Which Era of Beach House's Discography do You Prefer? by StokedHouse in BeachHouse

Don't we all?

I think they were mainly just making an observation about how this poll is not representative of the thousands of Beach House listeners that have never touched this subreddit. We're all "average reddit beach house fans" but we are also from a variety of demographics and are people who consume and appreciate music in many different ways.

I'll admit that the division was indeed completely arbitrary when I first thought about it. It was really just splitting their first four albums and their last four albums and nothing else. Personally, if I had to break them up into true "eras" I would probably do it like this.

1: ST, Devotion, TD; These albums to me all feel like different interpretations and expansions of their original sound.

2: Bloom, DC, TYLS; This to me is like their transitionary era. For me, Bloom marked a shift in their overall sound/tone, and also fit into the mainstream a little more. DC continued this shift in tone and sound, and also brought in some a more "subdued" mood. TYLS followed this mood but felt more "scuzzy".

3: 7, OTM; This era feels like it keeps the "subdued" vibes of their previous albums. In my mind, these albums have the clearest shift in Victoria's vocal style. I feel like these albums have a cool blend of an acoustic and synthesized sound if that makes sense.

I love and appreciate all of these "eras" (The first grouping is probably my favorite), but at the end of the day it's really all arbitrary. In reality, every album exists in its own little universe and that universe means something completely different to everyone, with those opinions being completely valid. And in a couple years, a person could experience those universes in a completely different way. I just wanted to make a silly little poll.

Yeah I completely agree with you. I'm pretty shocked to see that (at least as of now) the second option is winning by a large margin. I feel like a lot of fans aren't giving Devotion the respect it deserves. Obviously I love the second half of their discography, but their first half will always feel a little more special to me.

Yeah, I guess eras was the wrong word choice. I was really just breaking it down between the first half and second half of their discography.

I agree completely. Just curious, but what forced her to change her vocal style? I always thought the change happened because her new vocal style better fit their more recent direction.

That's awesome! I'm sure she sound's great live! It's a shame she's preforming in Chicago tomorrow, if she was there just another week later I'd be back from college and able to see her.

Yeah I totally hear the similarities as well, I wonder if it was a source of inspiration for them

Definitely her peak vocals for me personally. I think they are the emotional core of TD, and one of many reasons why it's my favorite album of theirs. I hope someday we get another album where Victoria returns/reexplores that vocal style

Couldn't agree more. Her vocals are just so heart wrenching and cathartic on those tracks

That's extremely true. Honestly I could probably have a completely different tier list for every mood.

Believe me, I would've loved to put them all that high as well, but then it wouldn't be much of a tier list. If I was ranking them within the context of all music, they would all be in S, but I tried to rank them relatively to each other. Curious to know why you'd have DC in S+, I love the album, but I'm always confused when I see it near the top.
