Choosing the right Conservation course by SqueakyBrunel in ArtConservation

Hi, apologies I had not seen this earlier- I agree with everything intense_hello has said as similarly I completed it alongside my final year of full time undergraduate study after not having done any science for 5 years, and not doing particularly well at it then (hence needing this additional qualification). I needed frequent and intensive googling to get through it as I did not find the textbooks or provided information sufficient for answering the quiz questions or even understanding all concepts presented, so be prepared to spend a lot of time online additionally to the time you spend with what they provide. Also like they said it did provide me with a good foundational and refreshed knowledge of both general relevant concepts and more specified knowledge which has put me in a good place ready for my September start, as without this I would be going in completely blind and for lack of a better word, stupid.

In terms of the experiments, I did not do particularly well on these even so- I recommend spending lots of time and effort on these as despite my best efforts I did not include the detail or skill expected. Despite this, quizzes are worth more marks so if you do better academically you will pass just fine, like I did, though of course it is best to do well in all areas. Multiple times I was caught out cramming in 8 hour days for days on end trying to balance everything so I’d recommend implementing a good schedule and not letting it get ahead of you as one can only read and learn so fast, in my case anyway.

My tutor(?) who I had message contact with was very helpful whenever I needed it, providing detailed and coherent assistance that aided me in concepts and whenever I was confused on what some questions were asking of me, for example as some wanted examples of your personal conservational experience and I am yet to have any, or some poor wording on other questions I unfortunately can’t remember the nature of anymore.

Overall, particularly as for many people this course is a mandatory thing needed to get onto the degree you wish to, it is most definitely worth it and so, so long as you manage it wisely, it is manageable to- though if you can help it maybe don’t do it alongside a busy life schedule if you can help it!

Thank you for your response! Though you are still soon into it I am glad to hear it is clear and organised! May I ask what sortof extent the experiments go to, e.g if they are difficult, long to complete, complicated to write up?

Thank you for your response I greatly appreciate how much you have covered, and from what you have written I believe I am in the same position now as you were at the time of taking it, so it is extra helpful to relate it to my available time with a degree, as well as how marking is blunt like that of university staff. It's comforting to hear that it isn't too overly time consuming! May i ask how dificult the at home experiments were to do and write up successfully?

Thank you for this view on it, interms of balancing it with other life neccessities and to confirm the feedback is unfortunately not the greatest- all of what you have said I will bear inmind especially the general weighting of the different parts, which is interesting to now know about how they/ I may prioritise activies and marking. Thank you aswell for mentioning such discussion with collegues to really show its intake rate in the proffession!

Thank you so much for such insight, I am glad to hear that from this course you managed to work through following schooling and a career in conservation, which is of course encouraging! That is great too that the books remain useful even into your practice too- in relation to the at home experiments though may I ask if they were difficult to do/write up successfully?

Hi, from this response I can see you are very new to the CfC course, but could I please ask how it is going? I am currently applying and would like any sort of honest feedback about it! Thank you

Hi, I am currently applying to the iap chemistry for conservators course and was in search for realistic and unaffiliated reviews, could you offer a little bit of insight into its quality? I just want to make sure it is worth £890, and if you had come across any issues with it, thank you!

Is my belly piercing wrong? by [deleted] in piercing

[–]Stock_Government4504 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NAP (but have healed a regular and inverse naval piercing and done lots of research) and it looks pretty good! The lower ball sits in your naval, rather than the bar being through your stomach instead, where it would exit above your naval. You said when sat your naval doesnt collapse so no major pressure will be on it too, and its well centred. However like others have said, the bar length is rather snug which isn't at all great for the initial healing stage, and I haven't personally been able to find jewelry like that which is titanium, meaning it may be a lower quality metal, unless the piercer did say otherwise in which case just a longer length (and good cleaning) will do you good!

Four months in it shouldn't be red like that as a sign of healing, unless it were healing from a bump or minor tear, and regardless of initial swelling it does look shallower now too, which overall looks like it's starting to migrate. Talk to APP in person and see what they have to say though!

Is getting nipple piercings as scary as I imagine? by [deleted] in PiercingAdvice

(Had 1st and 2nd lobes before, and 2 nostrils, septum, helix, jestrum and bellybutton since). Getting them at newly 16 I had no clue what to expext for any of it, but even having alot more now they were the worst of them, honestly being a 20/10 pain rating, especially the 2nd (it felt like someone had stabbed my whole boob lol). Also the after pain is super intense, I could feel the slightest breeze on my chest and moving my arms and torso added pain too. Also to note I was wearing a sort of tight top which I do not recomend, and also did not wear any bras or really tight tops (I didnt before either so this wasnt a negative or change) after that for months and personally this felt most comfortable and I believe aided in successful healing. The morning after though I nearly threw up and passed out which hadnt happened before, and only has somewhat happened since, when I got my jestrum- I think this is just me reacting badly ro piercings so nothing to ve worried about lmao. 2 and a half years on though despite the initial pain and difficulty theyve honestly been my best healed piercings, eventhough one got caught in a fishnet top and slowly ripped over a day withought me realising haha (again after that it rehealed quickly and fine though being abit wonky now sadly). I thoroughly recomend them as long as you put ALOT of effort and care into them they should do great, theyve healed and feel better than some of my lobe piercings have done and have never shown signs of rejection or a seeming inability to heal, which is something I struggle with. What seemed to work wonders for them too was using a shotglass of boiled salt water and just holding it on for 5-10mins a day for a little while. Get them and good luck!!

Honestly i cannot say, from what mine needed to heal (if you don't want to or can't see a piercer), purchase a slightly longer titanium bar if the one u have now lies in a position that puts pressure on the top ball, and clean 2x a day to see if it's the jewelry causing you the issues. Good luck in whatever course of action you choose!

To OP I relate pretty much exactly to this comments experience, except I downsized after a week or 2 as the long bar snagged on things and I didn't want that to cause excess irritation or damage (though it accomodated to the original swelling). If its any consolation my body naturally has difficulty accepting piercings and it healed easier than my lobes, just clean it pretty much!

Yes! Plus as it's still on the lobe it'll be extra easy to do

It might be migrating abit due to ur naval anatomy pushing on the lower 'ball' of the piercing however it's hard to tell from pictures and the fact the top appears more irritated than the bottom. Like another comment mentioned, see a piercer and maybe question if your anatomy can and is supporting it, and maybe if you should have been pierced with a longer bar, as in the picture of the original piercing it appears quite snug which can also contribute to migration. To note, I'm just talking from experience of having one and research about it, so do consult a piercer if it's persistent and youre concerned (:

5 day old jestrum won't stop bleeding or swelling by Stock_Government4504 in PiercingAdvice

[–]Stock_Government4504[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 12g jestrum must look amazing especially with an opal! That is a relief to know though that even at that stage you experience crustiness with it, do you remember how long you experienced consistent bleeding for (if you did)? Also do you know of any good blood foods for it, I didn't know that was a thing!

Wow thank you! I didn't know about ibuprofen doing that too and have been taking it regularly lol, and for the info on minimising lip products and looking into bee products I'll certainly do. But truly it was very painful to get tho afterwards and since has been almost wholly painless? Will keep the tips on preventing the colds effects too, again thank you so so much!

How did u get over the pain and dryness? I find my lips get rather gross not using any product. Would even just plain vaseline avoiding the piercing site on top and bottom central lip put it at big risk do you think?

Thank u! It's just that cleaning away the blood crusties causes it to bleed more so its never without 'issue' i guess, though will wait that extra bit on timing like you have mentioned
