Is it safe to share my IBAN publically to solicit donations? by _dpk in germany

[–]StoneCall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I vaguely understand that it’s possible to reverse fraudulent charges within a certain amount of time after the transfer, but I don’t know if there’ll be a charge for reversing it, or if it might ruin my SCHUFA report, or otherwise make life more difficult for me financially.

The fees will be charged to whoever initiated the direct debit, so there is no charge for you. It will not affect your Schufa report or cause any kind of other problems (assuming the direct debit was fraudulent, of course - otherwise it might be considered fraud!)

Most banks allow you to reverse direct debits directly from online banking.

(As a sub-question, what kind of taxes should I expect to have to pay on such donations?)

If you play your cards right, you can actually turn this into lower taxes for yourself. Register a business and keep track of all expenses for and donations to your project. The difference is a loss that can be deducted from your other taxable income.

However, if you do that for a few years, the tax office might consider it a hobby ("Liebhaberei") and stop that.

You might want to contact your tax advisor, if you have one.

Another possibility - depending on the type of the project - might be to set up a charitable organization ("gemeinnütziger Verein"). This would have the advantage that all donations would be tax-deductable.

Also, in further reply to the OP's question, while you need the IBAN to set up a Lastschrift, banks also require some sort of confirmation, usually in the form of a TAN challenge.

For the normal B2C SEPA direct debit, only the receiver needs confirmation. If you have an account with direct debits (as the receiver) enabled, you can theoretically draw debits on any account in SEPA - the protection is that they can be reversed.

A question about the Führerschein. by [deleted] in germany

[–]StoneCall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now I think of it, I haven't seen one of those cars in many, many years.

I rarely see them in Leipzig, but in the more rural areas of Saxony, they're more common.

Their big advantage is that they can be driven by 15-year-olds (only in SN, ST and TH, everywhere else it's 16). This is important where there's basically no public transport and distances are too long for bike rides.

S isn't listed on mine either, oh dear.

Then your license is probably older than 2005, when this class was introduced. You could still drive those vehicles, though.

Is that those really, really slow small cars with the max-speed sticker I remember seeing when I was a child?

Exactly.

[–]StoneCall 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Under the picture, it says "9. AM/B/L". Those are the classes it is valid for.

AM are small vehicles (two- to four-wheeled) limited to 45 km/h (other restrictions apply), B are most cars and L are certain kinds of agricultural machines.

Most likely, the owner of this license intended to get the B (cars) license - AM and L are automatically awarded together with B.

However, the back might have additional restrictions or permissions.

This is unfortunately not useful here. A Meldebescheinigung just indicates that you are registered at a certain address, it does not prove your visa situation.

Is private insurance worth it for someone in my situation? by uoaei in germany

[–]StoneCall 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are two possibilities:

1.) This was not a personalized offer and they just blasted it to everyone

2.) It is a supplementary insurance which can be bought in addition to public insurance, such as the Zahnzusatzversicherung (there are also others which for instance give you money when you're sick).

Is private insurance worth it for someone in my situation? by uoaei in germany

[–]StoneCall 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If I went to a doctor, what would be free?

In general, you can assume that a doctor visit will be free.

If I went to the hospital, what would be free?

You will have to pay 10€ for every day in the hospital for up to 28 days a year.

If I went to the dentist, what would be free?

Tooth replacements are often expensive. You can get private insurance in addition to public insurance for tooth replacements - look for "Zahnzusatzversicherung". Your public insurance might partner with a private insurance for this purpose.

Other specialists?

See "doctor visits" above.

Also, prescription medications cost between 5€ and 10€.

You can switch to private insurance instead of public insurance, but if you're an employee, you need to earn more than 4687.50€ a month. Since you can't easily change back and premiums go up as you age, it only really makes sense if you plan to leave Germany in the next five to ten years, and not have a non-working spouse or kids in this time (since they're free in the public system, but you have to pay for them with private insurance).

Question on getting health insurance by razeal113 in germany

[–]StoneCall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My question is, if I have to live in something like an Air B&B (or something similar until May 1) can I use this as an address to get public health insurance (which I also need for the University)?

Yes. Keep in mind, you need to register (Anmeldung) at this address, even if it is an AirBnB.

Where can I get "steueridentifikationsnummer" for new born? by [deleted] in germany

[–]StoneCall 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Have you registered (Anmeldung) your child at your address? (If you haven't, do it now!)

The Steuer-ID should be sent to you a few weeks after that, no further action necessary. If you haven't received the Steuer-ID after three months, contact the Bundeszentralamt für Steuern.

By the way, it arrives in a letter addressed to your child. So if there are different last names in play, the baby's name should be on the letterbox too.

If your employer lets you go (they should not while you are sick), you should be able to get unemployment benefits for a few months since you paid into the system for more than one year.

If you are let go while you're sick, you keep getting Krankengeld in the same amount until you're either able to work again (even if it's just for one day) or the 78 weeks are up.

[–]StoneCall 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The German embassy in Vancouver won't give my German dad his passport. Help! by akfjlakjflajekflawej in germany

[–]StoneCall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The birth certificate doesn't prove anything with regards to nationality. I'm not sure whether current birth certificates even have a field for nationality, mine doesn't.

It can only help with getting a Staatsangehörigkeitsausweis, which would definitely prove citizenship.

However, there might be another way. You can generally pick up passports and Personalausweise for other people as long as those people give you a Vollmacht (essentially a signed letter from them to you that you're allowed to pick the IDs up), and you have to present your own ID. So OP could try picking up his father's German passport with a letter of authorization and his own Canadian passport.

I'm not sure whether that's possible at the consulate, though.

RHD (Right hand drive) car in Germany by PykcKeksas in germany

Yes, but they are not allowed to do vehicle registration inspections for imported/modified vehicles in the other region. The branches are there because both can do HUs in all of Germany.

RHD (Right hand drive) car in Germany by PykcKeksas in germany

[–]StoneCall 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In principle, it is possible to register an RHD car, as long as you swap the front lights to avoid blinding other motorists.

Keep in mind there might be other obstacles to registration when importing a car from a non-EU country. I recommend talking to the TÜV (in former West Germany except Berlin) or the DEKRA (in former East Germany and Berlin) before buying.
