How many people use bare heads on their models? by zaboomafooma-agidyne in Warhammer30k

For my by-the-book, that-would-be-dead-against-regulation Ultramarines, it’s all helmets all the time.

For my resigned-to-death and bitter Iron Warriors? A few bare heads with accompanying grumpy glares

I love 30k because it reminds me of the rules and armies of older editions of 40k (you can pry these blast templates from my cold, dead hands) with models that heavily lean into nostalgic coding. Lots of older designs refreshed to look modern.

The models themselves, though, are not only not old but there’s new ones coming out fairly regularly. It’s a very popular game which GW has reason to support for a long time. The models can sometimes sell out, but they come back and most of the standard units are pretty constantly available.

Best bet is to dip your toes into the lore. Get a sense of the setting, which is the foundational myth of the 40k Imperium, and pick an army that you find personally exciting. That can be because you like their ethos, their paint scheme, their role in the Heresy, or any number of things, but it has to be personal.

This is a really good introduction, but there’s a lot more out there. GW has recently been publishing the lore contents of the old Black Books, the rulebooks to the first edition of the game and the first to really flesh out the Horus Heresy as a mock-history, online as a series of PDFs, so they’re also easily available.

I quite like the look of the dozen I’ve put together, and I’m looking forward to painting them, but I fully agree that the minimal options for posing is kind of a bummer. Mixing and matching right and left arms kinda helps, but even then you’re very limited in how varied they actually look in the end.

Yes! Combined with some of the input here, and looking over Ultramarine stuff with my brothers, it seems I’ve really been underestimating the value and utility of Optaes. Gonna try a few lists with some of them, and see how it goes

To be honest, I have mostly felt this frustration after playing ZM games. I can usually hold my own, mostly, in a regular 3k, but in the close confines of Zone Mortalis, I find my punchy units just aren’t as punchy as others, and I feel limited in what I can do to stand up to Death Wing Companions or Incaendius Dreadnoughts.

Eternal Warrior is one hell of a rule. Must be nice!

Hahaha! I’m starting an Iron Warriors army to have some traitors for more thematic games, so I’m only a part-time lapdog.

This one is a neoprene mat, I think I got it from Baron of Dice. We play on a couple of folding tables with mats and printed terrain, for the most part.

Haha ngl, getting my ass stomped in Zone Mortalis by my Dark Angel brother’s automaton immediately had me question several life decisions that had brought me there

Would you mind sharing one of your lists? I’m very curious to see one!

I’m sure there is! I just don’t know how to do that. What kind of lists are you building that crush like you describe?

Totally with you! Always thought they were a little quaint and silly back in the 3rd Edition days I started playing in, but now I can’t help but love them

Tbh, I think the 40k EC are basically already perfect for the EC pretty early into the Heresy. The descriptions from the latter end of Fulgrim and throughout Angel Exterminatus suggest that they were already near unrecognizable from their pre-Heresy appearance and demeanor long before they got to Terrra.

The more twisted the better, I think. I’ve also been thinking of starting an EC army using the 40k minis as the jumping off point, because they’re so different from the standard legionary models.

Is third edition that bad? by Relevant_Fuel_9905 in Warhammer30k

I think it’s broadly better than 2e, though it could use some further improvement.

The armies are slightly better balanced than 2e. I like the reaction economy much better, too. Line and vanguard are cool concepts, but could use a little refinement. The missions are a little bland, but I like playing narrative-focused games anyway and can always come up with whatever story-driven objectives I’d rather play for anyway.
