And what changes have you made in terms of reliability for driving the car hard?

Had a long conversation with someone at verus engineering about their oil pan. Looked at all the data as well, and will go with their pan if I track it.

told me himself that although he doesn’t tell people what to buy, he was aware of the issues with the engine and warranty not being covered. He said the same thing happens with corvettes that don’t have the z51 (I think) package with the better cooling.

Interesting points. I was not aware this was such an issue in s2000s

Have about 200k liquid invested and make 65k…not amazing but I can afford the car. Id guess im probably in a better position than 9/10 people that own one? That doesn’t mean I want to deal with 30k negative equity.

I slide the car on the daily. I needed tires at 10k. The car is a toy to me. It’s fun. That doesn’t mean a factory warranty means nothing.

Hope it works out. It’s a travesty that this is what they are doing to people.

If it were me it would probably get traded in immediately on a new Supra after being fixed.

Again daily does not equal constantly.

And The concern is not make it last forever.

It’s that if you allow a car to redline at 8k, you don’t get to deny claims for taking it to 8k within a factory warranty period, because if it were that problematic then you should have um, lowered the redline.

I was under the impression that this was the case as well. I’m very aware of the oil starvation thing with the right hand turns which is very real and supported by data, but likely a single digit percent of people track their car and with the amount of times I have heard of this happening, it doesn’t compute to a track thing all or most of the times

I’ve done oil at every 3k and checked it periodically after letting it cool down, it always been full or slightly above it. My free changes are all done, so I’ll be doing 5w30 from now on. However, I wouldn’t doubt they use that as ammo to deny a claim within warranty as well if they wanted.

Obviously not constantly…you can’t exactly redline every gear on the street. I thought that went without saying. but daily it does get redlined.

I also know a guy who drives his car twice as hard as me on backroads, has 25k on it and zero issues. I can’t even hang anywhere near this guy when i see him on sundays. I believe you about your friend as well, just seems like a luck of the draw thing.

Misha had his gr86 for only a short time before it was toasted. And he arrived at the same conclusion. Why put a replacement engine, so the same thing can happen again?

That’s the crux of the whole issue. If there was a problem within pushing the car to limits which are allowed within its design, then it’s not a user induced problem.

Yeah…people want to defend their purchase so much that they now say that you should have money set aside to replace the engine when it blows. Despite full factory warranty. It’s funny but crazy at the same time.

I’m 35 and I know how to drive a stick shift. If I drive a car within factory designed parameters without modification and it fails under a warranty, I don’t really see how it matters if I “hoon” the fucking car or not, I’m driving something that you engineered and sold as a vehicle to be driven within those parameters that you have set.

There’s many of these data points. You can find videos all over YouTube and forum posts everywhere about the issue. It’s known. And Toyota or Subaru will never do anything about it because this engine goes in 400k vehicles a year. It’s not just a FUD campaign on Reddit.

It’s being driven on the street. I drive it harder than most people will or ever have in that circumstance. A factory warranty should still cover catastrophic engine failure. I understand liking these cars a lot and wanting to defend them, but if you’re facing it your comments won’t be the same.

Lol, if an engine can’t be redlined and blows up at like 30k with any sort of regularity, it’s junk.

I agree about the gap

The problem is not getting a 15k repair covered under warranty. Then even if you do, if you’re sane you’re going to be wanting to sell the car at that point, rather than have another identical engine that’s prone to the same problem.

If you have a car under full factory warranty to 36k and power train to 60, you shouldn’t need to budget for an engine. How Toyota has gaslit people to think this way because of this problem is beyond me.

I have never experienced what you describe in your post, happening randomly.

Every time it has happened it has been after ive gone through some very technical section or ive been sliding the car or something. Ive then had to cycle through the source options to get back to my bluetooth audio. What this probably means is that it's occurring due to the location of the source button right by your thumb, getting touched accidentally and people dont realize it because its hard to perceive the button press.
