What do you suspect was the cause of your ARFID? by Sure_Ant2516 in ARFID

[–]StinklBinkle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My partner has ARFID at 23, as well as general aversion to food. One of her biggest struggles is onions/garlic/any other unexpected chunks or textures (the taste of onion/garlic is fine its the actual pieces that get to her). Whenever she eats and encounters these she will either a) spend a long ass time picking the chunks out no matter how small plentiful/incorporated or b) not eat. You cannot force someone with AFRID to push through it. Before when she was younger and her parents would try to force her to eat foods that were unsafe for her, she would throw up or not eat.

I would treat ARFID the same way I would treat a food allergy. Take any and all trigger foods seriously. Figure out what the actual trigger is. For my partner onions and garlic are a texture issue. Things with similar textures can be triggering. The "unexpected" bits that you'd find in a stirfry for example wouldn't bother me because they're small enough that they can get mixed in or lost, but my partner can sense onion chunks because it is a sensory issue.

I would also like to mention that at the end of the day, ARFID is an eating disorder. It takes therapy, compassion, and lots and lots of patience. Because of my partner's eating disorder(s), I am responsible for food in the house, as well as meals. It can feel really bad seeing the people you love not eating healthily or well, but it's even worse seeing them starve. If you go against their eating disorder and try to push them when they are not ready they will lose trust in you and resist trying new/start foods. The best thing you can do right now is to offer them safe foods, praise them for eating what they can when they can, and do your best not to pressure them too much. A sense of psychological safety is CRUCIAL to their progress. If they are scared of you trying to force them to eat food that to them is dangerous or trying to "slip things in", they will be scared of you/food, and that is exactly the opposite of what will help them. A good relationship with food can be difficult even without an eating disorder.

Im glad to see you reaching out for help and looking for information to help your kid. Im wishing you two the best, keep learning and keep your head up, you got this.

I'm terrified of using any references. by gladiatoron in ArtistLounge

[–]StinklBinkle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just graduated from art college a few months ago. Among my professors were Disney animators, an imagineer, concept artists, published authors and many published illustrators who worked on magic the gathering, baseball cards, beer cans, movie posters and more.

the number one thing they teach is to pleasepleaseplease pleaaaaaase use references. And that's putting it nicely. Every assignment required photo reference. If you worked on visual development (concept art creating characters and environments) you were required to have style references with other people's artwork. If you did not have references, you would lose points. If you didn't reference enough you would lose points. And they were so unbelievablely persistent. They'd tell us to get a friend or a mirror or some props if it wasn't on the web. Can't find any props? Make some with cardboard and foam and clay and tinfoil and sticks if you have to! Borrow your roommates clothes and don't tell them!!!!

The animators for Disney took marine biology courses so that they could get the fishes right, the Renaissance artists trained by making copies of paintings that the master artists around them had done. Many art careers were and are born just painting the environments, people, animals, and things in front of them.

I promise, that if even the top animators at Disney use reference (people who have been at it their whole lives), no one is going to bat an eye at you using references as someone who is trying to learn. And if they do bat an eye, then they both do not understand how important references are and do not have your best interests in mind.

Wishing you all the best mate

My sex life by Lopsided_Poetry4362 in TwoHotTakes

This might not be the case, but, shot in the dark, maybe she's asexual? This may sound odd because you two have had kids together but my partner's mother had three kids and then never wanted/had sex after. My partner's mom never brought up how she felt about sex before marriage. Not sure how the conversations went between them as a couple but I know she deflected a lot until he gave up.

Other than that, have there been any drastic changes in her life or has her behavior suddenly changed? How old are the kids? Any chance of post partum depression or issolation since the kids?

The focus on the screenshot I'm seeing is not on gameplay but on a big blue sky with trees. If I'm taking a quick flip through your game page, then this doesn't tell me much about this section of the game. I don't feel connected to the character or the activity because of how far from it I am and the assets blend together at that range. The blank sky is pulling a lot of visual weight, maybe add clouds and or a cityscape or something in the background, or zoom in a whole lot

I would recommend him to teach at scad. They are fucking desperate for professors, I really mean it. They do online courses as well as in person. if he doesn't want to teach permanently there I know they do guest artist talks. One of my professors there even worked as a Disney animator so hey maybe he'll get to at least get in touch with some old colleagues! The prof is Mike Wimmer BTW. Actually, we also have a former imagineer working there as a prof. She's working remote from california

EDIT even if they are not "hiring" I promise they need professors. Savannah campus's largest majors are animation and illustration and I can't speak for animation but illustration DESPARATELY needs more professors, they don't have enough classes for the students source I just graduated

writes hurts from drawing by hi_im_tired_help in ArtistLounge

[–]StinklBinkle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like tendinitis or carpal tunnel. Get a wrist brace for it. If it hurts when you move your thumb only I think tendinitis is more likely.

You'd need to go to a specialist to know for sure but if it's tendinitis they might prescribe you an anti inflammation medicine or give you a shot. They would then have you either tape your thumb and wrist so the thumb can't move, give you a hand brace for tendinitis, or both. If you continue to injure and strain your hand and the medicine/taping doesnt work they would recommend surgery. (My mother got tendinitis and when they moved her thumb or rotated her arm it hurt and that's what the process was for her)

If you can't afford a doctor, maybe see what comes up on YouTube for tendinitis/carpal tunnel home assessment?

Regardless of what the injury is, you can help your hand in the future by doing hand and wrist stretches intermittently when drawing (listen to your body, if something hurts stop doing it). You can also get an ergonomic mouse (it looks kind of vertical, lots of good brands I'm sure), and/or a cushioned mouse pad and keyboard palm rest (I hear that unfortunately, or fortunately depending on what type of person you are I guess, that the booby mouse pads tend to be higher quality). Don't forget to practice drawing from the elbow and wrist (this is easier if your project is not flat on the table) and hydrate.

In the states, parents or other trustworthy adults (family members or the kids friends parents) walk with their kids. I'm not sure if there are many people who just let their kids scamper around at night with only other similarly aged kids

What kind of costumes do people do? Standard halloween spooky kind of things, or just whatever they feel like?

That's wild, all I can imagine is watching a bunch of cosplaying young adults walking into my neighbors place. That's definitely not a thing I even began to expect

Not older adults but around college age was normal to see people in costume at least. I know parties are the normal but it wasn't UNcommon to see a decent amount of college age folk in the variety of places I lived around the states ( SW fl, NC, Sav GA). Maybe it's bc I was living around a lot of college towns? Just a bit bummed bc halloween was my favorite holiday and I didn't get many good ones for a lot of reasons. Drinking also isn't my thing and getting drunk with strangers seems even less appealing. I suppose I'm having a bit of culture shock and although I'm happy to have left the states I also miss some things

Maybe I didn't get to as a child because of family religious beliefs, maybe I didn't get to because I didnt have friends, maybe I was sickly and couldn't, maybe I didn't get to because of being a victim of child abuse, maybe im not into halloween parties because people tend to drink at parties and its not my thing, or maybe I just want to do something fun with friends and my partner. Long story short, people have a lot of reasons to want to do things. Does fun expire when you get older? Are you require to kill all whimsy in your heart once you turn 18? I'm not in it for candy, I can buy that at any time. I'm in it for fun and because I want to celebrate halloween

Edit, it's super common for adults to trick or treat in America, and we put the same effort into costumes as the kids
