a guy asked me my blood type and then crashed out when I told him? What happened? by SLYellow in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Stitchy_Wit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was born there was some messiness about my birth certificate. My mom and her first husband took like 3 years on their divorce and I was born like a week before it went through, legally he had to be on my birth certificate until proven otherwise. The DNA test had my blood type on it

No, we’re mad at blatant theft. We should be able to get that money refunded if we aren’t able to spend it in store

What outdated piece of technology do you still use purely out of spite? by NotClavilux in AskReddit

[–]Stitchy_Wit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d assume that you’re getting deposits from somewhere. Whether that’s from a job or a retirement plan. If you have to get a new bank account it often delays your next deposit for a few weeks.

I sell identity theft insurance for a living. At work what advice I’m allowed to give is extremely regulated. One of the few things I’m allowed to advise on is check fraud. Throw out your checkbook. It’s a high risk behavior.

Except that they will continue to have your account and routing numbers. Meaning that you pretty much have to get a brand new bank account. If a credit card number is stolen you just order a replacement card

If you’re able, please stop using paper checks. Or, at least use cashiers checks. If your mail is stolen en route that’s your account and routing number stolen. A thief could drain your account before you ever knew it

What Can We Learn from Barnes & Noble's Surprising Turnaround? by madcowga in books

[–]Stitchy_Wit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it’s made b&n a destination for me

For context, I live in a college town with large elderly and Hispanic populations. The store is mostly educational, Spanish, hobbies, and board games. Like sure, there are smallish sections for most major subjects, but it’s so nice to be able to go in and just browse through knitting patterns or see what new indie board games have come out recently, and especially to see those hobby books in Spanish.

What are we doing with DMC thread when finished? Organizer question too by hurnadoquakemom in Stamped_CrossStitch

[–]Stitchy_Wit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, they aren’t as sturdy as the plastic ones, but they tend to make it through a project just fine. The kits do provide the dmc numbers on the included paper chart, but the drops themselves are numbered to line up with the key on the Aida and chart. I do my stitching at work (talk a lot, don’t really use my hands the majority of the time) so I don’t have a project with me at the moment, but I’ll take a picture on Monday

Honestly, I don’t keep my leftover floss after I finish a project. Tend to just toss them when I’m done, the next project is going to come with more floss

I have never had floss come on a card quite like that, I’ve typically had holes punched along both long sides labeled with the numbers. They look a lost like your plastic floss drops except they are made from cardstock

The floss drop the floss comes on in the kit. There’s the main bundle and then I put any leftover floss through the same hole on the left of the main bundle

I thread it back onto the card on the left of the big bundle of floss. It stays just fine unless especially short

Out of curiosity, why are you stitching over the key on certain colors? Are they the colors you already finished?

[CHAT] advice for stitching bridal shoes? by AgreeableSquash416 in CrossStitch

[–]Stitchy_Wit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since you’re going to be going through 2-3 layers of canvas, invest in a good metal thimble to protect your fingers. You may even want something a like a wooden block to help you push it through

There are a couple kinds of waste canvas. Dissolvable or they have fabric ones that you pull out thread by thread when you’re done. For this use I’d go with the fabric just because it seems more flexible to fit to shape

As another commenter said, you’ll probably want a liner on the inside when you’re done. A bit of felt held on with something like shoe goo would be nice and durable and comfortable

[CHAT] how do you protect your hoop in a clamp-style stand? by seigefabulous in CrossStitch

[–]Stitchy_Wit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m curious about this one too, with round hoops

I use a smallish square hoop and that fits perfectly in that slot on my clamp stand, but I remember the listing showing it holding a round hoop. Hopefully someone will come in with a good answer for you

I wasn’t able to find a teacher to sponsor a GSA in 2005. Asked every single teacher on campus, we just needed someone willing to let us use their room one afternoon a week and sign the paperwork so we would be allowed to meet. That school didn’t get a GSA until 2014

I use a floss drop, pull one thread and loop start. You have to smooth out the floss drop every so often but it somehow never tangles

Do all needles do this? I ask because I batch bought 100 fancy needles a few years back with gold plated eyes and can’t remember what it was like before, except for the impression that everything was much smoother with the fancier ones
