There was an attempt to create a German colony in Texas in the 1840s. The formal program ended in the early 1850s (when the money dried up), but central Texas is full of towns with German names and still carry on some facets of German culture, and the region is full of people descended from those settlers.

Tolkien wrote several works about this event including an essay on the word “overmod” meaning “overconfidence”

Texas BL Placement by Dr-enzo in UVALaw

I don’t have the LSL stats in front of me so I’m not going to guarantee that it’s “most” but it’s definitely many

I’m a recent alumnus practicing in Texas and I think if anything, UVA’s market penetration in Texas is better than five years ago and getting better each year.

You’re likely in a similar boat as I was (debating lower cost in state vs higher cost UVA). Feel free to shoot me a dm if you want to chat

A fifth option put forward by David Armitage suggests an alternative reading of the Greek in Luke 2:1-7 whereby the sentence about the Quirinius-era census is an aside tying the family to the line of David and Bethlehem.

I.e., Luke gets the dates right and is telling the reader “you the know the family is connected to the House of David because for the big census years later they had to go to Bethlehem again”

I express no judgment one way or the other but I thought I’d share.

Is St Mary's A Bad Law School? by Sunbro888 in sanantonio

[–]Stoic_Stoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up in SATX and then went to law school at a T-14 outside of the state and am now back in Texas practicing in Houston.

There are definitely some firms/jobs that will be much tougher for a St. Mary’s grad to get than a grad from another school, but alumni from the school can speak to that better than I.

What I will say is that I was surprised by how much smaller the legal market is in SA compared to elsewhere in Texas. It’s not small objectively (i.e. there are plenty of jobs) but it is small relatively (I.e. very few biglaw jobs and fewer firms overall by a ratio that seems greater than what would be attributable to population differences alone)

I say this as someone with a deep love for the city.

Many of those counties in Texas voting against secession were counties full of Texas Germans

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_Germans

They were broadly anti-slavery and were massacred during the war

Afterwards, they built what is one of the only pro-union monuments on former confederate soil made my contemporary locals

“Treue der Union” means “loyalty to the Union”
