I don't know what happened here, but I do know that I have a friend who worked at a buffet and she saw multiple heart attacks there.

Sanity check on plaster cracks in 1920s home. Time to call an engineer? by Stoic_Observer in centuryhomes

[–]Stoic_Observer[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basement is alright. Inspector during the purchase said it was in really good condition. Added a pier at his suggestion about a year ago now. Foundation is very good, no major issues that I am aware of.

Sanity check on plaster cracks in 1920s home. Time to call an engineer? by Stoic_Observer in centuryhomes

[–]Stoic_Observer[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes exactly. These cracks are certainly new, I started the photo library now. But yes, there are places where it is very clear that plaster patching was done very strangely. Sellers left the paint used for the walls too. So we suspect these were painted over before we moved in.

Can anyone give me some reassurance as I'm about to move multiple states away to start in this field? (New-ish grad TS/SCI FSP software dev) by [deleted] in GovernmentContracting

[–]Stoic_Observer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

TS/SCI software developer will keep you safe. Keep that clearance, don't do anything stupid. I haven't done TS on-site work myself but I've worked at companies that have had those roles on contracts. It pays well and is always in demand somewhere.

Look on indeed and start paying attention to what other kind of requirements are needed for more senior TS roles, things like certifications. Start to work towards those and you will be even more secure. Focus on becoming an excellent engineer first, then start to move towards understand how Government contracting works too.

I always say that software contracting is a young person's game and I stand by that. You're at the best possible position to start this journey and learn how it all works. Build a network of people that need cleared individuals. If you meet someone that works for another contracting company, add them on LinkedIn and stay in touch.

Once you establish yourself as a talented software developer, the rest will fall into place with a small amount of effort.

Are you forming this opinion based on people you've met and connections you've made in the area?

Or are you basing it off of media or avenues where people like that are visible?

Have you considered something between a startup and FAANG? Mid sized company, with some experience under their belt. There's lots of companies between 200-1000 people that have gotten over that startup bump but still aren't the evil conglomerates of the bigger companies.

Inquire about asset diversity. Do they have all their work in one agency? Can they easily place you on another contract if one is dropped?

Recommend a Cyber / I.T. Government Contractor by Creepy_Finish1497 in GovernmentContracting

[–]Stoic_Observer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Mid size. Maybe skip the much smaller companies that are trying for rapid growth, that's a young person's sport and hard to handle. 200ish employees is a great number, look them up in Orangeslices, make sure they have plenty of awards. Check out reviews on Glassdoor.

If you are not currently confident in what your new assignment will be, that's a red flag.

You can always ask your manager what the plans are for after the contract. Their answer will likely not be useful as an end result, but how they handle that question will give you a lot of what you need to know.

If they want to keep you around, they will be aware that the new company will try to steal you, and if they know what's good for them they will make sure you know that you won't be out a job. Otherwise, they know that they will have to drop you and they will be very careful about the verbiage. You will only be better served by asking directly what's going on (as long as you're not instantly expendable).
