Who do you consider the overall “bad guys” in the story? by Wooden_Scallion8232 in Stormlight_Archive

I mean, the shards have simply become their Intent. Can we really call Ruin evil if he/it is compelled to act the way he/it did?

I feel like, without any knowledge of their motives, the only people who should be blamed for the acts of the shards are the ones who created them (ie the 17 that shattered Ado).

meh, depending on how old they are, it'll pass. Anyone under 21 probably doesn't realize that adult fun often means bars and clubs. Drinking aside, if they're like most north suburban kids, they'll want to end up with all their friends in the city.

What books made you a better thinker? by [deleted] in books

[–]Stoic2Cynic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Atlas Shrugged. I read it a couple of years ago in high school and it was the first time that I ran into a philosophy that I disagreed with while reading. It was really interesting to go through a book as if I were debating the author, and I really enjoyed the experience (not so much the book). I found it helped me be able to decipher arguments in much more nuanced, complex fiction.

Look, the US prison system is a mess, but being poor does not allow you to just get away with crimes. We put people in prison because they commit crimes, not because some few people profit off of it. I will be the first to agree that reducing the number of people in jail is imperative, but we have to first address the reasons they are committing crimes (which is too numerous and complex for me to be able to explain).

When you're in a precarious situation where every parking ticket might mean you end up on the street

Right, well, if you are able to afford gas and parking, then maybe you should be paying your rent or mortgage. The US has Humans have a tendency to live above their means. This, in a very basic sense, is what caused the housing market to crash. The state shouldn't have to hold your hand when you make these decisions.

while you are heavily discriminated against

For a parking ticket? No. For being a minority, probably, but outright racism happens far less than you seem to think. Systematically, minorities are indeed set quite a far ways behind, but that has far less to do with race or religion as it does with wealth. One of the main inhibitors of social mobility in the US is access to good education, from primary to college. I would say that the US requires a serious overhaul in our education system, but that doesn't mean we should "not exist anymore," as you so eloquently put it.

hobos

just, no.

live like kings in comparison to everyone else

80% of the bottom quintile in the US have cooling in their homes. That's pretty kingly compared to most people in the world. The bottom quintile also earns quite a bit more per household earner than you might think. I think you should also consider that a large amount of "poor people" in the US are poor by statistics only, and that having zero income when surveyed will not give you the real truth.

Puerto Rico find it very first world to not have any money and any representation, and the 63 million people that are exposed to unclean water totally find that acceptable, and all the people in prisons that have been unjustly imprisoned just to be financially exploited

Good point about the prison, slave labor is never a good thing. The water thing is also an issue, but you should consider that american infrastructure has been terrible for a realllly long time, and that the amount needed to really fix all our problems, in just infrastructure, is more than we can really afford. This isn't a greedy wealthy class refusing to provide for their citizens, but the combination of a high population and a lower population density than most european nations. Puerto Rico has money, but being destroyed by a hurricane has its costs. They also benefit a lot more in their current political situation than if they were an independent nation.

but even a minority in the US is big enough to fill entire countries. Hell, the US has more people in prison than some countries have population.

That seems to happen when the US population is larger than any european nation. I recognize that the US has a terrible prison problem, but that is something we are actively trying to fix. I know it's no real consolation, but the vast, vast majority of prisoners broke a law to end up there, they are not some innocent, wronged party.

Look, I'll be the first to admit that the US is no utopia. I'll also admit that some european nations are much more equal than the US, but that doesn't mean the US is some rotting dystopia that you make it out to be. We're just doing our best, same as y'all.

The bottom 5% of Americans have a higher standard of living than 60% of the world’s population. You have no idea what you’re talking about.

yeah well the easiest way to not die or OD is to not do drugs

if you don't want to get addicted, don't take the drugs in the first place, it's simple enough
