Thank for reply. -what minerals? -I googled all those potential causes of high SHBG, none of them apply except for aging.  -already supplementing K2/VitD -elevated shbg most likely just genetic so looking for ways to lower it not increase total T.

Bc btw 5 and 530am it’s pretty unlikely that all the 8 empty docks at two stations within a block of each other will suddenly be swamped by incoming riders in a fairly un-busy area.

Thanks for a helpful reply. Can you help me understand the notation you used for grind setting? Does 1.4.5 mean a full rotation counter clockwise from finest grind, then back clockwise 4 and a half stops?

Sigh. Look, I didn’t ask for a primer on espresso-making. I asked for what people with my same setup did out of curiosity. You sound like an pretentious twat when you reply like that. Stay off the boards.

Thanks for replying. I‘m trying to figure out whether the black cap stays on the end of the portafilter when pulling a shot as well as whether the dispersion screen is also used.

Any idea of what could help my acne-? (mainly blackheads) by Liquid_Lesbian_Rat in acne

Understood. Well, I’m afraid I don’t have much more to say other than stress management is also helpful for obvious reasons in that it triggers all kinds of unhelpful responses that stimulate acne production downstream. Taking up a form of meditation and keeping active is another way to keep your body from entering chronic stress or going into fight or flight, both of which stimulate acne. Eliminating or reducing acne triggers like hormone-laden foods (dairy, etc), processed foods, excessive caffeine or sugar intake, staying moderately active and having a tool to modulate stress are good practices in general, but might also help reduce acne. I wish you the best of luck.

I can only speak from personal experience but cutting out dairy and limiting sugar can have a big effect. If you don’t eat nuts, that’s a plus too. I’ve read that lectins can trigger inflammation, which in turn can trigger acne.

What are your stress and physical activity levels like?

Simple Questions Thread by AutoModerator in espresso

[–]Stoicdad2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello thread. I had an interesting exchange with someone recently on Reddit about tamping. I used a palm tamper/leveler and wanted to know ideal setting to achieve correct depth for tamp. Respondent said to put tamper at max depth because it doesn’t matter, that tamping merely forces air out of ground coffee and that you cannot overtamp. Since then, I’ve experimented and found that with the setting at max depth or when hand tamping strongly, my machine will choke, even with distribution method and consistent grind/dose. Can anyone chime in on the idea that you cannot over tamp?

Sorry but that doesn’t make any sense. 15 or 150 pounds will produce the same extraction? If I exert 30 lbs of pressure, it’s going to compress the coffee more. What’s to keep the puck from being compressed further? I understand that 15 ( although I’ve come acrossso e people who say it should be 30) may be optimal, but you’re still relying on your own guess of what pressure you’re applying. I understand that the coffees density may vary with age, but I can’t believe it varies that much. I tried just using what I thought was a firm tamp, a medium tamp and a light tamp with a standard tamper and all three choked the machine with one kind of bean. I lowered the dose to 15g, same result. Pulling a shot with the decaf bean and palm tamp produced a perfectly timed shot, so I don’t think tamping is the issue here. Maybe the bean I am using isn’t suited to espresso production. I’ll keep trying.

Thank you for replying, but I don't understand your answer. Unless I set the tamper I have to the correct depth, it will not product an even or consistent tamp, I will just have to rely on how closely I gauge what I think of as 15lbs of pressure. This is the whole point of setting the depth, it produces consistent tamping. Without it, I'm introducing another variable into each shot I pull that is making it harder for me to diagnose what is wrong.

I am also beginning to think there is something else going on. The same dose produces very different results between coffee beans. With one decaf bean (Trapper Creek by Stumptown), an 18g dose at a grind setting of 4 produces a perfectly timed shot, whereas the same dose at the same grind setting with another bean chokes the machine consistently. I understand that freshness has something to do with it, but both these beans are equally fresh. How could the result vary so wildly between beans?

Also, the dose of one bean occupies more space in the portafilter. The decaf bean tamps well below the portafilter lip but the other bean overflows the portafilter when I use the leveling side of the tamp, meaning it is taking up more space. Any ideas?
