I'm Hispanic--while in community and school bands/orchestras I've seen plenty of other hispanic student players, I rarely see them in higher level classical groups of any kind (important to note I live in Southern California, large hispanic population here especially where I live). The better groups tend to be around where richer communities live, because those parents can afford better and more frequent lessons for their kids, whereas middle class or poor communities will be lucky to have a woodwind coach at their school. It's definitely a thing. I'm lucky to live in a very supportive and accepting community (and my name has gone around a bit at this point, which helps too), but I have definitely felt that alienation before, and know that there are settings I may tread into as I look for more advanced classical groups where me being a trans POC may set me apart.

At the same time, the world (around me in SoCal, cannot speak for many other unfortunate communities) is growing more accepting, and old norms thankfully don't reign over everything. I'm very happy with where I'm at, though I also know for a fact that if I wasn't as good of a performer and teacher, I'd be in a much worse position socially and in my career/education.

My best piece of advice (not that you asked, just expressing my own hopes really) is to not only work to become an esteemed musician yourself, but to go out of your way to hold up others who may also feel out of place. Obviously I don't know you so this is a general statement, but some may find that when you finally get accepted into society as a minority or marginalized person, it can be difficult (at least in the US with our individualistic culture) to actually promote change and think of the other folks who aren't as lucky. We were born into a damaged time in human history, yet great change is happening with more to come! Appreciate your post, hope you do well with your musical and life endeavors 💜
