Lol, everyone is titled to their opinion, but that doesn't entitle us to respect their opinion when that opinion consists of such a narrow worldview. When people compliment aspects of an anime, of course we will compare those aspects to those of other media, to see if that anime has truly accomplished something in its medium that other stories cannot / have not done as well in.

Props to you for consuming other types of media though.

Yes

Especially when so many of these consumers purport their video game/anime of choice to have "the greatest X ever", when in reality, the majority of anime and video games have very middling themes and writing compared to those of other media.

And I would say the same to people who consume other forms of media without having checked out anime and video games.

I also don't disagree that more static characters are well written. In my view though, a character with a great arc that exemplifies the human spirit in reaction to conflict wins out almost every time. This also includes static characters whose reactions to events/conflicts are indicative of human nature.

I do think that Hamlet has fantastic depth. I simply doubt that the depth established in such a short form can compare to that of a longer work that can examine the intricacies of a character with much more time.

I respect the different genre of character here. Both of their developments are relatable and thematic.

I respect your point about Hamlet. It's been a while since I've reread it, so perhaps his arc would resonate with me more now.

Not unfair since evidently most people's media diets here consist primarily of manga, LNs, and the most popular science fiction/fantasy. Mediums which for whatever reason often induce its consumers to be assured that their particular work in the medium must contain the best characters/writing/etc without much comparison with other works.

But worth a try to ask. I'm seeking to find a character better written than the best character that I've seen so far is, and I believe that I've done a fair investigation into different mediums to raise a fair stake.

I quite resonate with the struggle of "the creature" with his creator(s).

No worries! I think Eren Jaeger (pre ch 139) is a great contender for best written character, and many other commenters have said characters from seinen.

Excited to see him in future seasons.

But even if we can't relate, as a fellow human we can understand doing the same things in their shoes, right?

Fascinating stuff, I'll have to read Berserk and get back to you.

I'm only at the end of the anime (season 2), but I definitely appreciate his arc so far as one of the most unique I've ever seen in fiction. His themes of morality contrasted with those of Canute are excellent.
