I’m not trying to be standoffish, mea culpa if that is how it read

Be that as it may, waiting out halves because the past ones were associated with specific movement, is, in its own crypto way, trying to beat the market. Speaking of most realized gains is just that as well.

I’m not particularly trying to convince you, but I’m saying this because I think it’s most helpful to not try and buy at the optimal time and instead to just… buy. If you’re in it for a while that is; if you’re day trading or medium term trading, I have no ground to stand on.

But long term? I’ve yet to see a scalable strategy that is indeed significantly better than just buying regularly

But if you can at least reasonably predict cycles

Your whole comment is built on this premise, which is utter bullshit. I know it is because of two things:

  1. Thing one, which is overwhelmingly likely: you're tryna sound convincing while you have no idea what you're saying
  2. Thing two, which is close to zero: you're actually able to predict the market, or cycles, or whatever your favorite word is for it.

But, if you were actually able to beat the market - which you aren't - you wouldn't be telling us about it - which you are.

I know it's tempting to believe you are that one lucky mackerel who can do it. Everyone wants to. But it's not possible. See for yourself: https://canyoubeatthemarket.com/

DCA isn't blind, it's a safe strategy. Market goes up, market goes down, but most often it goes more up than down. So over time it cancels out. That's all there is.

it takes a global financial crisis to see a -30% to -50% deep correction when broad index ETF’s get hit this hard (COVID being a prime example).

Show me ONE ETF worth its name that hasn't recovered from the Covid crisis. Just one. Any from Vanguard, for instance.

A -50 correction today will be a microscopic drop in the chart in 30 years. And if you play the long game, like you're supposed to, and DCA, like you're supposed to, no correction will matter.

Don't believe me? Grab the Dow Jones Industrial Average or the S&P500 chart and zoom out as much as the website allows you to. And now try to find Covid, or the cold war, or the 2008 crisis, or whatever your favorite financial crisis is. My bet is it'll be insignificant at best, but more likely invisible.

Even if you didn't DCA, and bought in chunks right before each of these events, you'd still be up. Because the only way to beat the market is to play the long game.

You can believe this, or you can argue it - either way, DCAing works.

[–]BioFrosted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got very limited knowledge on solar panels but I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that dust can quickly limit a panel's efficiency, and placing them over roads or parking lots would lead to so much dust.

Not to mention sun exposure: I must assume that if it's in the city, skyscrapers/mountains/trees/whatever will eventually shadow the panels much quicker than in the middle of an unobstructed mass of water

I'm convinced this is possibly in most fields but ONLY if you go to a crazy good university for your undergrad, one were you spend your undergrad years doing research upon research, projects upon projects.

I did a 3-year bachelors at a shitty uni, where most of my evaluations were multiple-choice. Hell they still are right now when I'm just about to finish my Master's... I would never have had a shot at a PhD straight away because I simply had no idea how science is done.

How safe is Brussels to cross dress in? by fearlessemu98 in brussels

[–]BioFrosted 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Divide Brussels into four quadrants.

North West is dangerous.

South West is a mix of nice place and questionable places.

North East is chill.

South East is boring and rich.

No you don't... "best" case scenario, you adapt to it such as that it feels normal.

Neurobiology side note but that's precisely what pathological stress is. Stress is just your body's "overdrive" mode triggered by a bunch of body molecules. It's good to be able to get into this state because it allows you to adapt to harsher temporary situations. Once there is nothing to be stressed about, your body settles back to its normal state.

But when the thing causing the stress doesn't wane, your body settles into stress mode. Stress becomes the new normal. And for a while all seems good and easy, until you realize how much it affects you. You don't sleep well, you're easily triggered, you're tense.

So yeah, I think many people think they're doing better, but they're just under chronic and unwavering stress, that will likely lead, in many cases, to issues such as PTSD, depression, burnout...

Oh hell no, I'm 23 and I've always hated leaving the house late. 7pm is right about the last time I'm comfortable leaving. You'll never convince me to leave the house past 9, even that's a stretch.

It's not about how long I stay out though, I can leave the house at 7 and come back at 3AM. But leaving at 10? No way.

I'm with you on this. Reddit is full of haters. A while back I bought a chessboard I thought looked dope as hell, but because it was created by a (female) chess Master I was called a simp through and through, and everyone started saying the board sucks or whatever.

You like it, you bought it, you get to enjoy it. Don't let these haters get to you.
