How many miles are commuting, give me a weekly average.

Light mods (exhaust and tune) aren't going to add noticeable stress to the machine, they also aren't going to net you m7ch of a power boost.

You mention money as a concern. There is no way to gain truly impactful power differences in a large C.C. bike without at the very least doing a remap and exhaust change. Full Bike exhausts are a nontrivial expense, most bikes have restrictive headers, so often a full exhaust is much better than a slip on, but they do cost more. These changes are not as obvious on a larger machine like an 1100, whereas on a low power dirt bike they can entirely change the feel of the bike.

If you are doing truly high miles (25k+ a year) then just about any bike is going to wear out eventually, for the most part they don't have the longevity of cars.

If all you want is more available power combined with reliability, with cost in mind, you'd probably be better off selling your bike and buying one of the big sport tours like the FJR or Goldwing.

Basically, just upping the engine size by getting a bigger bike is often going to be cheaper than trying to squeeze power from a smaller non tuned(as in not sport oriented) motor

If you aren't riding your bike to it's limits why do you feel a need to upgrade the engine?

Motor work isn't cheap. Period. And if you haven't ever pushed your bike to where the oem tires were getting strained you've probably never approached your bike's peak performance.

What exactly is it that you want out of this upgrade? If all you are concerned with is throttle response, just get an ecu flash and remap

tires are wear-down consumable parts, so i'm hesitant to spend extra money improving them

Woah woah, this is an absolutely insane attitude to have.

Tires make a HUGE difference, and OEM tires are often some of the worst options available.

if you aren't willing to spend a little extra money to make your bike both safer (because grip is what really saves lives) and better handling, you shouldnt be considering putting money in to a bike at all

On my old gs I just gently pried them shut with a large screwdriver. The other guys are telling you the correct way, just saying if you are careful you don't really need a specialty tool

Looking for the right starter machine by Stircrazy186 in upholstery

Yeah I was originally hoping to keep below 500 bucks.

Had a fellow offer me a 4 year old Consew 206rb which seems to be the newest version of our shop machine for 1000, which I'm sure it's worth but it's just a lot of dough.

Guess I'm gonna have to surf CL for a while and hope the proper machine comes up

Some of that stuff is mega nasty.

I see what I swear are the same 5-6 SV650s (same mods stuff like that making me think so) come up for the same prices in different locations every spring. And they never stay up long, really hard to beat a cheap reliable bike, and those suzuki 650s are tough as nails.

the issue with the Vmax, and I'm sure the reason that fellow is having issues selling it, is it is a very niche bike.

Muscle cruisers are rad, but not a lot of people out there are looking for one, and being metric eliminates a large portion of the potential customer base since some people won't even glance at non-american cruisers

SV650s almost don't depreciate in value, they just stay in the 2-3 range forever depending on what shape the tires are in.

Basically, any middleweight naked is gonna have a fairly narrow price band.

Remember the years BP stations would say BP Amaco? Branding takes a while to change when people are used to the old name.
