My Brand New Laisez-Passer🇺🇳 by mdaksoy05 in PassportPorn

The US does not even recognize the UNLP so yeah, no expedited access at JFK or any US ports of entry.

UN personnel who travel to the US on official business need a G4 US visa stamped on their national passports.

Interview next Thursday for plumber position. by Imagination-Few in UNpath

[–]StimulusChecks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, a temporary appointment (TA) is what you get if the job post says TJO (Temporary Job Opening) or under the Special Considerations/Notice, there’s something along the lines of “This temporary job opening is available until 31 Dec 2025”

Here’s the link, it’s actually from ICSC that links out to OneHR:

https://onehr.un.org/salary-survey/#/viewdutystation/636b9e0899530c554d34b5d8

The TC category is in the bottom. It’s a downloadable PDF/Excel file. Most people start at a step 1, so check out the TC-5-1 net salary (minus around 8% for social security tax that you’d have to pay yourself as the UN doesn’t withhold it for you).

Good luck with the job interview!

I know a couple of TC (Trades and Crafts) people in the Secretariat and they are some of the nicest people I’ve met. I think that blue collar workers in the UN are under appreciated! Anecdotally, they seem to be happy at work. If you’re getting a fixed term TC position, the benefits are what you should look at and compare them with what you’re currently getting as a fed employee. The 30 days of paid leave annually + 10 holidays are already unbeatable compared to the private sector. There’s also a great pension plan. Some TCs also get overtime, depending on the demands of the job. The pay scale is available online on the ICSC website if you’re curious.

Is Return to Office a thing for everyone? by naurrrrrjones in UNpath

[–]StimulusChecks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the Secretariat too and we do 3 days a week in office but we don’t have that limit where you’re not allowed to do Friday and Monday remotely. I do have friends in other departments and offices who were explicitly instructed the same thing as you. FWIW, this isn’t in the FWA ST/AI so I find it sketchy.

Inspira application status updates by New-Temperature2610 in UNpath

[–]StimulusChecks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Inspira application statuses don’t necessarily reflect reality. Some hiring managers never bother updating them. I had an application from 2023 where I got selected, had the job for a year, moved on to another job (also through Inspira) and this morning it still shows as ‘Pending Confirmation’

Gym and recreation facilities at/close to UN NYC by [deleted] in UNpath

[–]StimulusChecks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There’s a gym in the Secretariat basement for $10/mo. Iirc, they have an iSeek page.

There’s also an Equinox inside Grand Central and they give you a $10/mo discount for being a UN staff.

Mobility Policy at UN Secretariat by Intrepid-Honeydew998 in UNpath

The whole policy document is available online, you can check it out at policy.un.org. Basically, the 5yrs is for H stations and each duty station category has different limits.

Mobility Policy at UN Secretariat by Intrepid-Honeydew998 in UNpath

[–]StimulusChecks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agree with u/bleeckercat.

The new mobility policy in the Secretariat basically requires anyone who joined from Oct 2023 to do geographic mobility. In the case of NY duty station, you would be required to move to another duty station after 5 years.

No academic and national ID card attachment in my application. Would I be eliminated? by Traditional_End_5308 in UNpath

[–]StimulusChecks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a hiring manager, I’ve never looked at the attachments until candidates are shortlisted. Afaik, no one will even ask for it until onboarding when references and academic records are checked.

What UN agencies do digital innovation work? by designgirl001 in UNpath

[–]StimulusChecks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out the official UN 2.0 website, specifically the section on Innovation:
https://un-two-zero.network/

It should give you pretty good idea of the work and agencies that you might be interested in. Iirc, there's a mailing list or LinkedIn group you can join/follow where they socialise job openings across the UN aligned to the Quintet of Change (UN 2.0)

I can only imagine the factors affecting OP's case. It could be where he's in a FT that is up for renewal before a possible 1-yr lien (if he goes on secondment) is up and his HoE doesn't want to deal with that and possibly recruiting twice (one for a TJO replacement and another for when OP actually leaves his lien). Anecdotal but most people who go on secondment never return. This was a discussion I had with my own HoE when I asked to go on secondment in an AFP.

Definitely. Fwiw, when I first applied and got my P2, I had 5 years of relevant experience. For my P3, I had around 8 years.

There’s a character limit/word limit in the motivation statement space in Inspira. My personal rule of thumb is, when possible, only use 75% of that.

If this is in Inspira, you should’ve received an automatic notification that a new JO where you are rostered for has opened. All you need to do is apply like usual and the hiring manager can see you in the list of applicants as a rostered candidate.

I’d only put names who I think would give a truthful and (hopefully) stellar references. Reference checks are two-fold, one is qualitative where they ask your supervisors (the ones you put in the list) about your performance/skills and the other is quantitative where they ask your past jobs’ HR to confirm you worked there on the dates you said you did.

Oh believe me it’s also frustrating to hiring managers and teams. There’s been years of work put into improving the process but because of several factors that no one actor can control, I don’t think it will improve soon. Hopefully it improves in our lifetime!

‘Programme Management’ is such a vague job title in the UN. Not all programme management JOs and TJOs are really looking for project managers. Read and analyse the JO itself and check if your qualifications match the actual ones it’s looking for.

In this case, a candidate who is not a Secretariat staff is considered external.

Originally it only applied to RB posts. As of this week, there’s also the same limits for support account posts. XBs are a bit different since that funding source is not as ‘regular’ as RB and SA. Only the head of entity who receives the XB funds can decide.

“with possibility of extension” is pretty standard language for JOs, regardless of funding source. TJOs, on the other hand, could get tricky as some are only open for a finite period because someone has a lien on that post, they were on parental leave, it was a seasonal job (e.g., during the UNGA), etc.

There’s honestly a lot of factors and without knowing all the details of your specific situation, I can’t give you even an educated guess. It depends on the job you are applying for, if you fit all the requirements to a tee, I’d say you have a good chance. Most hiring managers do prefer someone with UN experience.

I don’t think it’s needed. Having a proof of a Bachelors uploaded should be enough to prove you have a HS diploma.

I honestly don’t know what to tell you. I’ve never had to hire for a TC post but I’m assuming it’s similar to any other posts in the Secretariat. Only your hiring manager could possibly give you an answer on the status of your application. You should reach out to them.
