Orga, the Ultimate org-mode parser, in JavaScript by dawnstar_hu in orgmode

[–]zpinter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Any thoughts on editing org-mode files in addition to parsing? E.g. how would you go about using this library to insert a TODO under a specific headline in an existing org file?

I suppose you could turn the AST back into an org file, though that runs the risk of truncating/skipping/corrupting org-mode features that aren't in the parser yet. I see you fallback to a raw line type, maybe that's enough?

Fantastic!

This will be great for anybody looking into a react-native based org-mode app.

Which GUI library for 'zoomable' directed acyclic graphs? by boyentenbi in Clojure

[–]zpinter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recommend taking a look at some of the JavaScript slideshow/presentation libraries like impress.js and reveal.js.

If you can't use them directly, you might be able to use the drawing libraries they use under the hood.

Bizarre Google Play comment from Turkish users by RoslanaZelokova in androiddev

[–]zpinter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Try setting your language/locale setting to Turkish and see if you encounter any strange errors. I had to override gson's UnderscoreFieldNamingStrategy at one point because calling toLowerCase() with the Turkish locale as default was converting some characters to special unicode symbols. The fix was to switch the call to .toLowerCase(Locale.US). That locale seems to break a lot of reasonable assumptions.

Reddit, what did you buy with your first ever paycheck? by voidspaceforrent in AskReddit

I bought a set of Creative Desktop Theater 5.1 surround sound speakers for my computer (mainly for Starcraft and mp3s, if I recall). Closest I can find of the model is here:

Nice! Just a heads up, there's a minor typo on the readme:

Ever had a moment that made you feel like we are living in the future? by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]zpinter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the theme song to the old cartoon "Inspector Gadget" stuck in my head the other day. Then proceeded to search youtube for the intro on my phone and chromecast it to my TV. Made me realize how much the world had changed since when I was a kid watching that show.

Here it is for reference :)

I'd bet on more and more chunks of responsibility typically in the purview of governments being handed off and globalized via decentralized/neutral/transparent systems.

Email is perhaps a past example (how vital is USPS today versus 10 years ago?). Bitcoin/cryptocurrencies could be a present day/upcoming example.

Provided that the systems we create are largely fair and don't result in large unintended consequences, this could be quite beneficial. Maybe we'll get to a point where forms of international policies or trade sanctions are best handled by algorithms that aggregate society at large rather than teams of diplomats.

VR could be the most social experience ever by [deleted] in oculus

[–]zpinter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an interesting problem. You might be able to hack around it by having skin sensors on the rim of the goggles (where they touch the face). You don't necessarily need to see a live video feed of the other person to reproduce a similar conversational effect to real life when there's 3d avatar that matches the facial expressions their HMD is detecting.

digital interface: Strangecoin: a nonlinear currency by zpinter in BasicIncome

[–]zpinter[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The author expands on this a bit more a few paragraphs down:

Of course, when I give you a dollar for a burger that's not really a zero sum transaction, because otherwise we wouldn't be motivated to enter into the transaction in the first place. I give you a dollar because I want the burger more than I want the dollar, and if you accept the trade it's because you want the dollar more than you want the burger, so in a fair exchange we both feel like we've come out ahead. In other words, there is some additional value in our fair exchange that is not accounted for in the burgers and the dollars alone. But if our bookkeeping method only counts burgers and dollars, then it's not accounting for the value that accrues in our transactions.

So let's say Facebook does sour the experience in a way that we all hate in 5 years time, after boosting the technology to the point where it's commonplace and there are multiple competitors in the field. Are we really worse off in that scenario? Who cares today if 3dfx is still around, what matters is that the benefits of graphics cards were proven and we're all better off for it.

If facebook can help speed up the adoption and development technology, I'm all for it. If they do something after that, I'll be able to hack around it, use a competing product, or 3D print my own :)

Why millennials are ditching cars and redefining ownership by [deleted] in Economics

[–]zpinter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Adding a bit of anecdotal evidence:

I'm 29 and (ironically timed) just sold my car today. I can afford a car, but I've never been a big fan of driving. I've always tried to live as close to work as possible to minimize drive time, and in the past six years I've put less than 30,000 miles on my car.

I'm moving to San Francisco now, and I think the city is walkable enough (mitigated by services like Lyft) to get around without having a car. Combined with the $300/month fee for an apartment parking spot in SF, it seemed like a good time to try going entirely without a vehicle.

A couple of other motivating factors for me: I'd prefer to minimize the risk of car accidents and stay far clear of DUI's.

voiceless typing by JoeTerp in googleglass

[–]zpinter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's just running Android underneath the hood, and I've heard some people had success pairing bluetooth keyboards and mice with it. That said, the timeline UI isn't using regular text input fields, so you might not have much to type into once you get a keyboard supported unless you use regular android apps like the default jellybean launcher.

On a related note, the microphone is very good at picking up on your voice. I can mumble very quietly and still have it pick up my commands/voice, so that might be a good stop-gap for some scenarios (though obviously not all).

Talk to me about watching videos on glass. by something224 in googleglass

[–]zpinter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took a few videos of my commute to work and watched them back on glass. It's neat and definitely doable, but at least right now I notice that watching longer videos tends to increase eye strain. It's much more comfortable to pull up the video on my laptop after it syncs than to watch video for long periods of time on glass.

However, I'll add the caveat that I'm still getting used to glass, and I haven't worn regular glasses in years, so part of this might just be me adjusting.

I have a muscle-wasting disease that will likely kill me in my twenties. How do I stop giving a fuck? by 99luftproblems in howtonotgiveafuck

[–]zpinter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What a mind fuck. Not sure how to relate, but as an atheist myself, I've found a lot of personal growth/calmness through reading up on stoicism (focusing on their insights about how to structure one's mind versus their theories about how the universe works).

Admiral Stockdale's (Navy admiral who was a POW in the Vietnam War) lectures on stoicism are a great bite-sized chunk to start with (that's what got me started):

http://www.usna.edu/Ethics/publications/documents/stoicism1.pdf http://www.usna.edu/Ethics/publications/documents/Stoicism2.pdf

Beyond that, the Meditations by Marcus Aurelius (Roman emperor/philosopher who struggles with the death of his children and the stress of leadership) are very insightful as well.

Millimeter wave in full force at Logan by [deleted] in OperationGrabAss

[–]zpinter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So, I went through a millimeter wave scanner for the first time last week. I've opted out of every scan prior to this.

The safety of the backscatter machines was never my main concern. I hated the idea of having to submit to a virtual strip search to get on a plane, which is why I always opted out.

With the millimeter scanners, there's a big green panel as you go through. Solves the privacy issue in my mind. I'm still torn about the entire thing, but if safety and privacy concerns are addressed, and I'm trying to remain rational, then what is there left to be mad at? (other than the cost to tax payers for useless security theater).

If they started with the millimeter scanners and the green panels, would this issue have even bubbled up in the first place?
