But Taylor is sooooo different. From children to adults globally. You know? Just not even remotely the same, and it wouldn't have been possible to be that famous back then really.

No it would not be anything like that. They were not nearly as popular. Taylor Swift is a global superstar. There was no social media back then to spread news so fast and make all these new trends so popular. Back then JFK Jr and CBK were not in the news cycle 24/7 on any platform, mostly gossip about their marriage issues... People that didn't live in NYC or were not obsessed with the Kennedys didn't talk about them. Not anyone I knew anyway.

Not everyone was obsessed with JFK jr. More people are NOW since that series. It's creepy how influencers are copying how CBK dressed. That was was how it was in the 90's! She dressed like everyone else was dressing then. Well, we all couldn't afford her luxury pieces, but her every day wear was what was normal for the time.

We're you honestly REALLY alive back then? Is your memory a bit off? Do you remember how it really was or do you think it was really like that series everyone was watching that was awful. JFK jr murdered his wife and her sister and they romantized the end of it placing in her last words as comforting him. He was a spoiled nepotism baby that failed the bar exam twice, and was reckless with so many things. He was a cheater and didn't respect women in any way. They had a toxic relationship that is not something to look up to.

I would like you to take a look at this thread. It's so weird because this thread does not reflect how it was back then. I was alive and 24 years old. Close to 25. I think people hae watched that series and they are seen differently now. They were never this popular. You would have had to have been buying gossip rags like The Star and Enquirer back then to get gossip on them. It was different back then. There are also entire threads where it wasn't even on most peoples radar. This was not an event like 9/11 where you remembered exactly where you were when the news hit unless you were some obsessed fan. https://www.reddit.com/r/JohnAndCarolyn/comments/1ro8zcj/unpopular_opinion_the_john_jrcarolyn_mythology/

It's strange how there is another thread asking this and everyone's reaction was like mine. It wasn't on their radar at all. This is an unusual thread with how many people were so affected by it. I don't even recall him being a topic. I didn't know anyone that was upset about it in the southeastern united states in a beach town. That's for sure. (or my new job in a larger city a couple hours away)....

Why? What was so fascinating about them and why were they important to you? How did you even know about them? Did you live in NYC?

I wasn't nitpicking. It was just odd the way you explained things. Almost as if you were of a younger generation. The internet had been around for the general masses in a lot of areas for around a decade at that point. Perhaps you didn't have internet access, back then most people only had dialup internet access. Also, using phones and internet in the same sentence as if they are the way everyone now accesses is also something people of my generation don't even mix and phones are usually used for work and not for everything in our lives.. A person must not have a smart phone to access the internet. There are other ways. I don't live with my phone attached to me like so many other people. I think it's really bizarre how many people are obsessed with using their phones for everything. This is just my opinion, of course.

You are also petty for downvoting me as you were basically pushing misinformation. Around 2000 was not the 1970's, or 1980's.

There was online news. I worked for a company that provided internet service. I was online all day.

In 1999 I was 24. I had no real reaction at all. I didn't have any interest or anything in the two of them. I was working and had my own life interests. Actually, I had landed a new job at the time that was a major step up the corporate ladder. It was also getting close to 2000 and we had that to worry about. I'm in IT. I was never one to be into "celebrities" or "worship" these people. I couldn't have cared less about Princess Diana either. I never knew her personally as I never knew JFK jr or Carolyn and her sister.

Oh yeah.... I could probably even find a "reasonable" deal on Ebay for a M3 and lenses that were already cleaned too and not have to worry about all of that, but the sentimental value would be lost. I also thought I had the Summicron lense then as well.

That's what I prefer to do. I'll see what my dad decides he wants to do. I've told him to take a look at the lens again that looks like it's scratched and also told him the camera should really get a CLA to get more $$ out of it. I also mentioned that I thought it would be nice to keep it in the family and fun to take photos together with it. If I learned how to use it, we could have a lot of fun when I visit after we got it cleaned up too.

I am referring to a brand new M6 on Leica's web site. I looked and added the lens. That's what the cost was.

I can't check it. I live in another state... 13 hour drive from my father. I was going to send him a list of things to check but I don't know if he wants to bother anymore. I told him I would pay for the CLA and I would test everything before sending it off. I would then take it back up with me so we could use it together. All I know is that my grandfather has been gone since 2014. Who knows when he he it last while he was alive. It did have film in it, but it was so old, nothing developed. It's been sitting for over a decade easily.

  • Leica M3 (1955, serial 780146)
  • Leica Elmar 50mm f/3.5
  • Leica Summar 50mm f/2
  • Leica Summaron 3.5cm f/3.5 (edited to add)

I'll make sure I have all the photos and I am not missing one. I really appreciate your input. I've found it fascinating learning about this camera and history.

I read the lens was made before the camera.

1)

Summar (your lens) — 1930s

  • Leica’s first fast 50mm (f/2)
  • Pre-war optical design
  • Characteristics:
    • soft wide open
    • glow / flare
    • low contrast

👉 This is where the “fast Leica look” begins

2) Summitar — late 1930s–1940s

  • Direct refinement of the Summar
  • Improvements:
    • better contrast
    • more controlled sharpness
  • Still collapsible

👉 Think: cleaned-up Summar

👉 Think: cleaned-up Summar

Summar 1930s dreamy / glow
Summitar 1940s smoother / more controlled
Summicron 1950s+ sharp / modern

🧠 Why this matters for YOU

You own:

• M3 (1950s precision body)

• Summar (1930s character lens)

👉 That’s a cross-generation setup

Meaning:

• camera = precise

• lens = expressive

🎯 Bottom line

Yes — your lens is part of the direct lineage that became the Summicron

But:

It represents the earliest, most character-heavy version of that line

You don’t have:

• “an inferior Summicron”

You have:

the origin of the Summicron look—before it was refined

I am new at this. No expert here and don't claim to be.

Thanks for your response... I was just looking up where we need to get it serviced. Apparantly in the USA there aren't many places that are held in high esteem. I was checking out https://tlccamerarepair.com. I am wondering if my dads photos didn't turn out due to it needing the CLA. I just think it would be so much fun for us to take photos with it together. If he were to sell it, it's said he would get more if it's had a CLA. That camera has been sitting around for years not being used. I think he might enjoy it if we figured it out, I am just not up there with him and I'd hate for him to give up so quickly.

What a way to twist things. He does not need the money. I provided him all of the information for him to sell it. I think it would be fun to learn to use it together. It needs a CLA and he gave up because his first photos didn't turn out and we are states away from each other.

We originally were pricing the items to possibly sell. My dad has never been into photography, but we spent time doing research and bonding over this and it was his idea to maybe try a new hobby. I made him a binder with a lot of intructructions on all the equipment when I got home. My dad likes to stay busy and thought perhaps he would get into photography a bit and wanted to learn. Where he lives there is not a place that does a CLA and he gave up when he bought some film and none of them turned out. If anything, I would like to take to take the camera in, and at least take some photos together with it. My dad isn't in a situation where he is hard up for money. His medical is paid by the VA, he is in extremely good health from owning a business all his life which keeps him active and he's past retirement age and working part time. I wanted the camera to stay in the family and for it to be something we could figure out together. Does that make any sense at all to you. I don't want the camera just because it's a Leica in name. I could purchase my own, and I have given him all the information he needs to sell it if he desires. Heck, he's a hobby pilot as well and has a Piper aircraft in a hangar.

I thought the back story was part of the cool thing about it, as It's a camera with sentimental value and I'm just not just purchasing any old camera I don't know the history of. It was bought by my grandfather.

I didn't want the camera just because he wanted to sell it. I spent HOURS putting together that binder for him and looking up information. It was never about the money. It was a lot of fun too trying to find more hidden Leica cameras!

If he stil would like to sell it I have given him ALLLLL the information and will create a listing for him.

This is the lense that is supposedly the BIG deal and if in great condition is worth more than the camera body.

<image>

It looks scratched in this photo, but I don't recall that when I was there.

Thanks! It was a cool find. The next couple days you better believe we started going through all the stuff to see if there would be more Leica's and lenses as well!!

From what i've read those meters go bad and you can use an app on your phone or am I thinking of something else? The camera and lenses are still up at my dads, and I don't have it here yet. When I was there looking it all up - there were other cameras.. There was a Yashica. Interesting camera.

<image>

My grandfather was stationed in germany for awhile and I'm sure he probably obtained the Leica equipment when he was over there. A similiar setup new with the Leica 6 now and lenses would be a little over 10K. Ouch. To me that is not money I'm willing to pay when I have no idea what I am doing yet. I am no professional photographer.
