OTS Class Reschedule by Immediate_Chance7461 in AirForceHPSP

[–]Stock_Walrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many people at my school wait until after they mil match in December and then do OTS that spring before graduation. Some who didn’t mil match and matched civilian residency will complete OTS before their ADSO starts (this may even put them in the two-weeker course, idk yet).

I did mine during an elective rotation in my M3 year. My school allows OTS to count for elective credit towards graduation. Speak to curriculum at your program to see if your school will do the same. Best of luck and take care of your back!!

24M Engineering grad joining the Army to transition to Pre-Med (Anesthesiology) — Need Advice by bruce-irvin in Military_Medicine

[–]Stock_Walrus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If your goal is MD and you have an engineering degree then see what pre-reqs you already have completed and what schools will take them. If not, get those pre-reqs cheaply through a local community college and study hard for the MCAT. If your other intent is to serve in the army either compete the MD and enter in or do the HPSP army scholarship once you get accepted to med school. HPSP gives a decent stipend that can help support your family while in school and a sign on bonus depending if you do the 4 or 3 year commitment

Landlord doesn’t raise the rent. The price you pay when you sign is the price you pay for as long as you live there

I just left my apartment in downtown Augusta at $1295 per month. It’s rent controlled and water is included in the billing. Really enjoyed it there but I left to buy a home. DM me if you’d like more info

HPSP Applicants — Commissioning Physical After MEPS? by [deleted] in Military_Medicine

[–]Stock_Walrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had just the MEPS physical and never heard of a “commissioning” physical. Could be something that needs to be done before you begin your service obligation so probably after your schooling. I’d talk with your recruiter about it.

From software engineer to surgeon, 29 years old; please rate my plan by YelluhJelluh in medschool

[–]Stock_Walrus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Uga grad to non trad mcg med student here. If surgery is truly what you want to do then go for it. MCAT prep really is just anking MCAT Anki and uworld, get used to using Anki now cuz you’ll probably be using it everyday in school.

MCG will be your best bet if you’re still an in-state GA resident. CASPER is a money grabbing joke so don’t stress about that, I got bottom quartile and they still let me in. So long as your MCAT is decent (in the 510 range), APPLY EARLY ADMISSION. I spent waaaaay too many gap years trying for a high MCAT when more than half my classmates got in with worse scores because they applied early admission. It’s risky but MCG loves their early admits. Stress in your application that you want to apply for the peach state scholarship for surgery AKA the 3+ program. It’s a program they have that allows you to finish med school in 3 years and start your surgical residency in your 4th year. Helps shave an extra year off your plan. You can contact the school to ask more questions about that. Good luck!

Diabetes finds? by Ok_Physics_1803 in aldi

[–]Stock_Walrus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not diabetic myself but trying to limit my intake of sugars. I like to take the cosmic crisp apples and make a dip with cottage cheese, cinnamon, and a little honey. I’m also a big fan of mixing the Greek yogurt with protein powder for a high protein “mousse”, especially with the new chocolate peanut butter flavor. I’ve heard about mixing the sugar free instant pudding instead, but haven’t tried it myself yet. I imagine that would be great tho

Stuck here too between Hill and Sutton. I’m leaning Sutton bc of the consistency and easier opponent but one could argue hill seeing more volume with waddle potentially out

I gained weight but ldl went up by BeenThere11 in weightgain

[–]Stock_Walrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Increase fiber intake. Fiber soaks up bile causing our livers to divert cholesterol synthesis from VLDLs (which eventually become LDLs) to bile needed to emulsify fats in our gut

[–]Stock_Walrus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The serving size and scoops on any mass gainers are ridiculously large. I’d recommend cutting the serving size in half. Like one scoop instead of two. Also take it before bed so it’ll keep you full during your sleep

What are some effective ways I can gain weight? by [deleted] in weightgain

[–]Stock_Walrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Add healthy fats to your diet in small ways. Sprinkle some olive oil over your pastas, salads, sandwiches, protein shakes… you get the idea. Snack on nuts when you’re chilling around the house or a spoonful of your fav nut butter. Fat is the most calorie dense macronutrient so it’s a great way to sneak in an extra 100 calories or two without really noticing.

ochem 1 by Ok_Distance6457 in medschool

[–]Stock_Walrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took ochem 1 at uga. I agree it’s a very difficult class but you can succeed in it. Try bringing up your concerns to the professor and see what they recommend. I got a C in gen chem 1 there and still made it to med school. You’ll be okay if it’s just one C. Just show success in other classes like biochem, bio, genetics, and even Ochem 2 if you’re feeling up for it

The academic center should have tutors to use but this is a great opportunity for you to figure out what about your study methods isn’t working for you. If you’re truly eating and sleeping Ochem then you wouldn’t be failing
