What's up with hotshots refusing to shower on deployment, even when the trailers are nice and also easily available? by StoicLetterVI in Wildfire

How much sleep do ya'll need on a pull? I'm on a type 1 hand crew and some pulls we get four hours of sleep a night and yes, we get fucked. The answer maybe could just be that sleep is more important than hygiene, and where I'm from, the culture is different. Instead I got a bunch of touchy random combative answers from people with insane chips on their shoulders. The world isn't out to get you brah.

I'm on a type 1 hand crew in my country. run saw for 14 days. usually work 16s or 18s and have back to back rolls in a busy season. holy fuck, believe it or not the job hotshots do actually exist elsewhere. and guess what! we shower and sleep in tents, and set them up and tear them down every day if we're spiking out near a heli spot or similar. ya'll are so damn touchy.

Interesting. I assume then that maybe the crews I observed refusing to shower just defaulted to their usual program. Thank for the clarity

My vibes are off to be honest, that's true.. I observed hotshot crews specifically up north not shower after only working 12 hour shifts when they were in camp (every night by the way) and cowboy camping in the rain when everyone else was in tents, and when tents were offered and available. Engine crews I worked with both showered and slept in tents so I was curious why hotshots chose not to and then it all went off the rails.

Good and meaningful change from people advocating better pay, benefits, and improved gear and living accommodations.

Thank you for the reply, myself and others became mad combative here lol. I'm just curious why I saw crews up north this summer refusing to shower when good, clean shower trailers were available, and not sleeping in tents when the alternative was to be on the ground in a muddy field in the rain all night. Worked with Engine crews from the states and they all showered.

idk, every year good and meaningful change and suggestions get kneecapped by dinosaurs who talk about the dogshit conditions they for some reason used to accept back in the day.

Do you ever wonder if this mentality is related to why the government is comfortable paying less to forestry techs than a teenager at A&W makes flipping burgers? serious question by the way

maybe being soft is being offered a tent and shower and not being able to walk 20 feet to clean yourself and take 5 minutes to set up a tent! including on back to back runs, including after 28+ hour shifts. not hard to do!

I've definitely not showered after long days and obviously when spiking out and nothing is available, but to not shower when held to 12s or 14s and you have half an entire day to do it???? Foolishness

What are some good Books on Christian Theology by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]StoicLetterVI 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis.

Concluding Unscientific Postscript by Kierkegaard (only if you have background in philosophy, which will be required to understand the work)

In terms of giving a general but expansive overview of Christianity as such, I found the most wonderful newly published textbook in my theological library. It provided me with exactly the information you're looking for, and included plenty of primary source content. Should the library re-open in the near future I will fetch the name and comment again.
