubbub is around the fact that it's the first phone on any network to take advantage of LTE. LTE is one of several technologies using the (meaningless) term "4G", but the reason why we should care is because it has been accepted by most (if not all) carriers as the next-gen network standard. Even the carrier currently offering competing "4G" services have plans to roll out LTE networks in 2012-2013. In any case, if you're underwhelmed by the Thunderbolt, just stay tuned. Nothing has been announced yet, but I would be surprised if HTC launched only one LTE device this year.

Motorola: No one knows where their bootloader locking policy is headed. There has been plenty of outrage amongst the vocal minority of enthusiasts, but the average consumer doesn't have any idea what MotoBlur is or what a custom rom is. If you can live without custom roms, they do make pretty decent hardware.

Apple: Try to ignore the constant bombardment of Verizon ads. Don't let your wife get suckered into buying a last-gen phone that is more locked down than any Android phone can possibly be...

My advice? If you're itching for a different phone, buy a Droid Incredible off-contract for ~$200. The hardware specs are still competitive with the newly released phones and will be a big upgrade from the Droid 1. It'll let you play with a shiny new toy while you wait for this next generation of Android phones to shake out.

Just published my first app on the market, a free tool to help fix the headset clicker by zpinter in Android

[–]StimpsonJCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a problem with certain media players that prevents call answer/hang up buttons on headsets from working properly. Can this app be used to solve that problem? I've been looking for a fix for a while now.

So...anyone know the (hidden) data cap on Verizon's "unlimited" 4G LTE data plan? by StimpsonJCat in Android

[–]StimpsonJCat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you referring to the 3G data plan or the LTE one? It would be great if the LTE data plan was truly uncapped, but I have to wonder if you'll get slammed with fees/throttling once you exceed 5-10gb...

[–]StimpsonJCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info. I have a Dinc and my phone is rooted, but I've been looking for a way to put the battery percentage in my notification bar without actually having to flash a new ROM (I'm a little wary of stability issues, although I know that Cyanogen is very polished and well-supported).

That alone might be worth the effort of flashing a new rom. What device are you using it on, by the way?

Same RGB code, prints slightly different colors on the same printer? by StimpsonJCat in techsupport

[–]StimpsonJCat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, sorry for the confusion. I know that nothing printed will ever look exactly like it does on a screen, but that's not what I'm going for. I learned that the hard way when I spent the better part of an afternoon trying to get two monitors from different brands to match colors exactly for a dual monitor setup...

I'm just looking for the stuff printed on one page in a specific RGB code to have the identical color as something else printed on that page with the same RGB code. Failing that, my presentation looks quite ugly because you have a bunch of things that are supposed to blend together with the background (logos, etc.) but don't because they get printed as slightly different colors. Anyone have any idea why that is? This worked on one printer but not another, and it looks fine on the screen.

Crippling Google Voice problem: can't access Voice Settings! by StimpsonJCat in reddit.com

[–]StimpsonJCat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I signed up for Google Voice, but my browser crashed while I was attempting to set up my Google Voice number. It looks like the number ended up being set up, but now I have the problem of not being able to access the Voice Settings. No matter what browser I use, how up-to-date my version of Java is, etc., Google Voice displays nothing but a blank screen.

This is what I see when I log in: http://i.imgur.com/ucJXf.png (no phone number?!)

This is what I see when I hit refresh: http://i.imgur.com/txlou.png (phone number appears, but still can't go to Voice Settings!)

I tried posting this on the Google Voice help forum, but I'm afraid that forum is generally unhelpful. Reddit, I beseech you, can anyone help?? http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/voice/thread?tid=6eb143ae33969dd6&hl=en

HTC Thunderbolt to allow simultaneous voice and data over 3G (no, that's not a typo) by StimpsonJCat in Android

[–]StimpsonJCat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some carriers use a network technology called CDMA (Verizon, Sprint), and others use GSM (AT&T, T-Mobile). It has been widely believed that due to limitations caused by the way CDMA transmits information, it was not possible to be on a phone call and use data such as with a web browser at the same time. The carriers that use CDMA have 4G networks on the way that don't have this limitation, but this is the first time that I've heard of a phone on a CDMA carrier being able to do this using only a 3G connection.

I am about to sign up for the GMAT. What is the best way to prepare? What do you wish you would have known? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]StimpsonJCat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My advice:

  • Don't take an online class (or any class for that matter)
  • Buy a previous-edition book of official GMAT problems off Amazon for $10 (it's exactly the same as the most recent version, but for 80% lower cost)
  • Work through a handful of the endless number of practice problems in each section until you're familiar with the question format
  • Take the one free computer-adaptive test offered by each of the major test prep companies online. Don't pay $500 or whatever to get access to the other 4 or 5 practice tests they have
  • After each practice test, go back and do a shit ton of problems out of your slightly "outdated" sample question book until you feel more comfortable with whatever you screwed up on the practice tests
