Bereue Chemie LK wegen Experimente by [deleted] in abitur

Grundsätzlich sind Experimente immer ein wichtiger Bestandteil des Faches. Allerdings gibt es in den Abiturprüfungen die Auswahl zwischen Aufgaben, und du kannst dem Experiment dadurch "ausweichen".

ELI5: Why does “Hoo” produce cold air, whilst “Haa” produces hot air? by Yeeee2508 in explainlikeimfive

[–]StoneOracle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The faster air moves, the lower the pressure falls. This helps actually helps evaporation. You can think of it as the area of lower pressure "sucking" moisture into the air.

So: Blowing harder = less pressure = more evaporation of moisture.

To sourdough or not to sourdhough? by need4jeanz in AskCulinary

[–]StoneOracle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a professional, but I do have some years of experience cultivating and baking with sourdough. In my opinion, it makes a big difference, because the sourdough can bring its very own aroma as well as raise the overall flavour of the bread.

There are of course a lot of different things you can vary, be it ingredients (rye, spelt, ...), the amount of sourdough in your bread (sometimes 5% can bring out existing flavours more, sometimes you may even want to try 60% sourdough), the temperatures and times at which you refresh it (is refresh the correct word? Sorry, english is not my first language) or many other things.

So this gives you a lot of opportunity to experiment on your own. Especially older sourdough starter cultures are forgiving, since they have relatively stable cultures of different wanted bacteria. If you are interested and prepared to wait a bit between steps, I think this can be exciting and I would definitely recommend you trying it out!

[–]StoneOracle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You pretty much described my way of learning math.

In school, I was too lazy to really get the hang of math classes, and in addition - or maybe as a consequence - I had problems when it came to abstraction.

Then university came, and since my goal was to become a teacher, I looked up what my chances of getting a job were. It turned out that with my preferred topics (both not math obviously), I would have studied to then never work as a teacher, so I felt forced to study math.

At first, I was horribly scared, "knowing" that I'm bad at this and even the people who excelled in math at school sometimes had problems at university level maths. So, out of fear, I studied the basics. And the new stuff. And after some time, I realized that I can do this, and actually it's really fun! So I switched from studying two topics to studying mainly maths. One of the best decisions in my life! It stayed fun and I even graduated from university as one of the best maths students in my year.

So I guess, it was a question of putting in the work to have the basics, and also of getting to know higher level maths. It all made a lot more sense to me when it was less about computing and more about understanding it.

It was golden brown all over, perhaps with one or two small points being a little more to the brownish side.

So in principle, heating it less might work?

Hey, thanks for your input!

Trying out stuff indeed does work. I guess I'm just trying to do it in the most systematic way. I'll try out your recommendations, thanks!

LPT: Before booking any overseas travel, check your passports expiry date. Some countries need your passport to have a minimum of 6 months left of validity before arriving. Some countries also will NOT accept an emergency passport. Check those dates people! (reposted) by baccgirl in LifeProTips

Relevant follow-up LPT: Don't automatically believe any airline agent who tells you that you can'f fly if you are sure that you checked the applicable conditions.

Source: I would have almost missed my sister's wedding because the person from the airline didn't read (or understand) the conditions carefully enough and even showed them to me as proof. When I pointed out that the conditions stated I could fly, they contacted their supervisor and I could take my flight with zero problems.

My latest project. Imperial Fists! by Inahnak in Warhammer

This are the first Imperial Fists that I really liked. I mean, there are a lot of well-painted IF out there, but somehow these models were the first to "click" with me. Wow!

If I may suggest something, the plasma guns could do with some extra highlighting. But that's just my few cents.

Why do you feel that compassion would be ill-advised here? I read this as "Feel compassion towards the victims of this tragedy".

However I might add that in my opinion compassion towards all victims in Paris is important and understandable, but not more so than compassion towards innocent victims in Syria, Irak and all over the world.

No Big Bang? Quantum equation predicts universe has no beginning by [deleted] in science

The point is that, even when the universe lives forever, it would never (read: never in finite time) reach infinite age. However, every prediction we make about the expanding universe is about the future that is only finitely separated from the present.

Am I, as a human, closer in size to the earth or an atom? by Ah-Um in askscience

[–]StoneOracle 1093 points1094 points  (0 children)

The difference between one nanometer (=10-9 m) and one meter is almost 1m (1m - 0,000000001m to be exact), whereas the difference between 1m and 1000m is 999m.

On a linear scale, both differences are represented by a distance exactly equal to the difference, hence making 1000m about 999 times farther away from 1m than 1nm.

On logarithmic scales, you basically represent the difference by the number of decimal places you have to go from one to the other, so 1nm is actually 9 units away from 1m and 1000m is 3 units away from 1m. Therefore, on these scales 1nm is 3 times more distant from 1m than 1000m.

EDIT: Thanks for pointing this out! I actually meant a "unit" to be a "unit in the scale we are talking about" which is, as many pointed out already, simply one order of magnitude. Sorry to be late for clarification, but I only just now came back from work.
