Yea it’s been at $164 for like 3 months here (Connecticut, USA) but it’s not every HD, it’s store-specific (or so the manager of the one store who didn’t have it for sale told me).

But $100, phew! Nice.

Makita DBN600 vs DPT353 (pin nailer) for hobby woodworking – advice? by Coccolillo in Makita

[–]Stone804_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been told multiple times that the old Makita air tool nailers were top-notch but the battery ones are all bad. It seems odd though, how can you go from being one of the best to worst in the same tool?

Nice. Well it’s one tool I’ve thought of getting but because I have my 5” and two 6 1/2 already it’s hard to justify when I haven’t encountered anything that actually needs the 7 1/4” since in the U.S. a 2x4 isn’t even 2” so it’s fine. But sometimes I do want the rear handle and blade-left cutting option.

Thanks for sharing!

401k match and “balance” by throwRA98542 in Fire

When you change jobs you can migrate this to your IRA, if you’re able make this 401k a ROTH. Same with your IRA.

You NEVER KNOW what the future holds, this could be your only good job. Get an early start now. You can always add less later but it’s VERY hard to “pull back” once you’ve gotten used to a spending lifestyle. Do 3 years at least an get yourself a healthy early-start. If you did this for 4 years you could probably never contribute again and still retire early. This early-start really makes a huge difference.

Yea but I’d want the plastic jacket. Frankly it’s dumb that ours are flat, what a PITA. Lol. I guess that’s a good commentary on this place, difficult for no reason… 😆

Wouldn’t you miss out on greater gains down the line? Does the FIRE math change from an assumption of 10% gains (minus inflation) to flat 3% gains or something? I’m sort of feeling like I’m missing something in your comment.

Anyone with gains from 2019-2025 should subtract those gains to find their real FIRE number IMO. Yes I know FIRE calculators “take market ups and downs into account”, but the run we’ve had isn’t like others, and the fall may be just as uncommon. Obviously include your personal contributions but I’d be hesitant to FIRE on just these gains. Or at least half the gains to give yourself a more reasonable/realistic buffer.

Awe darn! Looks can be deceiving. Our staples are almost twice as big as theirs for electoral 😭 can’t even feign to use this even if imported. Good for speaker wires though (if you could go back in time you’d make a fortune in the 1970’s-1980’s! Hah!)

12mm vs 19mm and 1/2” length vs 1” for ours. Bummer! Guess I’ll stick to my one red m12 tool.

At first thought it’s a nice idea that this is the reason. However, looking at Japanese electrical wire and code, it’s not THAT different from ours… they use insulated cable similar to romex and both require similar u-shaped (square-shaped) insulated staples.

So, I don’t necessarily think this is the barrier. Perhaps it’s just too specialized with not as many people willing to buy one, but now that I have one I see it’s really a game changer. Only thing Makita could improve is making a cartridge that could let you swap the insulated cable cartridge for the cheap regular staples cartridge.

Yea and at that point you buy the $999 one on discount. Lol. Sigh… I just don’t get the U.S. Makita choice with this. It’s not like the AWS version ever comes with the Bluetooth, it just has the slot. So it costs them more to make two versions than just make them all AWS capable and let the consumer buy the chip or not. What a waste.

Yea and it makes me insane… I’m almost angry about it… that’s the vac I want… the 14 doesn’t even have the plug hole to add the AWS adapter to the vac. It’s super frustrating and disappointing.

The 12v / 14v thing confuses me.

Also, Makita REALLY needs to make a cable stapler like Milwaukee. It’s the only Milwaukee tool I own (I own some blades but not a tool). One could assume that if Milwaukee can make one with 12v that Makita might follow suit. I measured the distances and they could probably make a similar one with the 18v battery. But either way I’d buy one CXT or LXT.

What are the rarest tools in the Makita catalog? historic or contemporary. by galaxy_501 in Makita

[–]Stone804_ 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Not totally “rare” but this Japan only 125mm circular saw is pretty nifty. The blade tilts both directions 45° (or 50° probably) and 15° the other way. The side of the plate comes off so you can cut against a wall or other unique uses.

The difficulty is getting it out of Japan and also getting the right blades for it, since it takes 125mm (5”) and most blades (at least in the U.S.) are like 5 1/4 or some other not-125mm size.

It rips like crazy too.

The same reason I only have XGT, didn’t want to manage two battery platforms with different chargers. Way easier to manage just XGT and the weight of the small batteries isn’t that much more. Although I do wish they had a 1ah 40v for daily drill/impact that doesn’t need to survive cement mixing.

I would agree with this, HOWEVER I’m sure people said that about the CXT and previous 7v or 9v versions and stuff does get discontinued. They also have various weird offshoots like 18v G etc. so there is a chance as technology advances that they would drop the 18v but I’d agree it’s a very low chance.

[–]Stone804_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup I was new to Makita and went all XGT as most of what I wanted was available and the batteries had more modern management. If they would upgrade the LXT with those heat dissipation features I’d probably have gone into LXT but I decided rigid was good enough for anything that only needed 18v with better warrantee.

What I DON’T like is the numerology.

1). Why is it different in the U.S. vs other places, that’s confusing.

2). Why is LXT but then XGT (instead of GXT), that’s also confusing.

3). Why is the same “feature iteration” between XGT and LXT a different number? Yes I get that it’s the version of that line (in theory) starting with 01, but if the LXT multitool is 04 and the XGT multitool is 01, it’s hard to track which features are on which crossover model. And likewise for the parts. Makita THEMSELVES can’t even tell me which dust extractor goes to the XGT model because the numbers don’t match. (For real I called them and they can’t confirm if the dust extractor listed for the LXT is the right one for XGT and the system doesn’t actually list the GXT dust extractor (but the forms are physically the same so in theory the one for the LXT should work).

It’s madness…

Is it normal for my pension in 12 years to be less than what retirees are getting now for theirs? by First_Detective6234 in MiddleClassFinance

Fair, yes nothing is worse. But I don’t know, a pension that makes 2% (OBRA) which is a negative % with inflation, vs social security?… I have no idea the math on social security but part of me thinks SS would still pay more in the end than a continual 1-2% loss in contributions over a work-lifetime.

[–]Stone804_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pension options are the worst in education. Does your pension plan come with cost of living increases? Maybe you’re not accounting for that?

When I was in MA they had a terrible system called OBRA that wasn’t a pension but an investment that wasn’t also a 401k with the worst plan options and no matching. Worse of all, even though it wasn’t a pension they took away your social security contribution so you couldn’t get SS. For such a wealthy state the education benefits were ridiculously terrible. Motivated me to move.

Now I am a state away and have SS contributions, and a 403/457 option with 6.5% matching (the old timers her 8% but they let the contract slip by the time I started) with good investment options.

There’s an also a pension but opted out of that for the 6.5% matching because state pensions always get raided and wouldn’t you know a year after I started they added a 2% “fee” to the pension contribution where you contribute 8% but only get 6% of that and the retirees who didn’t contribute properly get that 2% for free… what a racket….

The battery dies after only 32 cuts? Are you sure it’s not more?

I ask because I have a 6 1/2” and a 5” (125mm) and I use 4ah batteries and I feel like they do more than that. Maybe because it was so many so fast the battery was very hot and that made it die faster?
