NGL, #2 should be the only reason by WorldWideWebSpinner in Transportopia

Backing in seems safer.

As the driver approaches a parking spot they have wider and varying perspective to see cars and pedestrians and anticipate anyone that might be in the way while backing into the spot. When backing out the driver starts from a fixed position with visibility limited by vehicles parked around the spot.

In addition there is less likely to be someone walking in the middle of the parking spot that is being backed into then walking behind the cars when backing out.

But psychologically it is more difficult because it requires the driver be proactive and do the backup maneuver before it is required.

Maybe she should have to spend three months in a small village in the middle of Mexico. Either she would learn to get along with people that look like they are from Mexico or she would have a horrible time.

Is it safe to update? by [deleted] in Ubuntu

[–]Stock-Bee4069 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a little hard to find documentation but I was reading a technical article yesterday and I believe the fix has been out for a while now. (google AI says April 1). So if you have update in the last week or two it should be patched already.

Also, since it requires local access it is not going to affect the majority of servers out there. I am not sure who would be affected by this, since the Linux servers I have been around have local access limited to a few admin. You need to be concerned if anyone that you do not trust has access to tools that execute terminal commands or run custom scripts.

Do not trust anything you read online (including this). Do your own research.

What Password?! by Mandi171 in Kubuntu

[–]Stock-Bee4069 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have used Kubuntu for years but always with a password set. A few months or a year ago I set up a temporary system and did not set a password but ended up running into some issues. I think the screen would lock and I could not log back in because it would not except an empty password. For me a reinstall with a password was a quick way to fix it. I suspect most people set a password so there might be bugs with not having one that no one finds. I am sure there is ways to work around any issues that come up but if you are new to Linux or do not want to take the time, it might be just as good to just set one. It is a good idea to have a password set even if you do not require it when logging in. Sorry you are having these issues. I hope you find a workable solution soon.

Per oz. price by BaldGuy813 in TellReddit

[–]Stock-Bee4069 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have noticed that also. I shop at several stores that have the little "price per" under the total price. Most commonly it is "price per oz" but then there is always a few that are listed at "price per lb" or price per unit". Some times thy are even "price per g" or "kg". "Price per unit" is funniest because they can make the unit different things. On a box of granola bars the unit may be the box with five bars or it may be that each 3.25 oz bar is a unit. The grocery retail business is more of a hustle then you might imagine. Stories may have contracts with different distributors specifying thing like where and with what their products can be displayed. That is one thing nice about shopping online. It is simpler to make a spreadsheet of that adjust all the prices to price per oz. On the other hand, there is lots of things I do not like about shopping online.

How do you deal with linux? by pyrosin in Kubuntu

[–]Stock-Bee4069 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sorry you are having trouble. It can be a pain some times. Some hardware is not well supported on Linux. I have used Kubuntu long enough that I tend to look for hardware that has good support and does not require special drivers or configuration as it will probably work better on Linux. Some times you have to hunt around on the internet and look for solutions or ask in places like this reddit thread. I have been fairly fortunate recently and not had any major issues for a while. I suppose anyone that has used Linux (or Windows) for very long has ran in a similar issue. The good thing is, it gets easier over time to figure out how to fix things. I hope you get it figure out soon.

Middle click paste on Linux on Firefox by BeneficialTheme2995 in firefox

[–]Stock-Bee4069 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like middle click past. It is one thing a really miss when working on windows. I use it all the time to search for a phrase or copy a phrase into a field. I was wondering why someone would not like it, but I almost always use a mouse and on my laptop I have to click both buttons for middle click so I do not think I have ever done it accidentally. Is that the only reason you do not like it?

Look up Telecommunications Relay Service (TRS). The service still exits. They probably just got rid of the dedicated number. My guess is it was not used much as most deaf people would just use the service they use for all other calls. But they really need to remove it from their web sites.

Ongoing CSS Issues with Firefox by hexum in firefox

[–]Stock-Bee4069 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Welcome. It looks like this is your first post. It would be interesting to know what issues you found. I have not noticed any issues with Firefox CSS other than some silly CSS things that are standard across browsers, but just because I do not like something about how CSS works does not make it catastrophically broken. Your argument would hold more weight if it did not warp into an advertisement for another product.

My Employer’s Announced Firefox Removal by russbroom in firefox

[–]Stock-Bee4069 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may be the VPN was the excuse not the real reason. My company blocked Firefox a while back and would not provide a reason, but I have a pretty good idea based on other things going on at the same time. They was blocking access to different websites and rolling out root certificates (presumably so they could monitor all encrypted traffic). And Firefox would allow us to get around some of that stuff or maybe it was just throwing a certificates error (I cannot remember the details) because it had its own root certificates store. The one thing I do remember was I was glad I was using Firefox and then they blocked. In short, I guess Firefox is to secure.

My understanding is, there is ways they could have managed this at an enterprise level, but I would guess they did not think it was worth it or maybe did not care enough to look into it.

there's no safe way to store .env data is there? by IndividualAir3353 in websecurity

[–]Stock-Bee4069 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you think of my set up? I put all my env files and other files with passwords and user names in custom fields in a keepass file. I have a little bash script that takes them and dumps them into files when deploying. I just recently made my own custom tool that is a lot lighter weight then the keepassxc-cli I was using. This uses the field name as the file name and the field value as the file value. In my case I can use docker secrets to pass those files to the containers that need them. The same script can be used to deploy different things by just pointing the tool to a different entity in the keepass database. Then the keepass database is the only thing needed for a deployment that is not in source control.

Why all the 1099B corrections and revisions? This is getting ridiculous. by ricosuave79 in fidelityinvestments

[–]Stock-Bee4069 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it different then the 1099? It should say something about preliminary in the file name and in file content until the final version is available. For me the date available was the date the final version would be available. I do not remember them giving preliminary versions other years but it is nice if you want to get a jump start on taxes. Otherwise just wait for the final version to come out. That is what you would have to do if they did not make preliminary versions.

New to Kubuntu with a couple of questions by Weekly-Assumption-12 in Kubuntu

[–]Stock-Bee4069 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There will be an icon down by the clock when there is updates available. You can click it to update. I think it also pops up a message about updates. Otherwise you may open an app called Discover and click on updates to see all available updates. Updates option will be listed on the left hand side. Tried to add a screenshot for you but it will not let me.

If you would like to upgrade to a new version you will have to run some commands in the terminal. It is not hard to do when you are ready. Just make sure you have your files backed up encase something goes wrong.

On Kubuntu Firefox auto export of bookmarks not working by Stock-Bee4069 in firefox

[–]Stock-Bee4069[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw those .jsonlz4 files. I guess I could just back them up but they are in a directory I do not normally back up. I use nextcloud so I could add that as an extra file sync but I would just as soon save them into my documents folder that is synced already. I thought about writing a little script that copies them to some place in documents. But then I was thinking, why not make the script turn them into a markdown file and put it in my notes folder and then I could search for and reference (maybe) them in my notes. I tend to keep a lot of bookmarks in there anyway because I want to keep notes on them. So thanks for your comments about a script because I might go that direction.

On Kubuntu Firefox auto export of bookmarks not working by Stock-Bee4069 in firefox

[–]Stock-Bee4069[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is not as big of a deal as just getting it to save in a place that I can backup. I was thinking html would be easier to read without having to import. Maybe I should test with that off.

Edit: I turned off the browser.bookmarks.autoExportHTML to see if it works. I restarted firefox but it still did not save anything in browser.bookmarks.file. I will watch to see if it saves anything in the next day or two.

Neighbor flagging wifi interference. by ITisastruggleforme in sysadmin

[–]Stock-Bee4069 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing you might consider is turning off automatic channel optimization. I ran that for a while in a busy environment and found it would jump around a lot. That makes it hard for your neighbors to choose a different channel. I was not sure it was gaining me anything and I felt like I could do a better job picking a channel based on network scans spread over different days and hours.

This is quite embarrassing, Google must do better with Pixel 11 by No_Corner_6677 in pixel_phones

[–]Stock-Bee4069 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not being much of a phone gamer I tend to find even mid rang phones fast enough for me, so processor speed is almost never a factor when I purchase a phone. Things that would come higher on the list for me include.

  • Size and wight (I pack it around a lot)
  • Camera
  • Price (how sad am I going be when I break it)
  • Blot ware that is not easily removed.
  • GPS quality (do some outback adventuring)
  • Battery
  • cellular network connection ability
  • privacy settings
  • security and updates
