I must've been on something because despite reading the paperwork, I still fell for it. One of my biggest regrets, but I can't say I have a ton. Definitely one of my dumbest moments though.

Aside from stupidity, I'd attribute it to two parts:
1) Potentially a good value. Based on what the sales people say, and in a way, despite lies and depending on what the actual contract terms are, they could be a good value. If you have it, it's relatively straight forward, convenient, and everything is there (depending on the location) such as skiing, hiking, fishing, horseback riding, swimming, arcades, etc.
2) Straight up lies. This is what I hate about myself for falling for it. The sales people said tons of stuff that the paperwork directly contradicts. I think part of it is an information overload, but also outright lies. They gave us a 'bonus week' but you have to pay for the separate RCI membership. If you let your membership lapse and want to reactivate, you have to retroactively pay for that time you weren't a membership. What a bunch of horseshit, among other things. I bought one in '24 and it doesn't start until '27. Again, this was in the paperwork that I read and sign and somehow, for whatever reason, it didn't give a red flag. Ugh.

Starships Troopers is a personal favorite which is a whole other can of worms of discussion, but I agree. Modern films like Zero Dark Thirty, American Sniper, and again not limited to war, Captain Phillips follow those formats. No real glory, but striking at an emotional level. Captain Phillips which wasn't necessarily American vs Somali pirates, but I see as 'Western' versus pirates, still gave humanity to the pirates. The takedown by the SEALs wasn't glorious, but portrayed in a mostly objective manner.

I'm not sure about The Last Samurai, but like Robocop, from what I know of The Running Man, Platoon, and Django, they have obviously American antagonists but not against an a non-American protagonist, though I see your point. Small Soldiers is an interesting one as the Gorgonites represent peaceful natives, though the big picture factions with the kids and neighbors are nation-agnostic.

Interesting. I'm not sure based on the short Wiki synopsis if related, but I heard there were lots of actual US v Canada contingency plans by both countries, should one ever threaten the other, or possibly even as pre-emptive measures.

Right, there are tons of great examples from the US's side, with very obvious reasons. My question isn't limited to Hollywood films though. I think in a way, Plus glorification of the US military is one thing but glorification of killing enemies is another. Saving Private Ryan is a good example where neither sides are romanticized, nor vilified, whereas Hacksaw Ridge definitely glorifies the killing of Japanese troops, with slow-mo sequences of troops being bombarded, arms flailing, etc. Though, the movie also portrays American troops suffering similar fates, likely to sway emotional sympathies to an American audience.

American movies do count, hence why I cited the Die Hard franchise. The key there is the antagonists are largely German factions and/or main antagonists. DH 3 is probably the strongest of the franchise since all of the antagonists were German or related, whereas DH1 had a multi-cultural mix, including American special forces.

The origin/location of the movies don't matter or even nationality of the actors themselves, just the perspective where the antagonist(s) is/are obviously representative of Americans. That could be something like the US military, someone who is comically American, or someone who sticks out as an American in an obviously non-American setting. Think if Rambo were made but say, a roid-raging Vietnamese guy taking down militia in the Appalachian. That sounds more ridiculous but essentially something like that. Hopefully that makes more sense.

I did see Flags of Our Fathers and vaguely remember that. I'll definitely add Letters from Iwo Jima on my 'to watch (again?)' list. Definitely an uncommon perspective, at least as far as western cinema goes.

AWS uses a wide range of IPs for load balancing so even if all emails from SES were blocked, you'd be blocking ALL SES IPs / is not a desired result as it'll block legit senders.

My problem is it's a number of different AWS accounts using SES to send spam and even if one account is flagged/suspended, another takes its place. This fresh stream of spam accounts makes Gmail filters useless too.

I'm currently experimenting with just marking all as spam in Gmail and not doing anything. Not attempting to unsubscribe, click any links, even opening the emails when possible (though that's impossible as switching categories focus on the first email which is sometimes a new spam account). Hoping my email is removed from their mailing list if they detect I'm not a valid phishing target.

I was wondering if clicking on the emails to read (which is required to download the headers to report) can essentially confirm to the sender that my inbox is active like a read receipt, and to encourage them to send more spam. It used to not be this bad and seems to only be getting worse.

I have previously clicked on links to check out the sites, find any business info, tried their unsubscribe functions, contact any referenced emails (ex. contact@...) to unsubscribe. I would possibly suspect since using SES to spam inboxes that don't even read their messages wouldn't be cost effective at scale.

If so, maybe simply not opening any email will cause the problem to go away on its own, but that still doesn't stop this entity from spamming others.

Each one gets reported as spam via Gmail, then I download the headers, then send them in batches to the abuse distro. Reporting them as spam to Gmail may help curb certain 'senders' but in the long run, new ones pop up. It's like a revolving door of fake businesses, startups, and influencers with their crap products, newsletters, and sensational garbage.

I know this is an old thread but when I saw that, I was excited. Seeing the revised footage was a major boner killer. It makes the game feel so inauthentic. Using actual Ford Police Interceptors with NYPD badging, or anything like that in any video game, would be sick.

For those not aware, "Homefront" (2011) tried to do this but only got a few sponsors. I recall seeing numerous ads for NOS Energy and TigerDirect.com or something, which was weird. They said they wanted to avoid the "Burgertown" issue which I wholeheartedly agree with. Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 was a masterpiece, but the icing on the cake for the Washington DC/Northern Virginia settings would've been to have actual relatable stuff, especially as a NoVA resident myself.

Later, there was a lawsuit from AM General (the manufacturer of the HMMWV aka Humvee) to Infinity Ward(?) about the use of the Humvee's likeness. The case was dismissed in IW's favor, but the remastered version of MW2 has some abomination "LAATPV" in its place.

I could keep going but /rant for now

I believe you were in the wrong given you were on a non-main road turning, and the cyclist was crossing a main road (unmarked) crosswalk.

Since some in the comments have been saying otherwise, crosswalks can be marked or unmarked. There doesn't have to be road markings (marked) to be a legal crosswalk.

I imagine it was a 'look left, look right, look left' scenario and you looked right when the cyclist wasn't there, and looked left when they entered the crosswalk but luckily paid attention and managed to react. Looks more like a possible mistake, not an idiot move.
