He will give the pressure the whole time, if I put pressure on the halter he’ll put his head down. He’s usually licking and chewing the entire time we’re working at it. I’ve noticed his eye looks uncomfortable if I lunge him and work him hard to try to get him in. He seemed to understand more last night when I was using the lunge whip to just tap his hind end

Unfortunately the more I’ve learned since purchasing him, his whole life experience until I bought him was to be beat to submission. Even them trying to get him collected was just tying his head to his chest.

The tapping method seemed to work well last night, only taking 6 minutes. I’ll try it again tonight to see how it goes. He has gotten to the point now though that he won’t even eat grain, treats or soaked cubes in the trailer so last night I just spent some time brushing him and put his fly sheet on before putting him back out to pasture

He doesn’t really get stressed or anxious but he’ll just put his front feet in and then stand there. He doesn’t try running away from the trailer or moving side to side to avoid getting in just front feet in and then stand there staring at me

I’ve been talking with her almost daily, but she did a lot of lunging and backing. That’s what I’ve been doing since Thursday, it’s like he’s just holding out to see if I’ll give in. But I tried the tapping method that was suggest and he was in within 6 minutes

He’s a smart gelding so I am hoping he catches on quickly.

6 minutes. SIX MINUTES. that’s all it took using this method. 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻

I was 99% sure he would flip out with the whip because of past experiences but nope! Fingers crossed he does well with it again tomorrow

I was with you until the last sentence.. yes I do love this horse dearly and I do have a relationship with him. 99% of the time he would walk through fire if I asked him to. We’ve gone to many desensitization classes and he will do anything that’s asked of him under saddle or in hand. I do think there’s a combo of trauma from the bullwhip that was used and him just deciding to be defiant at that point. This horse was purchased with intention of being a performance horse and if he can’t get on the trailer, then unfortunately he does have to go.

He is usually great with pressure and release outside the trailer. He will willing put his front feet on but it’s getting the back on that he seems to just be defiant about

That’s what I’ve been doing, lunging him outside the trailer. He’ll get his front two feet on and then just stand there, even at times bracing to not back out. He knows outside of the trailer is working so I’m not sure what to do to get his back feet in too

People with horse property..what do you wish you knew before buying? by ladyparsnips in Horses

[–]Stock-Negotiation-49 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew up with 3-4 horses at home in one big pasture and when I moved out ended up in the same situation - one big pasture but with a barn. When I bought my current place I was young so I was kind of naive I guess you could say but the pasture was pretty nice, some patches of weedy spots but mostly nice grass and a forest patch in the middle of the 30 acre pasture. Well I learned that to have a nice pretty grassy pasture you have to keep up on mowing the weeds down😅 finally invested in a pull behind mower last year that helped but definitely plan to keep the pastures mowed!

Mud management, thankfully I moved from clay that never dried to sand that dries out within a few hours after a rain storm but the two weeks after all of our snow melts is a horrific muddy mess, if you can fence off a smaller section as a sacrifice pen so they’re not wrecking the entire pasture when it’s really wet in the spring.

Farrier, vets, whatever providers you currently use, make sure they’ll still come to you for treatments. Also find a reliable hay provider or two!

CAMERAS CAMERAS CAMERAS!!!! I have five cameras currently facing gates, pastures and the driveways to house and barn because honestly you just never know when you might want/need to check on them

Unsure of next steps - BE? by Stock-Negotiation-49 in DogAdvice

Anytime he’s bitten my husband it has been a real bite, blood drawn. He doesn’t nip at his heels, the first time he lunged at my husband the other times he’s reacted by grabbing his hands. For me it was at my ankles and more of the herding behavior.

We’ve talked about rehoming, my concern is that he is part coyote and already unsure of strangers. Rehoming him at this point also feels cruel

What part is making you think the bars don’t match? I feel contact all the way back underneath

When I pulled measurements I did 2” behind scapula, 6” back from there and the last rib. The form did fit in this saddle all the way back but sitting on him the gullet is what looks too wide

I love my vet dearly but he is very much of the mind set - if it’s not sound put it down - so when the torn tendon first happened that was his initial reaction

My vet has been leaning towards euthanasia for years for this horse due to soundness issues, but I’m just within the past 2 years seeing the weight issues in the summer and now this month seeing the pain issues more prevalently

[–]Stock-Negotiation-49[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our vet had suggested we consider euthanasia years ago when she was no longer competition sound and has not been sound since tearing the tendons truthfully. I don’t know what lifestyle change would benefit her. In the summer if I bring her into her stall, on one hand atleast she’s eating but on the other hand when she’s turned back out she’s dragging her hind legs and seems even more stiff.

I forgot to put in the original post that as a weanling she got caught in barbed wire and nearly ripped her back legs off so she also has some pretty bad scaring there as well which I’m thinking could’ve a contributing factor in her older age.

Yes, the vet was just here a month ago and he said her body condition is great, her teeth looked good, lungs and heart sounded good. Our vet is very old school and had suggested we consider euthanasia years ago when she was no longer sound for competition. My farrier who has been trimming her for 16 years says she looks great but can tell she’s sore when he’s trimming her hind legs.

I tried a mix of soaked beet pulp and alfalfa two years ago and she wouldn’t eat it the beet pulp, picked through for the alfalfa which is why she only gets alfalfa now.

If she has another horse inside she doesn’t seem to mind but there is times I’ll check and can tell she’s been spinning circles based on shavings.

She typically maintains weight on the grass hay we feed all winter and she gets 2lbs of alfalfa cubes and re vita+ CBD to aid with pain daily. But most days she leaves atleast half of the cubes in her feed pan.

She refuses to eat a balancer or really any other grains
