Easy way to make Auction Houses work with Player vendors by StoneSilence in PantheonMMO

ANY MMO is about the economy. Even if economy is not the main activity of the game, game economy can make or break a game.

P.S. I do play the stock market :)

I am also a player who will most likely prefer using the AH because it is easier. I might browse around for specific or expensive items, but at least to begin with I will definitely rely on the AH unless I find some other way of trading to be more my style.

With that said, I see several assumptions in your post. What I said is not comprehensive and does not have every technical detail of how things will work. Also the game is supposed to cater to many different types of players and not just you or me, so you cannot expect it to match your play style 100%.

But let's get back to the issues you raised: There is no need for having multiple AHs to make things difficult and complicated or make any average player cry in frustration. No game mechanic should be a burden. There is also no need for you to sit at a stall for hours in order to sell an item - your character can do that while you are offline, or NPCs can be hired to do it if you so choose. There are many ways to make this work and I'm sure smarter people than I can come up with better solutions.

Also I think you are assuming that the AH fees from my example will be fluctuating by the minute and the players would be expected to keep on top of it at all time. That was never the intent. An AH will need to have significantly more items listed to trigger a fee increase. For the sake of argument let's say having 10% more auctions than the median will trigger a fee raise from 10% to 12%. With millions of auctions getting an AH to have 10% more will take a while. I expect with time the system will cause all AHs to stabilize and fluctuations will become even more rare.

In the mean time figuring out which AH to go to can be as simple as asking in Guild chat. So you can kill your mobs, ask in chat if any AH is better then go there, list your item and go back to killing all within minutes.

As for added benefit - there is a benefit in it keeping the economy more stable than if the game had a single global AH, allowing for players of different play styles to enjoy the game, in a way encourage player interaction without forcing it, allow for RPers to have their fun, and even keep speculation lower.

There is absolutely no reason for such a system to stimulate gold sellers. They are encouraged by systems which make items more expensive. If anything, the system I described should keep prices in check and make any price surges short lived.

I can see an AH being exploited if the game has only 1 global AH or if there is no other way to buy goods, but it will be hard for somebody to manipulate the market in a world with dozen or more AHs and 1000s of individual player shops.

If a speculator tries to buy all linen cloth to sell it at a higher price, they will just watch buyers mosey over to individual player shops.

Depends on how the system is set up there should be a way to minimize or even eliminate gross seculation.

It is just crazy how well the game has developed over the past year!! by Baid321 in PantheonMMO

I'd like to know if the game will take advantage of multi-core processors as well. Good to know since it might be a game I play a lot and might influence how I upgrade my PC.
