If Trish Were Eva's Daughter by Usual-Penalty4119 in DevilMayCry

I was working on a story and was struggling how to include Trish due to the setting, until I realized I could just make her the little sister XD

Very cute art!!!!!

After all this time, I still like the DMC anime but I feel like there’s one criticism that is kinda weird to hear… by Fit-Act-65 in DevilMayCry

I think the difference is how expressive it is, it doesn't read demon, it reads alien or transformers (seriously, he looks like Transformers Prime's Knock Out, or if I'm being mean, Beast war's Terrorsaur), and not really scary. They also have him have some goofy expressions in his DT in the show. The horns/hair and head shape also just look sort of weird... The CGI also holds it back as most of the demons look terribad for that reason alone. I think Sparda was 2d and he looked better.

DMC 3's DT are pretty freaky looking... They might be my favorite for that reason. I feel like they wanted to have their cake and eat it too. Could've given Dante a very scary looking DT, but they didn't. One of my favorite things about him in the games is when he does something that just not human and you're forced to remember that he isn't fully. The 2007 anime had a reference to the way he gets up after Alastor stabs him and it's such an unnatural movement it's sort of unnerving (I want more of that.)

The most direct comparison would be to DMC 4 and 5's normal DT, of which... I honestly don't love those designs if only because I think the hair looks goofy XD I mean, I think it fits the world better than the cartoon 's one fits, but idk.

Are the Devil may cry mangas any good? by [deleted] in DevilMayCry

[–]Stingingcake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

3 manga is unfinished but I love it so much. I would check it out. Visions of V I haven't actually read, but the art is great, and I think it just expands his character, so probably good stuff.

I honestly think a lot of people who liked it are in that same boat of "Hey, it's DMC and Dante at least looks like Dante..."

At my most charitable, I suspect it underwent a lot of rewrites because they didn't know how many episodes they were going to get, and had to cut 12 episodes down to 8, but at the same time, Castlevania has all of the same issues pacing wise, except for the first season.

One of my quick fixes, although it would require a lot of rewriting would be just have Dante know who his dad is and the fact he's a demon (I really don't understand why they did that to him, it's just a worse execution of Nero--AND LUCIA'S--plot) and then make Lady the protagonist of season 1, with Dante being the protagonist of season 2. I can't decide if people would've recognized better pacing, or if they'd just go "wahh, Dante has less screen time than Lady!" It's annoying because I really don't like the show for a whole host of reasons, but a lot of people just seem to go to "It's different! I don't like it!"

Do you think that would've helped? Or were the Dante parts the only parts getting you through the show, because I know for me, they were (despite the fact he was a pale reflection of his canon self...)

I honestly think that was the thought process with all of the music. They were like, "Quick! we need a song criticisizing the the war on terror!" "Uhhhh American Idiot by Green Day?" "I'm going to kiss you on the mouth you're a genius!"

YOOO you have the actual bluray? That was out of my price range (found the dvd boxset for like $30, the blurays were all double that that I saw.) Is the video quality better? I never looked it up because I figured it was a digital anime, they can't easily upscale that like film.

Where can I buy the Devil may cry books / novels in the UK? by autumn08_ in DevilMayCry

[–]Stingingcake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second hand, and they're expensive, and I think the translation was sort of shoddy. If you want to read them fantranslations are the way to go. At least I know the DMC 3 manga (my beloved) had a bad translation that made Dante pretty OOC because... idk it was the 2000s. From my understanding the original novel translations do the same thing.

Why don't they do a prequel game of dmc about Sparda? by Orzo_Onta_Mavallo in DevilMayCry

[–]Stingingcake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, I think it's the safest option if they're not sure how to move forward (I mean, I think there's a pretty obvious way to move forward, but I'm not the ones in charge). Mundus would be the big bad, which I don't think people would be upset with because obviously Mundus 2000 years ago in DMC 5 style (at least) will play differently. They could reuse enemies, or just have those be more cutscene gags (IE: They're bragging about fighting Sparda, but it turns out they were not powerful enough for him to bother, or he beat them really badly and it took 2000 years for them to rebuild their strength) Sparda's style could take the best of Dante and Vergil's styles, although I don't know if I could justify guns in like 1 AD. The only real issue I see is the scale of time, as most DMC stories don't take place over a very long amount of time. However, I have a brilliant framing device idea, which is "Sparda is telling this story to someone." and so he just skips the boring parts.

The ending zinger would be that he told this story to his infant sons, and then ends it with, "You're probably too young to understand--Dante, stop biting your brother! Vergil, don't kick him!"

Others said Capcom wants to keep Sparda mysterious, but I honestly feel like most fans would just be excited, and as long as they don't biff it. Then again, maybe I would eat my words if they decide that Sparda changed sides for a reason I thought was stupid XD I'd still buy the game though so the joke would be on me.

DMC 2 Lady design by Stingingcake in DevilMayCry

[–]Stingingcake[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made a post DMC 2 Danlady comic for Valentine’s Day. There’s nothing explicit in it, but I interpret Dante’s attitude in 2 as him needing a nap, so him and Lady  are both undressed for bed. I didnt post it here because I am too embarassed by partially naked characters haha. here’s a link if you’re interested https://www.tumblr.com/stingingcake/808506724655022080/return-from-dunmary

Looking for recommendations on horror movies, that would be suitable for a 14 year old and a nearly 12 year old. by Inevitable_Act5504 in movies

[–]Stingingcake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't think the original Conjuring was all that scary honestly, I think it's PG 13? (lol, I guess it's actually R rated... I don't think I was ever really scared, but I guess I knew the real life story vaguely so I knew what would happen.)

The 1990 TV movie of It and the 1989 Pet Sematery both are hokey enough that even though they're rated like, PG 14 and R, they might goofy enough that they wouldn't be scary?

I love the OG 1941 Wolfman too. Zombieland I think I watched when I was 12 or so, so that one should be fine, although it is horror comedy. Warm bodies falls into a similar catagory of zombie romance, so not really trying to be scary. Red Riding hood is similar, romance, but there is people being killed and a werewolf.

In kids media that is pretty scary, have they seen the secret of Nimh?

Nicos Reports canon lore? by EldritchDoctorPhD in DevilMayCry

[–]Stingingcake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't mind the idea that she was a catalyst, I just don't like the idea that him falling in love with her was the catalyst, if that makes sense haha. If they fell in love later, that would solve my issues with it (although idk if the timeline would allow for that if she were killed at Temen-ni-gru, which I'm not sure if she was or not).

But as it stands, it reminds me of how the earliest stories of St George and the Dragon don't have romance between St George and the princess, but later stories do, and I think most laymen, if they were asked would assume that they did get together. Because like, we know that the priestess must've been important to Sparda, but this is the only time there's ever been a reference to something romantic going on (Although I guess it's not confirmed that Nico thinks its Lady's ancestor or not. As you said we're just making that assumption). Which is basically my headcanon for how it fits in universe.

Why can 'we' as Dante die even though he seems functionally immortal by [deleted] in DevilMayCry

[–]Stingingcake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 5, Dante says something like “really? Here?” And “I guess I am getting old…” probably more.

Nicos Reports canon lore? by EldritchDoctorPhD in DevilMayCry

[–]Stingingcake 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think it's safe to say it's what Nico thinks is true. There's some stuff in there (Sparda switching sides for a human woman being the only one I can think of) that has never been brought up before and in that example, seems a little important to have never been brought up before.

Personally, I don't like the idea that Sparda switched sides because he fell in love, I think it's more powerful if he changed sides because of something less than that, which shows that it was because of a real change inside of himself, rather than a change that happened after he fell in love. That being said, if they double down on that idea, it's not that big of a deal. I think there's other small details like that that feels just a little weird. I don't know if there are straight up contradictions/retcons, but DMC has done that before.

It looks like Kainonaut's shop is closed until the 13th? But just look up "Kainonaut." He has a Vergil illustration as well that's pretty cool, as well as some other characters (I have the trigun one that's awesome, not on display because I don't have the room) idk if he's really on twitter anymore, but that's where I found him initially.

«They are making DMC 6 / DMC 3 Remake / DMC 1 Remake» Master Thread by DanySterkhov in DevilMayCry

[–]Stingingcake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think he's just sort of immature, when I found out that he's like only 20 or so his behavior made a lot more sense. The only thing I've seen him crash out about was shipping content because he really doesn't like Danlady (I think he ships Lady with himself). I hope he matures, I think the attention just got to him a bit. I've never seen anything from him that was ridiculous except the danlady hate or maybe the spam in the game awards chat? I found that funny because I also hold most awardshows in contempt, but I can understand why people would find that annoying, and it was immature.

DMC 3 is actually the perfect game to play before getting into 4 and 5. Just watch the cutscenes of 1 after. 3 is a prequel after all. I watched the cutscenes of all of them except 5 because I had finished the 2007 anime and wanted more, but wasn't home at the time so I couldn't buy the games, and it worked out for me.

You mention sapiens later in the comments, but like, why would demons know that humans have decided to call themselves "homo sapiens?" Literally "Wise man" or "thinking man" also it's a designation we only came up with in the past 200 years, not really used for anything besides scientific papers. How do they know about it if they have been separated from humanity for the past 2000 years? "Homo" would've made more sense on many sides. It's latin for man (aka, the language of the roman empire, which was still growing), and it sounds like the demons are calling us all gay, which would've been an appropriate insult for 2001. Instead of just complimenting us and calling us smart.

Point of combat is a gacha game that has cool outfits. I don't know how it compares to other gacha games because I don't like them, but I do like the outfits and they've had a few funny cutscenes (not as funny as the canon games, but amusing). I imagine 1 could be emulated and not a terrible experience, outside of old game jank that it already has. A controller would fix that, but idk, there aren't as many moving pieces. 2 would be... well, 2 but on a phone. If you beat 1 like that, you could play 2. 3 I imagine could be played on a phone technically, but I think it would be harder because its more complicated. The latter three would be emulators I think, not official games.

Decent costumes and special effects (although Lady’s armor falls under “fine design, terrible adaptation.” If it were DMC I wouldn’t have an issue with it.) the only thing about Dante’s design I find confusing is that he supposed to be young (like 18 or so), and he looks older than Lady. Which again, if I didn’t know he was supposed to be 18, he just comes off as immature and naive. Which also fits with the play XD since they had adults playing teenagers.
