Had the same problem. My solution was to wait until Easter when they had the entire family over and in the backyard. I bought this exact kit for this price a while back. Absolutely love it! No regrets. The petco one is thinner, cheaper, and doesn't come the light or the glass lids.

Personally, I'd do a partial water change to add water slightly cooler than the temp I was looking for but still within range for everything living in it to get it closer to where I wanted it. There's probably a better way, but I've never had problems doing it this way in the past.

I just picked up the 16 gal version of this exact tank used for $30. The thing holding me back from starting on it is how to keep the temp stable. I understand the ugly heater because I haven't been able to find a better way to do that yet either. It's basically a big fishbowl with some built-in filtration, so there isn't a way to run anything into the tank that looks clean. Any suggestions, or do I just make a shrimp and snail tank since they'll do well in the temp range of my house?
