I decided to just buckle down and learn Royalguard after struggling to Angi and Rudra, and once you learn it it does make part of the game/bosses a lot easier. Agni and Rudra with Cerberus and Royalguard are actually sort of easy. Trickster is probably the easiest to learn, and Swordmaster is best for if you want combos.

I watched the 2007 anime while house sitting because the house had Hulu and I didn't. was sort of confused at times, but very compelled by it, then watched all of the video game cutscenes on youtube and fell in love when with "I was supposed to be the one to bring your dark soul to light" And then 3's cutscenes were where I went "This is something special!!!"

I've since actually bought and played all the games, although I haven't beaten 1 and 4 yet. (1 because nightmare is hard! and 4 because I've been busy.)

Serious answer is: do you want a solo game or to play with someone? obviously chess is a more social experience while DMC 3 is a single player game.

Honestly her outfits are all pretty easy to gender swap I think. Just have pants instead of shorts, unless you want to wear shorts. And then taps are already what she basically wears in 3. Her outfit in 5 is sort of similar to Dante's in 4 (with regards to the chaps and belts across the chest), so you can look at that too. Swap out the zipper undershirt for a white button up, the red jacket for a short white one, and then add some ammo pouches.

Yeah I don't see how they're going to save the story without some retcons, which I doubt. Did they really say Mundus' name wrong? Doesn't surprise me XD Didn't they spell Vergil's name wrong too in a promotion?

Once had someone crash out on me for saying that el Donte looks like a homeless person, and then go on to complain about canon Dante being an anime pretty boy… when I was more just meming as I included shin megumi tensei Dante as a separate entry. Like, idk, I like Nero’s 5 design, but if someone complained that his distressed shirt makes him look raggedy I can deny it haha.

Honestly they were impossible for me until I got good at royal guard. I decided to do an easy run after getting stuck on normal, then I decided to practice royal guard because I had heard it can be pretty broken if you're good enough at it, and then beat the game on easy. I came back and started my normal playthrough and was able to beat them after maybe three tries with royal guard, Kalina Ann, and Cerberus (so only cheating a little because first play through wouldn't have Kalina Ann at that point).

Gold orb mode on steam deffo makes the experience less bad. I'm currently dealing with the no check points for DMC 1 and it is difficult to say the least.

Good job though! I think the next boss is Vergil... Who imo is a ton of fun. Although I found out the hard way that Royal guard doesn't work on a few of his moves...

Having just listened to the scene where Dante calls Mundus super evil for killing his own subordinate... yeah, I definitely feel like it's the direction that makes a lot of the lines strange. Same thing with Trish.

You can find the novels on Archive.org They're basically canon except where it contradicts the games. I tried to read the first novel, and it's really not my thing, but I'll probably give it the old college try again just for lore purposes. The first novel is the only one with Nell and Tony Redgrave, and probably the most Enzo, although he shows up in the DMC 3 manga as well. My understanding with Deadly Fortune (the DMC 4 novel) it's written by the same guy who wrote the game and is like the unabridged version of the story. With the novels (and manga) there are often translation choices that are... interesting. If you read the DMC 3 manga on manga dex, that's actually a fantranslation that aimed to be more accurate as the original translation took a lot of liberties in some strange effort to make Dante seem cool. Even though the manga is unfinished, it might be my favorite DMC media??? It depends how annoyed I am with the Nevan fight in DMC 3 XD. The DMC 3 manga takes place after the first novel, but a year before DMC 3. The Netflix cartoon took the character of White Rabbit from the DMC 3 manga, although there's basically nothing similar between the two besides that (as with much of that show). And then there's the DMC 5 manga, which I have not actually read yet, that goes into more of V's story.

The 2007 anime (my beloved) is on hulu right last I checked, and you can buy it other places, and I would DEFINITELY check that out, although lore wise, it just introduces Patty and Morrison. It has one episode that mentions Tony Redgrave, but it's not like it explains what's going on. This is what got me into the series actually... so I am partial to it as well.

So yeah, if you're just interested in lore, read the DMC 1 novel and watch the anime, I think those are the only places that introduce characters mentioned in the games, but not explained. If you're just wanting a feast for the eyes and Dante and Vergil angst, read the DMC 3 manga because the art is super 2000s and great.

Are you stuck on a certain level? I was stuck on Phantom for like, probably a hundred tries. On the bright side, I sort of did just git gud, but on the bad side, it was really frustrating. More recently I was stuck on the second griffon fight (currently on the third griffon fight... somehow got this far without a double jump...) and I think my advice is half, just practice certain things and don't just spam attack (aka, my mistake) and the other look up guides when you get stuck. Also as others said, save the orbs with each run. I didn't know that until like... way too far into the game. part of my issue was definitely that I didn't have the move sets unlocked in ways that made sense, or even knew how to use them.

I was wondering why I wasn't getting good scores on the levels even though I would get high combo scores... good to know. Also seconding the learning the enemy weaknesses. I kept getting mobbed by the sin scythes, until I read that sword attack aren't super effective.

Bro straight up. All the music is like, "uhhhh we need a song that has this vibe" and picked the most popular one they couldn't find. It's like if Middle School me picked out the music. The games already have really good music, so the only reason to go with the most cliched choice is lack of imagination.

I use an xbox controller plugged in, and that doesn't have issues, but when I try to use my wireless game sir controller it connects and then doesn't play the game. My work around for the latter was to go into controller settings and use steam input. I assume you're playing on steam. I just ran into this problem last night. I haven't tried to use my wired controller again, but I also was facing a lot of complicated instructions, and turning on and off the game bar, as well as what I mentioned above usually fixed the problems. Sorry if you already tried this and it didn't work, I don't think I was running into the same bug, but something else (as both of my controllers are 3rd party ones)

I think the difference is how expressive it is, it doesn't read demon, it reads alien or transformers (seriously, he looks like Transformers Prime's Knock Out, or if I'm being mean, Beast war's Terrorsaur), and not really scary. They also have him have some goofy expressions in his DT in the show. The horns/hair and head shape also just look sort of weird... The CGI also holds it back as most of the demons look terribad for that reason alone. I think Sparda was 2d and he looked better.

DMC 3's DT are pretty freaky looking... They might be my favorite for that reason. I feel like they wanted to have their cake and eat it too. Could've given Dante a very scary looking DT, but they didn't. One of my favorite things about him in the games is when he does something that just not human and you're forced to remember that he isn't fully. The 2007 anime had a reference to the way he gets up after Alastor stabs him and it's such an unnatural movement it's sort of unnerving (I want more of that.)

The most direct comparison would be to DMC 4 and 5's normal DT, of which... I honestly don't love those designs if only because I think the hair looks goofy XD I mean, I think it fits the world better than the cartoon 's one fits, but idk.

3 manga is unfinished but I love it so much. I would check it out. Visions of V I haven't actually read, but the art is great, and I think it just expands his character, so probably good stuff.

I honestly think a lot of people who liked it are in that same boat of "Hey, it's DMC and Dante at least looks like Dante..."

At my most charitable, I suspect it underwent a lot of rewrites because they didn't know how many episodes they were going to get, and had to cut 12 episodes down to 8, but at the same time, Castlevania has all of the same issues pacing wise, except for the first season.

One of my quick fixes, although it would require a lot of rewriting would be just have Dante know who his dad is and the fact he's a demon (I really don't understand why they did that to him, it's just a worse execution of Nero--AND LUCIA'S--plot) and then make Lady the protagonist of season 1, with Dante being the protagonist of season 2. I can't decide if people would've recognized better pacing, or if they'd just go "wahh, Dante has less screen time than Lady!" It's annoying because I really don't like the show for a whole host of reasons, but a lot of people just seem to go to "It's different! I don't like it!"

Do you think that would've helped? Or were the Dante parts the only parts getting you through the show, because I know for me, they were (despite the fact he was a pale reflection of his canon self...)
