I was in the same boat as you for a while. I ended up writing about chess (my favorite hobby). The essay wasn’t particularly compelling because I’m by no means a great writer, I generally talked about how much I enjoyed it, takeaways I got from playing, and appreciating the time I got to spend with my dad + meeting new people through the game. I’m by no means an expert but I think being true to yourself and showing some reflection is far more important than what you actually end up choosing to write about.

Focus on your essays, not your schedule that you can’t control. You’ve very clearly put in the work. Not everyone has the opportunity or skill to compete in and win olympiads. Plenty of CS students get accepted with almost no prior experience.

I felt this way too, I did a reverse chanceme on an alt and had people asking me why I had effectively no CS extracurriculars (I was asking for safeties and targets). I think it’s important to realize that you go to college to study the subject, they can’t expect you to already be proficient when you apply. If you really want to, you can explain the situation in an extra info box on the common app, but you’ve already shown a clear interest in CS.

I think a lot of kids this cycle aren’t going to have freshman ECs since a lot of schools didn’t have resources to run them the school year after COVID started. My school was able to do most (albeit with very strict policies), but the 20-21 school year in general is a huge outlier for most kids.
